than we can ask or imagine.

St. Francis Church is being given more than many
of us could have imagined. Bishop Smith and the Diocesan Council have agreed to fund the difference between
what we raise through our capital campaign, Faith under
Construction, and what it costs to construct our church
building at 602 Brewster.
We asked for and received -- funding for the
building to include a childrens wing where we will house
a daycare/preschool. The 30 of us who were present for
the Feb 20 Diocesan Council meeting were overwhelmed
by this show of support. God is at work through the mission and ministries of St. Francis Church. The Diocese
has affirmed that.
How are we to respond? Through generosity in
giving to Faith under Construction. Through continuing in Gods work tutoring, feeding the hungry, praying,
caring for one another, participating in Eurekas civic
events, going door-to-door inviting neighbors to come
worship and see what God is doing through St. Francis
Church. We will keep our focus on being Jesus in the
world.

Our speaker will be Scott Gunn, executive director of Forward Movement, a ministry of The Episcopal Church focused on inspiring disciples and empowering
evangelists. Scott has served as a parish priest and, prior to that, as a technology
leader in non-profit and commercial organizations. He is known in the wider
church for the Acts 8 Movement and as a blogger at www.sevenwholedays.org.

I had a vision of a house. Every time a crack appeared in the wall, or damage in the house, I dashed out to repair it as quickly as I possibly couldAnd the
Lord said to me, This is what your Christian life is like. Whenever any cracks
appear in the wall that has been built up around about you over the years by the
world and by yourself you dash out and you fill in the cracks so that no one is able
to see what is inside. But I want the world to be able to see what is inside. I want to
be able to come in through the cracks into your life and Im not going to fill them up
either, I am going to flow in and out of these cracks. So when you see the cracks
appear in your life, do not rush out and fill them in. Let Me come in. - David

Just like this house, we all have cracks in our lives. These cracks speak to our lifes
journey and experiences. Like a biography, these cracks recount the stories of our
livesstories that tell others who we are and why. This short little reflection seems
so relevant to my Lenten journey. I had to ponder why I, like the author, feel so
compelled to cover up or repair those characteristic cracks? Is it out of shame or
embarrassment? Is it in response to fear of being accepted the way that I am?
The image of God being able to move in and out of my life through these
cracks has helped me to accept and sometimes celebrate the cracks that I carry. I
had to smile as I imagined that with the many cracks (and flaws) that I have, the
more access points God has to flow in and out of my being. And with that in mind,
why would I try to conceal them?
Come in. Come into my life, Lord Jesus, and abide with me here.

Diocesan Council MeetingFebruary 20, 2016

On Sat., February 20 Bishop Smith and the Diocesan Council voted to fund
the construction of St. Francis church building at 602 Brewster Rd. The Diocese is
funding the difference between what we raise through our capital campaign, Faith
under Construction and what the building costs. Bishop Smith asked the St. Francis parishioners present to vow to give sacrificially to our capital campaign, Faith
under Construction. All 30 of us responded, We will, with Gods help.
The Bishop and Council approved a building of almost 10,000 square feet that
includes a childrens wing. Kathy Regnier, Sue Schmidt, and Linda Doolittle are
currently talking to preschool directors, gathering data on designing and operating a
daycare/preschool.

Clergy Retreat
Pastor Sally and Deacon Rebecca will be attending the spring clergy retreat
convened by Bishop Smith Tuesday, March 1, 2016 through Thursday, March 3,
2016. This semi-annual retreat will be held at Toddhall Retreat Center in Illinois. However, they both will be accessible by cell phone for pastoral emergencies
during the retreat.

Earthy Soul by Kathleen McDonald

My sheep hear my voice. I know them and
they follow me. John 10:27, NRSV
This picture fills me with remembered and
imagined sensory input. I can smell the freshness of the new grass and flowering grasses; I
can also smell the earthiness of both the sheep
and the shepherd. I can feel the warmth of the
sun and the warmth of the relationship between the shepherd and his sheep.
All creatures take in information through their senses. Our senses and our responses to sensory input can save our lives and help us meet our most basic needs
for safety, food, and shelter. Some of us have sharper senses of one kind than another. Horses sense when an earthquake is coming; birds sense the sun and know
which way is south in the fall and north in the spring.
Humans have the gift of imagination, a gift that allows us to take in sensory data
and use that data to help us understand what we cannot sense physically.
Looking at this picture, I project myself into one of the sheep (or goats, I dont
really know.) I project Jesus, of course, into the shepherd. I feel his love and care
for me and for all of us. I jump joyfully toward his outstretched hand to receive his
gifts. Its easy for me to see God, feel God, hear God in the beauties of rural nature.
Its easy for me to remember that the beautiful things I experience are Gods gifts to
us all.
Today I am reminded that in our daily lives there are less joyful sounds than a
goats bleating, scarier events that can still lead us to a gratitude for Gods gifts. As
I write this I am at the Eureka library, looking out the window at Highway 44. A
few moments ago I looked up to see a huge cloud of smoke rising from a car. Three
people opened the hood and smoke billowed out, followed seconds later by a shooting ball of flam. Seconds later I see a tractor-trailer stop and approach the burning
car. The driver must have a fire extinguisher, because by the time I hear the fire sirens and see the trucks arrive, there are no more flames visible. The trucker and the
firefighters stay as long as they are needed. The fire is out, the people (as far as I
can tell) are not injured and the car can be towed away well before it becomes a rush
-hour hazard.
The sound of the siren is the sound of God to me today. It can be alarming if
Im not expecting to hear it, but when I need help, that sound is the sound of hope

COMMENTARY:
Please note the excess reported in pledge income for January reflects a generous
2016 pledge paid in full. However, taking this amount out of consideration shows
that we are still slightly ahead for where we budgeted to be for pledge income during January. Also, please note the significant amounts reported under special contributions and insurance proceeds in the Other Income section that reflects funds donated or compensated from the flood and vandalism damage. The overage in the
clergy compensation area is simply related to our quarterly pension payment.
OTHER MATTERS FOR THE COMMITTEE:
Recognizing the concerns expressed by several members of the congregation, I do
plan to review our financial status mid-year to look for an opportunity to increase
Pastor Sallys annual compensation.

Flyer blitz for Holy Week and Easter services

March 19
Flyer blitzes have proven to be an effective means for inviting worshipers to the
doors of St. Francis. Our Marketing and Communication Committee chair, Annette
Carr, has designed an attractive flyer that summarizes all of our Holy Week and
Easter worship services. We distribute these flyers by simply hanging or attaching the flyers on doorknobs of area residents homes.
There will be a flyer blitz one week before Easter on Saturday, March 19,
2016. We will be distributing several hundred flyers, and your help would be greatly
appreciated! We will gather at the Parish House at 9:30 a.m., then head out in
groups to nearby neighborhoods. With sufficient helpers, we can anticipate completing our task by 11:30 a.m. Then the rest of the day is for you to enjoy!!
Come and join us! Its a fun and easy way to help spread the word about the
many worship offerings that help all of us journey through this most sacred time of
our church year.

January 24, 2016
Members Present: Sylvia Ahmad, Donna Bernert, Michael Booker, Kevin Broom,

This meeting began immediately after the Annual Parish Meeting and was convened to cover two items of business.
The Bishops Committee approved two appointments to the committee:
Bob Champlin as Junior Warden and Kathleen McDonald as Clerk.
Distribution of the Vicars Housing Allowance as proposed:
Whereas, Section 107 of the Internal Revenue Code permits a minister of the
gospel to exclude from gross income (in computing federal income taxes) a church
-designated housing allowance paid to him/her as part of his/her compensation to
the extent used by him/her for actual expenses in owning or renting a home; and
Whereas, the Reverend Sally Weaver is compensated by St. Francis Episcopal
Church exclusively for services as a minister of the gospel; and
Whereas, St. Francis Episcopal Church does not provide the Rev. Weaver
with a rectory; therefore it is hereby
Resolved, that the annual compensation (consisting of a cash stipend and
housing allowance) paid to the Rev. Weaver for calendar year 2016 shall be
$43,211 of which $10,000 is hereby designated to be a housing allowance pursuant
to Section 107 of the Internal Revenue Code.

Capital Campaign Spiritual Emphasis

The Spiritual Emphasis of our capital campaign, Faith Under Construction, is under
way! A congregational letter will be arriving at your homes in a matter of
days. This is an exciting time in the history at St. Francis. However, sometimes
with that excitement there can also be feelings of uncertainty and anxietyall of
which are natural for the process that we are now involved in! There may also be
times when tension and obstacles begin to weigh down on us. What do we do
then? We turn to God. God has been with us up to this very point and we need to
continue to tap into Gods calming and guiding spirit as we move forward. That is
why we are asking you to intentionally pray for the parish during the months
ahead. We pray as a community and as individuals, directing our focus on the construction of our church building. A shared dream is in the process of becoming a reality! Lets keep God in the center of it!!

Loving and gracious God, we praise you for the blessings that we have received in
our personal lives and as members of St. Francis Church. Lord God, we have remained faithful to your call to ministry and by your grace, we now have the property

have set before us. We ask your continued presence to be ever with us as we embark
on our capital campaign, Faith Under Construction. Be our guide and light as we
discern how we can best support and participate in this campaign. To make our
dream of our own building a reality, we place our trust in you to be our steadfast

Wednesday, March 30th
St. Francis Crafternooners have
planned a weekday adventure for all
at St. Francis and any of their
friends who might want to join
along. Well meet at the Parish
House at 10 a.m. and carpool/
caravan to Forest Park. We plan to
stroll the galleries until our eyes and
souls are sated. We can proceed to
lunch there at the Museum or we
can go to the Boat House or the History Museum all in Forest Park. Check the museums website (slam.org) to get a
preview of what you might want to see. Exhibits of beautiful oriental rugs, of exotic
textiles, and of print and photography collections are currently planned.
No reservations are needed, but let Sue Schmidt or Donna Bernert know if youre
thinking of going. All are welcome.

The Standing Committee of the Diocese of Missouri
Second in a series of descriptions of ministries of St. Francis which
take place within the diocese.
The people of St. Francis have had an up-close look recently at the Diocesan Council when we attended their February meeting to ask their financial support for our
new church home. Pastor Sally, Deacon Rebecca and Barbi Click all serve currently
on the Diocesan Council. (See the February Chalice, p. 14 for more information
about Diocesan Council.)
The Standing Committee, made up of six lay and six clerical representatives, is a
separate committee. Their main tasks to serve as a council of advice to the Bishop.
Their advice is important in many
regards. They will be asked to approve the building plans at 602
Brewster. In a separate area, they approve all planned ordinations. Once
that has happened, a person moves
from a postulant category to a candidate category until that person is ordained.
The standing committee also act as
ecclesiastical authority whenever the
office of bishop is vacant or if the bishop is incapacitated. Members of this committee, lay and clerical, are elected in staggered terms of four years by the Diocesan
Convention. The Committee elects a president from among its members.
Currently, there are no members from St. Francis on the Standing Committee, although Pastor Sally recently finished her four-year term on it.

We pray for the witness, renewal, and growth of our parish family. Living
God, infuse us with your love. Enable us to proclaim the good news of Jesus
Christ to all whom we meet through our actions, our thoughts, our
words. Make St. Francis' Church a place of invitation and welcome, a safe
harbor and a beacon of the light of Christ. Amen.

Recipe of the Month

Pecan Pie Bread Pudding
Ingredients:
1 (16 oz) loaf day old French bread
2 and cup milk
1 cup half & half
4 eggs, lightly beaten
1 cup granulated sugar
1 Tablespoon vanilla
teaspoon salt
cup butter, softened
1 and cup packed brown sugar
1 cup pecan, chopped
Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F./
Cube bread the place in a large bowl.
In another bowl, beat eggs, milk, half & half, sugar, salt, and vanilla to eggs; whisk.
Pour over bread. Allow to sit 5 to 10 minutes
In another small bowl, combine with a fork, softened butter, brown sugar, and pecans.
Mixture will have the consistency of wet sand.
Pour half of the bread mixture into a 8x8 inch pan. Top with half the pecan mixture.
Spoon remaining bread mixture over and top with remaining pecan mixture. Press
down into pan slightly. Pan will be really full.
Top with remaining pecan mixture. Place pan on a cookie sheet with a edge to catch
mixture that may boil over. Bake at 350 degrees F 45 to 55 minutes. Center will
be slightly wiggly, but will set when cool.

approaching. Normally when Im out driving, I would not want to be approached by
a stranger truck driver. But if I need help with an engine fire on the highway, I hope
I would see God in that truck driver coming to help me with his extinguisher. The
actions of the truck driver and the fire fighters are signs of care, signs of love. Their
interaction with the car and its passengers is short-term, unlike Gods constant love
for us. But its loving care none the less.
Thank you, gracious and loving God, for the sound of your voice, for the love
in your eyes, for the smells and tastes of your gifts and for the loving touch
you send us every moment of every day. Help us to use our gifts to remember you, who created us all out of love. Amen.

If the flyer above looks familiar, it means youve visited our parish website recently! All are invited to join in for the last three meetings or for as many as you
can fit in. Books study groups at St. Francis, including this one, have been interesting and companionable gathering points for our mutual spiritual journeys. Give
it a try!
The next meetings are on the remaining Thursdays in Lent: Thursday, March 3rd,
Thursday March 10th, the final Thursday before Palm Sunday, March 17th.

Additionally, the committee members each signed the required annual diocesan
form stating that we had been given appropriate materials for child safety.
Next meeting will be the annual Bishops Committee Retreat, Friday evening
February 26th and Saturday, February 27th.
