MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Were celebrating our 10th

anniversary this month!

years

To commemorate this auspicious event, in your hands

is the very first Guide to Malaysian Doctors of Aesthetics.
A medical tourism initiative by Cosmetic Surgery & Beauty magazine, this guidebook will also be translated into Chinese for distribution
to Chinese markets.
As we at Cosmetic Surgery & Beauty magazine are frequently asked for
recommendations and advice on which doctors to go to for treatments, we
thought it was about time we introduced some of these doctors to our readers,
to give some background and more insight into what treatments are available
and who is doing what.
We thought this guidebook format would be nice and easy for readers to
carry about. Under the headings of Plastic Surgery, Dermatology, Cosmetic
Dentistry and Aesthetics, the doctors are placed in alphabetical order for easy
reference. The doctors are also presented in double page layouts with their
photos so you know what they look like! While most, if not all, doctors can
nowadays be found by doing a Google search anyway, a directory with their
contact details is conveniently placed at the back of this booklet.
Our aim is to provide more handy format guidebooks in the future for
distribution on our roadshows at exhibitions and events that we take part in
around the region along with the magazine.
We hope that you will find this little guidebook useful.
Do write to us with your thoughts.
And Happy Anniversary to us!

two decades of strong surgical
experience, Dr. Soma offers a variety
of cosmetic procedures at his clinic.
I like plastic surgery as it is an
amalgamation of art and surgery,
Dr. Soma says. Seeing a person
transformed makes it all worthwhile.

A special interest in treating burns,
scars and keloids led Dr. Soma to help
establish the Advanced Burns Centre
at the National University of Malaysia.

I personally get immense satisfaction from cleft lip

surgeries, he said. Nothing like seeing a mothers

Dr. Soma said.

the sport. He has built six large
badminton centres in the Klang Valley
in the hope of attracting more talent
to this sport.
After 20 years in this field, are
there any signs that he is getting tired
of this work? I still enjoy it tremendously.
It is very fulfilling for me to change
someones life especially if their skin
is bothering them. I like to address my
patients concerns and change their
outlook on life. If I am able to help
them to regain their confidence, it
translates into better career prospects
for them. The most satisfying thing
for me is the smile I get from my
patients that says Thank you. It
makes me feel good.

DR. ANNA HOO JEN SHI

The aesthetics physician who pioneered periorbital rejuvenation
with filler and a combination of treatments, has innovated to invent
Annas Celebrity lift and Annas Celebrity Glow.

uis Barragan, a Mexican architect and engineer once said, Any work of
architecture which does not express serenity is a mistake. I believe
the same principle that applies to the design of a building applies to
the design of a face; any treatment done on the face which fails to bring out
the serenity and harmony of an individual is a mistake, says aesthetics physician
Dr. Anna Hoo Jen Shi.
In order to bring out the harmony of ones face, an aesthetics physician
needs to be an artist, who at the same time, uncannily masters many aspects
of science, for example, the science behind each treatment, the response of an
individual patients body toward the treatment, and how to combine different
treatment modalities to achieve the best results.

A person with love and self-confidence is beautiful,

and my work and means of improving aesthetic
appearance is aimed at improving a person's selfconfidence. It's like wearing a power suit to a job
interview. When you feel good about yourself, you
will excel in whatever you do! Dr. Anna Hoo
As patients are all different in body and health when we start treatment,
one patients response to treatment will be different from anothers. Moreover,
every person has distinct facial features. These are the very features that
define each individual and help to differentiate one person from another, that
makes them unique. It is the task of the aesthetics doctor to enhance these
unique facial features while harmonising the rest of the face. Hence, aesthetics
treatment should be individualised and tailored to each and every patient instead
of being stereotypically administered, enthused Dr. Anna Hoo. The versatility
and marriage of both the art and science behind this never fails to intrigue and
excite me.
Dr. Anna Hoo was one of the first doctors in Asia to perform periorbital
(the area around the eye) rejuvenation using a combination of therapies. In
Malaysia, she also pioneered methods of correction of imperfections around
the eyes using hyaluronic acid filler. Her interest in combination therapies has
led her to innovate and invent with Annas Celebrity Lift and Annas Celebrity
Glow non-surgical face-lifting and facial rejuvenation therapies using injectables.
12

Aesthetics physician Dr.

Anna Hoo Jen Shi offers a
panoply of different treatments and uses them in
combination to obtain the
best results.

Indeed, her expertise in the use of injectables has led to her becoming a certified
Asian regional trainer in the botulinum toxin A brand of Botox, as well as the filler
brand Juvederm. Dr. Anna frequently presents talks, lectures and demonstrations
on injection techniques for the eye area in Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines
and China.
Of her work, Dr. Anna says: The greatest joy is derived from seeing that my
work helps to improve the lives of my patients.
Born in Alor Setar, Kedah, Dr. Anna obtained her degree in medicine at the
University of Science Malaysia in 2002. A Diploma in Aesthetic Medicine from the
American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine (USA) followed in 2006. That same
year she obtained a Certificate in Serdev Sutures in Aesthetic Surgery from the
New Bulgarian University, Bulgaria.
Her hunger for knowledge in this area of special interest led her to obtain
a Fellowship in Dermatologic Laser Surgery from Mahidol University, Bangkok,
Thailand in 2008. Then in 2009, she was Board Certified by the American
Academy of Aesthetic Medicine (USA).

find it immensely satisfying

when patients walk out with a
newfound confidence, and
upon their return, report with exuberance
the glowing compliments they received,
says aesthetic physician Dr. Jason Yip
Khin Loong. Many of our patients
have been living with their hyperpigmentation for years, often undergoing
numerous treatments at various
places but to no avail. When we finally
treat them successfully, and in some
cases fully eradicate it, the positive
impact on their lives is truly priceless.
This spurs me on to be better at what
I do, adds this doctor, whose main
focus areas cover hyper-pigmentation
and acne, with a special interest in
skin rejuvenation.
After the completion of compulsory
service in which he won many accolades,
he decided to branch into the field of
aesthetics. Dr. Jason, who has a keen
sense for beauty, as well as attention
to ones needs, made the decision to
further specialise in the field of aesthetic
medicine based on the positive impact
a successful aesthetic treatment or
procedure can have on an individual.
Having worked with the largest
aesthetic centre in Malaysia, he
subsequently clinched the resident

Patients know him as an amicable

With 33 years experience, this aesthetics physician says that
its no longer a job, its passion.

when you meet cosmetic
dermatologist Dr. Jeswender
Singh is his passion for his craft. Always
working hard to give the best to his
patients, Dr. Jeswender leaves no
stone unturned to ensure his patients
go home satisfied after treatment. To
deliver consistent results and achieve
new landmarks in aesthetic treatment
are the main goals of this centre,
says Dr. Jeswender.
Dr. Jeswender s Dermlaze Skin &
Laser Centre is strategically located in
the bustling township of Damansara
Utama. Dermlaze Skin & Laser Centre
is 10 minutes from Subang, and 15
minutes from the hustle and bustle of
Kuala Lumpur. The centre prides itself
with providing high quality medical
laser and aesthetic treatments which
show significant and consistent results.
The centre is fully equipped with the
latest, most sophisticated laser
technology to enhance your looks.
With more than 15 years in the
aesthetics industry, Dr. Jeswender was
one of the first few doctors to venture
out of a hospital and provide noninvasive aesthetics treatments in a
shop lot.
Having done his MBBS from
Mysore University, Dr. Jeswender then
continued to pursue his Diploma in
Dermatology from Cardiff University
and his Double Diploma in Aesthetics
from the American Academy of
Aesthetic Medicine. His hunger for

knowledge led him to study Cell

Dermlaze is a one stop centre for

fulfil the aesthetics needs of patients
from across the country and beyond.
Most of my patients come from
across the globe, from countries such
as Indonesia, Singapore and the US.
They all come with a common goal
to enhance their physical beauty, he
says.
A one-on-one consultation with
Dr. Jeswender is the first step for
a patient before a procedure is
performed in his centre. Dr. Jeswender
will sit down with the patient to learn
about what they want done and why
and what their fears are regarding it.
This is part of his treatment protocol.
In this time, I have a chat with the
patient in order to understand them
better and to find out thoroughly
what he or she expects from the
procedure they are signing up for, he
explains.
This is a mandatory step before
treatment as getting to know what
the patients expectations are before
and after the procedure is essential

Jeswender feels that if you are
considering any form of dermatological

are taking the first step towards

Dr. Jeswender has performed over

hen asked if he has won any

awards relevant to his work,
aesthetics and rejuvenation
physician, Dr. Kuljit Singh, flashes a
cheeky smile and says, I feel like I win
an award everyday when I see the smile
on my patients faces. Dr. Kuljit believes
that by letting the love for his work
shine through and giving his patients his
best from the moment they walk into
his clinic, he thrives.
Dr. Kuljit is the founder and owner of
two clinics: the first one is Damansara
Heights Wellness Clinique situated in
the vibrant township of Bukit
Damansara; and the other one is Shapes
Medispa which is located in bustling
Petaling Jaya. At Dr. Kuljits Clinique and
Medispa, the staff pride themselves on
being very patient-oriented. Much
emphasis is placed on attention to
patients needs and comfort. They are
treated with state-of-the art and
innovative equipment that is safe and
effective.
The unique part about the
treatments I give my patients is that I
combine both aesthetic and rejuvenative
medicine to achieve optimal results,
explains Dr. Kuljit, whose patient base
has grown to be quite diverse. My
patients come from far and wide,
namely, Europe, America, Indochina and
even from down south Australia, he
adds.
Dr. Kuljit graduated with his basic
medical degree from KMC Mangalore in
1997 and continued to do a year of

internship in India. He then returned to

Malaysia and served with the government
service in 1999. His love for aesthetics
grew when he started indulging in
aesthetic procedures while attached to
the Awana Kijal Clinic. He then started
his own practice in 2005. His interest in
aesthetic procedures and research
began with cosmeceuticals. He started
the KJS Pharma cosmeceuticals division
in 2006 along with Cosmeteq Skin
Ventures Sdn. Bhd. His interest in
aesthetics has led him to pursue a
Diploma in Aesthetic Medicine from
the American Academy of Aesthetic
Medicine (AAAM). He then went on to
start Damansara Heights Wellness
Clinique (DHWC ) in 2008.
Dr. Kuljits passion for aesthetics
has led him to travel to Korea, Thailand,
Singapore, India, Vietnam, the Philippines,
Indonesia and Dubai to train in various
procedures.
In 2013, Dr. Kuljit plans to introduce
the K-Lift, a minimally-invasive thread
lifting technique using resorbable
sutures. This technique can be applied
to multiple procedures for the face and
body. This is Dr. Kuljits area of sub22

specialisation a minimally-invasive
threadlifting technique which he has
devised and which he is still improving
upon.
The K-Lift technique can be used
on any part of the face and body to
correct early ptosis and flabbiness of
the tissue. The K-Lift is the most recent
method for remodelling and rejuvenating
the body and the face. It is a less
traumatic experience for the patient,
leaving few puncture marks or no scars.
There is rapid recovery, less swelling and
less ecchymosis. Patients can rapidly
resume normal activities, explains Dr.
Kuljit.
Over the years, Dr. Kuljit has been a
speaker on aesthetics at various events,
the most recent being the Malaysian
Society of Aesthetic Medicine (MSAM)
Conference which was held in June
2013. Dr. Kuljit is also a trainer for BTA
and filler with Parvus and a speaker for
Venusys Sdn Bhd on lasers, especially
their Q-switch laser.
Dr. Kuljit stands by the fact that we
live in a day and age where aesthetic
medicine has advanced in leaps and
bounds, but that is truly not enough as
we must also look after our nutrition
and our well-being. Therefore, combining
all this, he offers patients a customised
service which can enhance and rejuvenate
their looks as well as improve their
overall well-being resulting in more
confidence and happiness in the long
term.

Aesthetics physicians Dr. Lim Ting Song and Dr. Cheah Pei Lynn
making patients beautiful through a panoply of skills and methods.

r. Lim Ting Song is both the

medical director and aesthetics
physician at the Clique Clinic.
Specialising in aesthetic medicine with
a training in both internal medicine and

years honing his skills and, today, has
accomplished much more than just a

Japan at the Tohoku University School
of Medicine, Dr. Lim is fluent in Japanese,
English, Chinese and Malay. Along
with that, Dr. Lim has worked as a fullfledged physician and consultant in
Japan and the United States.
After leaving the Cleveland Clinic
Childrens Hospital in December 2009,
Dr. Lim returned to Malaysia to act as
a medical consultant at the Mahameru

mostly Japanese patients, Dr. Lim
specialised in adult care, child care,
adolescent health, immunisation and
developmental screenings.
After over four years of working

We use CoolSculpting to enhance
the six pack, we slim down the abdomen
to make the rectus muscles more visible.
As for the autologous haemopoietic
stem cells, we are one of the few clinics
in Malaysia that actually provides this
therapy, Dr. Lim explained.
With such medical expertise, its
not surprising that Dr. Lim is a trainer
for Beaumedic and Alpha Health. He
also provides medical training to future
physicians and staff from selected
aesthetics companies. With medical
training in various fields, such as internal
medicine and paediatrics, Dr. Lim puts
strong emphasis on evidence-based
medicine. All procedures are based on
proven experience and scientific studies
or medical journals. This will ensure
optimum safety and efficacy with
24

regards to the medical procedures

that he performs.
Dr. Lim thoroughly enjoys aesthetic
medicine because it allows patients to
return home feeling confident in their
own skin. Dr. Lim believes, The most
satisfying part of medical aesthetics is
seeing patients leave feeling better
about themselves. Their looks are
enhanced, their features more refined
and ultimately, their confidence
boosted. As most of the results are
instant, with some improving after a
few months, patient satisfaction and
approval are great personal morale
boosters. It gives us drive to constantly
try new techniques and challenge
ourselves to further excel.
Dr. Cheah Pei Lynn is Dr. Lims
colleague and also an aesthetics
physician at the Clique Clinic. Hailing
from the Pearl of the Orient, Dr. Cheah
grew up in the beautiful island of
Penang before furthering her medical
education here in Kuala Lumpur. Dr.

DR. MARYATI MAHARON

The aesthetics physician who sub-specialises in non-invasive, non-surgical
cosmetic enhancements. Shes a blogger on medical aesthetics too!

hen asked what she finds

most satisfying about her
work, aesthetics physician
Dr. Maryati Maharon says, I enjoy
meeting people and solving their
self-image issues. My work combines
science with art and it allows me to
be creative. I also have the opportunity
to meet the most interesting people
from all around the world.
Dr. Maryatis Faceworks Clinic is
situated at the upmarket Starhill
Gallery in Bukit Bintang in the heart
of Kuala Lumpur within close proximity
to some of the best hotels and shopping
malls KL has to offer. My expertise is
in handling tourists, mainly Caucasians
and people from the Middle East.
Situated in Bukit Bintang, 50 percent
of my clientele is made up of tourists.
She goes on to add: I have an
equal number of male and female
patients and I also get a lot of virgins
[people who have never had aesthetic
treatments done before].
Dr. Maryatis philosophy in medical
aesthetics is that the patient comes
first. The way I run my clinic allows
patients to express themselves as
much as they want. Every treatment is
tailored and personalised according
to the patients needs, expectations
and budget. I become a confidante to
my patients and after a while they all
become friends. I am also a perfectionist
and an artist, something which most
of my patients appreciate especially
when it comes to filler injections and

remodeling of the face.

The first consultation any patient
has with Dr. Maryati lasts for about an
hour. This is when she takes the time
to have a long chat with the patient to
learn about his or her expectations,
fears and hopes. This is an important
part of the way she works.
I only see patients by appointment
because I believe that you need to be
mentally prepared to see the doctor if
you are really serious about getting
something done. As with any elective
medical procedure, pre-planning and
consultation is important to avoid
complications or patient dissatisfaction,
says Dr. Maryati, who is also a blogger
who writes about medical aesthetic
procedures, products, trends and
happenings at http://faceworksclinic.com/home/blog.
Dr. Maryati graduated from the
University of Malaya in 2004 and
served the government for several
years before focusing fully on aesthetics.
During the time she worked with the
government, she was exposed to
dermatology as well as orthopaedic
uses for botulinum toxin A (BTA). But
since 2008, Dr. Maryatis interest in
aesthetics has led her to pursue a

With a keen interest in skin and
holistic health she has attended multiple
courses on aesthetics and dermatology,
and has hands-on experience and
training in lasers, chemical peels, BTA

Dr. Maryati is also a speaker on
aesthetics, I do events with brands

to corporates and other forms of public
awareness. Occasionally, we throw
events for the clinic for target groups.
A recent event was for the mothers

where I spoke on the changing trends
of medical aesthetics and why it is
important to see a trained doctor.
Dr. Maryati also does private training
for other doctors on how to use fillers
such as Aquamid and Restylane, as

DR. N. SUTINA
The aesthetics physician who has trained and trained in a multitude
of procedures to make a difference in the lives of her patients.

medicine, aesthetics physician
Dr. N. Sutina Nordin recounted, I
started doing chemical peels in 1996,
then botulinum toxin injections in
1999, fillers in 2001 and since then
lasers and light devices and everything
else related to aesthetic medicine!
Dr. Sutinas specialty is non-surgical,
minimally-invasive aesthetic procedures
like injectables and laserlipolisis which
give patients results as if surgery was
done.
She was one of the first doctors to
be trained in laserlipolisis with the
first-ever laser for fat, the SmartLipo.
I was trained in Italy in 2005 and
started practising this technique and
have been doing it ever since. Laserlipolisis has been my focus for many
years and I was elected as a trainer by
Deka Italy, the supplier for SmartLipo.
I started by treating small areas but
have progressed to treat faces and
larger areas.
Dr. Sutina studied at the University
of Malaya medical school and graduated
in 1991. She then worked as a house
officer and medical officer in the
Gynaecology, Medicine, Paediatrics
and Surgery Departments. She
worked for four years in the Surgery
department before leaving government
practice to join a private general
practice in KL. Two years later, she
joined Mont Kiara Medical Centre
(now Twin Towers Medical Centre)

where she was the Primary Care

Physician for two years.
I started the Womens Wellness
Centre with the in-house obgyn. My
interest in aesthetic medicine started
then. We set up the Beauty Clinic
where I offered services like chemical
peels and Endermologie, she explained.
As the demand for these treatments
grew, Dr. Sutina decided to set up
Aesthetic Medical Services in Phileo
Damansara 1 within a plastic surgery
and dental centre. When the plastic
surgeon closed shop, she started the
En-Hanze Medical Aesthetic Centre,
where she operates to this day.
Over the past 10 years I have

courses, to develop my skills. I went to

France to learn mesotherapy under

treatments.

DR. WILLIAM HOO KHEE LIAM

An aesthetics physician with a special interest in treating acne scars,
pigmentation and overall beautification.

fter graduating as a doctor

from Universiti Sains Malaysia
in 2006, Dr. William Hoo Khee
Liam started his professional career in
Alor Setar. There, he spent years honing
his skills in various specialist and surgical
departments. Dr. Williams interest in
aesthetic medicine led him to further
his studies with a Diploma in Aesthetic
Medicine with the American Academy
of Aesthetic Medicine 2011 and a Post
Graduate Certificate in Primary Care
Dermatology 2012. He is also a Member
of the American Academy of Aesthetic
Medicine and the Malaysian Society of
Aesthetic Medicine (MSAM).
Dr. Williams move into aesthetic
medicine was unplanned. During his
years serving at various health clinics
throughout Malaysia, he noticed that
many people men and women alike
were troubled by skin problems
such as pigment disorders, hair loss
and premature aging.
It may sound bizarre, as many
people have low esteem and lose
confidence in themselves yet they do
not seek treatment for these treatable
problems, Dr. William stated.
This lack of knowledge affects
not only their careers but also their
daily lives and personal relationships. I
am surprised that in this era of the
internet and globalisation, many people
are not aware of how to help themselves,
while others shy away from seeking
treatment. Dr. William added: Often,
they do not know what treatment

modalities are available in the market,

or what the side effects and potential
complications of these treatments
might be.
Because of this, nowadays, Dr.
William said that patient education is
the most important aspect of my
daily practice. With this in mind he
has begun to do public presentations
on aesthetics and was a speaker at
a Health Fair organised by a local
newspaper recently.
Dr. William now works with his sister,
also an aesthetics physician, at the
Anna Hoo Clinic in Kuala Lumpur. This
move has paved the way for him to
pursue his interest in the various nonsurgical forms of aesthetic treatments
even further. The range of treatments
that he provides currently includes
laser treatments, light and radiofrequency
treatments, filler, botulinum toxin and
chemical peels.
Laser treatments, particularly CO2
lasers for treating acne scars and Q-switch
Nd:Yag lasers to reduce pigmentation,
are Dr. Williams special interest.
No matter how rigorous ones
skin care routine is, occasionally
marks are still left on the skin. For the
unlucky ones, the scars can be so
extensive that they hide their beautiful
facial features!
Scars come in many forms. Some
are hypertrophic, some are in the
shape of a box or ice pick. Which
treatment is chosen will largely depend
on the severity and the nature of the

scar. Experienced practitioners will
individualise the treatment regime
based on a persons specific skin
condition and skin colour to avoid
unwanted side effects such as postinflammatory hyperpigmentation.
The CO2 laser has been used for
skin resurfacing for many years. With
proven results, improved comfort,
increased safety (lower risk of scarring
and infection) and decreased downtime,
the fractional CO2 has increasingly
replaced conventional CO2 laser
resurfacing. Apart from scar reduction,
CO2 lasers can be used for moles,
warts and corn removal. In different
energy settings, it can be used for
rejuvenation of the face to improve
skin laxity and reduce fine wrinkles.
Dr. Williams range of treatments
also includes IntraCEL the microneedling
radio frequency treatment for tightening,
lifting and scar reduction.
When carrying out treatments,
Dr. Williams approach is that natural
enhancement of aesthetic appearance
is the key. Everyone should notice the
difference, but no one should know
that anything has been done.

Aesthetics physician Dr. William Hoo Khee

Liam believes that aesthetics is about making
a noticeable difference but without letting
people know that anything has been done.
