Program Notes
Brian Campbell, trombone, teaches music theory and composition at CSB/SJU, in
addition, to serving as the Music Department chair. He has published or presented research
papers on topics ranging from the music of Arnold Schoenberg to eighteenth-century musical aesthetics. Campbell is currently a member of Amadeus Chamber Orchestra in
addition to Pastiche. Past experience as a professional trombonist includes performing with
Minnesota Brassworks, the Minneapolis Pops Orchestra, and the Colorado Springs
Symphony and Symphony Brass Quintet. He is a graduate of Oberlin College Conservatory
of Music and holds graduate degrees from the University of Minnesota.
Minneapolis-based pianist George Maurer is best known for his work as a performer,
arranger, music director and composer. He has performed with Eric Clapton, shared the
stage with Bruno Mars, and his symphonic arrangements have been performed by the
Minnesota Orchestra to the Boston Pops, under Keith Lockhart. George is the symphonic
music-director and arranger for the Grammy and Tony-awarded original cast of
Broadways Jersey Boys in The Midtown Men. Originally from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin
he is a graduate of Saint Johns University in Collegeville, Minnesota, with a BA in
Music-Composition.
Jim Payne wrote Too Cold to Snow and If I Forget Your Face with composer
George Maurer as part of their larger song cycle, Stations of the Heart, which has been
presented, in various versions, by Theater Latte Da, as part of its Latte Dark cabaret series,
and by Chanhassen Dinner Theaters, as part of its cabaret series. An alumnus of Nautilus
Music Theaters Composer/Librettist Studio, Jim has also written, with composer Robert
Elhai, three one-act operas Answered Prayers, Untold Lies, and Twisted Apples
based on the novel WINESBURG, OHIO, each of which has been presented at the
Minnesota Fringe Festival by Nautilus. With composer Leslie Ball, Jim wrote the one-act
opera Looking Glass Lake, which was presented as part of Nautilus Ivey Award-winning
Sister Stories.
Wynn-Anne Rossi is a nationally acclaimed composer whose works have reached
audiences throughout the United States, Europe, Iceland and Australia. Commissions
include works sponsored by Minnesota Public Radio, the National Endowment for the
Arts, the American Composers Forum and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. She has over
100 publications, primarily for piano, which are widely distributed online and in music
stores. Her repertoire also includes works for vocal and chamber groups, concert band and
orchestra. She has been teaching composition residencies in Minnesota schools since 2003,
inspiring hundreds of students to write their own music. Partnerships have included: the St.
Paul Chamber Orchestra, the American Composers Forum, and the Cowles Center for
Dance and Performing Arts. Rossi has also written two comprehensive series which
encourage young pianists to compose. Active as a presenter, Wynn-Anne is known for her

Libby Larsen is one of Americas most performed living composers. She has created a
catalogue of over 500 works spanning virtually every genre from intimate vocal and
chamber music to massive orchestral works and over twelve operas. Grammy Award
winning and widely recorded, including over fifty CDs of her work, she is constantly
sought after for commissions and premieres by major artists, ensembles, and orchestras
around the world, and has established a permanent place for her works in the concert
repertory. As a vigorous, articulate advocate for the music and musicians of our time, in
1973 Larsen co-founded the Minnesota Composers Forum, now the American
Composers Forum. A former holder of the Papamarkou Chair at John W. Kluge Center
of the Library of Congress, Larsen has also held residencies with the Minnesota Orchestra,
the Charlotte Symphony, and the Colorado Symphony. Her career has been recognized
with several awards including MITs McDermott award, the Peabody Award, and the
American Academys Arts and Letters Award.
Performer Bios
James DeVoll joined the faculty of Gustavus in the fall of 2011, where he teaches flute
and directs the flute choir. Based in the Twin Cities, he has performed on recitals and concerts throughout the United States and Europe. Recent projects have included concerts in
Germany at the Hochschule of Detmold, a collaboration with composer Steve Reich and
conductor Ransom Wilson at Yale, and a recital and Master Class at the University of
Arkansas. He has performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and has worked with
several composers on the premiering of dozens of works with groups such as the
American Composers Forum and the Contemporary Music Workshop. As a teacher, he is
on the faculty of the MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis, National Flute
Conventions in New York City and in Kansas City, where he was a winner of the 2008
Convention Performers Competition.Originally from Dallas, TX, James studied at Yale
and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). Additional studies were in
France, where he obtained a diplme from the Conservatoire Internationale dt, in Nice,
and he is currently completing his Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of
Minnesota.
Beth Winterfeldt is a pianist and teacher living in Saint Peter, Minnesota. She is an
Adjunct Instructor and Professional Accompanist at Gustavus Adolphus College and is an
active performer of solo and collaborative repertoire. As a proponent of new music, recent
recital endeavors include collaborative and solo performances featuring music of Messiaen,
Danielpour, Gabriela Lena Frank, and John Adams. In addition to performing, Beth has a
thriving independent piano studio. She earned a bachelors of music degree in piano
performance from Concordia College (Moorhead); and a masters degree in piano
performance, chamber music, and accompanying from Rice Universitys Shepherd School
of Music in Houston, Texas. Her teachers include David Worth and Brian Connelly.Beth is
an active member of Minnesota Music Teachers Association, currently serving the
organization as President-Elect. Beth is married to Chad; and together they parent their
three children: Quentin, Eleanor, and Cecily.
