Rebecca Rodríguez cuts her own hair. It’s
not that she’s sure she’d do a better job than
a professional stylist, but if someone is going
to be guilty of making her look stupid, she’d
prefer to be the culprit.
“I would much rather trust myself with my
success or my failure,” the independent film
director says.

she’d trust to come near her long brown hair
with a pair of scissors: her business partner,
film producer Steve Herring.
A shared independent streak paired with an
unwavering trust in each other has helped the
two —who have created a number of short
films and one full-length feature under their
independent banner, Drink Me Pictures — to
stay afloat in the perilous currents of the film
industry.
But when Rodríguez and Herring set out to
fund a second feature, they learned a lot
about film distribution — and realized it was
an ugly business, especially for independent
filmmakers.
“There’s no reasonable, fair way to get a film
distributed independently,” Herring says.
Rodríguez explains that movie studios pay a
lot of money upfront to get movies made, and
therefore own everything that is generated
once they’re distributed. On the other hand,
independent filmmakers pay everything they
have at the beginning of the creative process
— often without taking anything for them-
selves — and hope to turn a profit later.
“That’s right where independent production
and studio distribution intersect,” Rodríguez
says. “The studio system is set up to own the
back end, and the independent filmmakers
are banking on the back end, and it never
comes back. We couldn’t accept that that
was all that was available to us. It just seemed
ridiculous.”
Seeking to maintain creative control, find an
audience, and make a little money back, Rodrí-
guez and Herring decided to abandon the “sur-

vival of the richest” Hollywood ethic and — like
Rodríguez and her hair — trust themselves with
their success or their failure.
Their business model, “Futures to Features,”
seems such a logical approach to filmmaking
in our Internet-dominated society, it is hard to
believe no one has tried it before. (And Rodrí-
guez and Herring have checked. No one else
is doing it, and they’ve applied for a patent.)
With “Future to Features,” this director-pro-
ducer pair is seeking to fund their current
project — a feature called “Toast” — by solicit-
ing memberships from everyday people. For
$10 (plus shipping and handling), members
get to experience the movie-making process
at www.drinkmepictures.com (which Rodrí-
guez and Herring are planning to translate
into Spanish), and will receive a copy of the
“Toast” DVD once it’s completed.
“We just decided that why don’t we pre-sell
the movie experience through watching the
movie being made,” Rodríguez says, “and
then give the movie away as part of that
dynamic, in exchange for like half the money
that a person would normally pay for a fin-
ished DVD.”
Rodríguez says she and Herring have worked
hard to educate themselves on the business
side of filmmaking. They recognize that there
is more to their art form than just the creative
magic of writing, shooting, and editing a film.
They actually want people to see their work
— and they’d like to possibly not have to sacri-
fice themselves at the altar of starving art-
ists.
“Everybody on the independent side is just
trying to make their movie and then figure
out what to do from there,” Herring says.
“And that is not sustainable, certainly not if
you want to make more than one or two
movies.”
One of the reasons Rodríguez and Herring
applied for a patent for “Futures to Features”
was so that they could help other indepen-
dent filmmakers who were frustrated or
thwarted by the traditional film financing
model. They also want to make sure anyone
else who uses it shares their dedication to
legality and fairness.
“We knew we would do it right,” Rodríguez
says. “We knew that we would dot all of the i’s
and cross the t’s.”
“And we’re not just taking people’s money
and are gonna run away at the end of the
day,” Herring says.
In addition to providing funding for their
projects, the “Futures to Features” model,
which they’ve dubbed the “evolution of inde-
pendent filmmaking,” also helps Rodríguez
and Herring to lock in what is often most elu-
sive for independent films: an audience.
Before they can start preproduction, they’ll
need 60,000 memberships — which also
means 60,000 potential viewers for their
film.
The pair’s conservative estimate is that it
will take about six months to reach that
60,000 mark.
“The reality is that the amount of time that it
takes doesn’t really matter, because we’d be
spending this time raising the money,” Rodrí-
guez says. “Instead of asking 60,000 people
for $10, we’d be looking for a handful of five
to 10 people to give us thousands and thou-
sands of dollars.”
“And we still wouldn’t have an audience at
the end of that,” Herring adds.
In the meantime, they are sharing their “pre-
preproduction” work with members online,
which includes everything from Rodríguez
“being a dork” while buying glitter for press
kits to the business partners figuring out if it
is logistically possible for them to use an
“immersive camera,” which captures 360º of
action, for some of their shots. The behind-
the-scenes footage is being shot and edited
by Pedro Peraza, an Emmy-winner for his edit-
ing work at CNN.
When the 60,000th membership comes in,
“Toast” will go into four weeks of preproduc-
tion before jumping into a 19-day shooting
schedule — six days a week for three weeks,
“with a straggler day in the end,” Herring says
— in Portland and Vancouver, Wash.
For Herring, his favorite point on the “Toast”
timeline is now. The site, www.drinkmepic-
tures.com, has been up and taking member-
ships since the beginning of March, and he
loves being able to tell people about it and
encourage them to check it out.
Rodríguez is most looking forward to seeing
that 60,000th member — for whom Herring
says there will be a “hell of a prize” — signed
up.
“That’s going to be the day that I’m going to
be jumping up and down like a crazy person,
and hopefully Pedro won’t be nearby getting
me on camera,” she says, turning to Herring
with a smile. “But you know he will.”

y hacer algo de dinero, Rodríguez y Herring decidieron abandonar
la ética de Hollywood “la supervivencia de los ricos” y — como
Rodríguez y su cabello — confiarse su éxito o su fracaso.
Su modelo de negocios, “Futures to Features”, parece una aprox-
imación más lógica de realizar películas en nuestra sociedad
dominada por la Internet, y es difícil de creer que nadie lo había
intentado antes. (Y Rodríguez y Herring lo han revisado. Nadie lo
está haciendo y ellos aplicaron para una patente.)
Con “Futures to Features”, este par de directora y productor está
buscando financiar su actual proyecto — una película llamada
“Toast” — a través de solicitar membresía de personas comunes y
corrientes. Por $10 dólares (más envió y manejo), los miembros
llegan a tener la experiencia de participar en el proceso de elabo-
ración de películas en el sitio de red www.drinkmepictures.com (el
cual Rodríguez y Herring están planeando traducir al español), y

“Nosotros simplemente tomamos la decisión de porqué no
vendíamos con anticipación la experiencia de la película a través
de ver la elaboración de la misma”, dice Rodríguez, “y después dar
la película como parte de la dinámica, a cambio de algo como la
mitad del dinero que una persona normalmente paga por un DVD
terminado”.
Rodríguez dice que ella y Herring están trabajando duramente en
educarse ellos mismos en la parte del negocio de la realización de
películas. Ellos reconocen que es más en su forma del arte, que
solo la magia creativa de escribir, filmar y editar una películas.

La ampliación aúna arquitectónicamente la

del museo original.

cámaras de almacenamiento”, dijo Finaldi.

The new exhibition space is con-
nected by underground passage-

Moneo’s design initially caused
controversy because it incorpo-
rated the cloister of the 15th-cen-
tury Jeronimo church, which was
removed stone by stone and reas-
sembled inside the extension.
The work sparked several lawsuits
by a group of Madrid residents com-
plaining that the project would dis-
rupt the architectural harmony of
the neighborhood and the cloister
would be ruined. The suits were dis-
missed by Madrid courts.
Madrid’s Thyssen-Bornemisza
and Reina Sofia museums also
have recently completed exten-
sions. The three museums are
within 10 minutes walk of each
other, along the central Paseo del
Prado boulevard.
Other works by Moneo, winner of
the 1997 Pritzker Architecture Prize,
include Madrid’s Atocha commuter
train station and the Cathedral of Our
Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles.
