Chief Guest
PRINCIPALS SPEECH
My Lord Hon. Chief Justice, Hon. Attorney General, Lordships, Hon.
Judges, President of the Bar Association, Presidents Counsel,
Members of the Council of Legal Education and the Board of Studies,
donors, Members of the Staff, Distinguished guests, invitees and my
dear children.
It is a great honour and privilege to welcome Your Lordship the Chief
Justice and Chairman of the Council of Legal Education as the Chief
Guest at this function today, which is the first Awards Ceremony after
Your Lordship assumed duties as the Chief Justice. We warmly
welcome Your Lordship, to this much-awaited function. We are indeed
honoured by Your Lordships presence, and grateful for accepting our
invitation and gracing this occasion.
My Lord, you have always followed the progress of the College with
keen interest and have been always supportive of the College activities.
Your dedication and commitment to the legal profession and
education, your wealth of knowledge and experience make you a role
model worthy of emulation by the younger generation. Please accept
my Lord, our sincere thanks for your great leadership, far-sighted
vision and paternal guidance in all our activities. We welcome you
most warmly and thank you sincerely for accepting our invitation to be
our Chief Guest.
While improving the physical facilities in the College the Council of
Legal Education is now focusing on improving the academic standards
of the College. The wide variety of careers that law students are coming
to pursue, and the way that lawyers move to and from the profession,
should make us focus on the kind of education we are offering them.
We need to equip our students for the variety of careers open to them.
This will make them better lawyers because they understand the
context of their clients problems and the way clients see those
problems. It also equips them for the variety of careers that are opening
up for them outside the legal profession.
Sri Lanka Law College is a well-resourced law school that can
contribute to this process. For instance, the present Principal is a
product of Sri Lanka Law College. He has had his higher education not
only in Law but also in pedagogical subjects such as methods of
education and evaluation. He has had experience in the United
Kingdom, Australia and Singapore. The other members of the staff are
also very competent and highly qualified legal practitioners. Despite the
human resources available, Sri Lanka Law College lacks certain
infrastructure and physical facilities to further expand its services. For
instance although the College has extra curricular activities such as
