The youngsters dropped in at Orrell Opticians to have their eyes tested and to try out

News that the UK officially went into recession in

the final quarter of 2008 was shortly followed by
advice from the Catholic church suggesting that
worried citizens should pray to the patron saint of
bankers for help in the economic downturn. DON’T LEAVE IT TO THE LAST MINUTE... CONT

Given the constant bad news over the last year the patron saint for desperate causes might be
a better option. However for those who prefer a more practical approach in life there are ways to
ride out the recession.
With a stabilisation of property prices still to come the most sensible option is to be fastidious
with finances and personal affairs.
Every cloud has a silver lining and flat owners with long leases should take advantage of lower
property values and extend their leases.
Now is the time to do this as the property value is a very significant factor in determining the
cost of extending the lease or buying the freehold.
Flat owners could actually benefit from the lower prices in the market. Most leases run for 99
years, but once they have less than 80 years left to run the cost of buying a lease extension
increases significantly. However, it is possible to extend the lease and it is cheaper to do so
when the market values are low, as the cost of extending is partly determined by the value of the
property. Many solicitors will be able to advise and assist so that owners can take advantage of
this opportunity.
Extending the lease could make it more saleable, so leaseholders should contact their solicitors
and look into extending their term even if they are not planning on selling straight away.
Delaying it could hit flat owners with a double whammy. When property prices go up and the
length of time left on the lease has gone down, it will be more expensive to extend it.
Once a leaseholder has been in the property for two years they have a right to extend the term.
However, there are circumstances whereby extending the leasehold might not be possible. A
property solicitor will be able to advise on this.
As banks and other lenders continue to restrict lending, anyone wishing to sell their leasehold
will find buyers harder to come by. Extending the lease is likely to help their cause.
Lenders are reluctant to lend to a buyer purchasing a short lease, as mortgages tend to require
the lease to be at least two-and-a-half times the length of the loan. A lender is unlikely to offer a
25 year loan on a lease that has 35 years to run.
Sellers with longer leaseholds will therefore see more interest from potential buyers who stand a
much greater chance of obtaining a loan.

Students take the plunge for a

good cause
ENERGETIC students with a commitment
to helping others are swimming a distance
equivalent to the English Channel – at
Ellesmere Port’s EPIC centre.
Ten Public Services students from West
Cheshire College are planning to swim in
shifts each Friday until the 22 mile target has been reached.
Tutor Lesley Billingsley said: “We want to complete the swim in five weeks so the
students are going to have to do 215 lengths each session to make the target.
“It’s quite a challenge but I know they can do it and I’m sure they will enjoy it too.”
The students are being sponsored for the swim with all proceeds going to the Mayor’s
Charity, which this year is raising funds for the Sea Cadets and organisations for the
disabled.
Public Services students embark on a ‘cross channel swim’ at the EPIC centre to
raise funds for the Mayor’s charity.

‘Pimped’ police van drives home serious message

A POLICE Panda van, ‘pimped’ by a winning team of West Cheshire College motor
vehicle students is now heading up a campaign to encourage safer driving.
The competition, based on the popular TV programme Pimp My Ride, was
organised by Cheshire Road Safety Partnership to give motor vehicle students
across the county a chance to ‘pimp’ a police vehicle to their own imaginative design.
The team from West Cheshire College were named the winners and saw their
interactive design, which includes high-tech in-car entertainment systems, flat screen
TVs and an Xbox, turned into reality.
CSRP manager Lee Murphy said: “Pimp My Panda gave us the opportunity to talk to
local young drivers who have a passionate interest in cars and want an input into the
road safety issues that matter to them — such as drink and drug driving; using your
mobile phone when driving; speeding; and distractions in the car.”
Following the car’s transformation, it will
be toured across a variety of events and
festivals across Cheshire as an inventive
way of interacting with young drivers.

Bright shades
in vogue
Sunshine is the major theme for
window trends in 2010, according to
Marc McQuilliam of Apollo Blinds
Wirral.
Apollo Blinds is at the forefront of
consumer trends in the home and
Marc has had exclusive access to the company’s trend bible (an annual report on the latest home interiors fashions) for the
coming year.
Marc said: “Overall, sunshine is a major theme for windows in 2010. Be it sunshine yellow as a colour trend, sheers that let in
more natural light or high-shine fabrics that shimmer in the sunshine.”
According to the report Marc said the explosion of bright accent colours in the home, which dominated 2009, will continue
with new colours entering the spectrum in 2010. As more homeowners experiment with bright and vibrant venetians, roller or
roman blinds. Marc expects to see more mustards, purples and turquoises.
Marc said: “The impact of colour on our overall outlook and emotions is driving the continued colour revolution. Homeowners
are looking for positivity in the economic downturn and these new colours deliver just that.
“Daffodil will literally explode onto our high street with the onset of spring – and it doesn’t have to be just plain, florals and
graphics that look great in this vibrant shade.”
2010 will also finally mark the death knell for the net curtain, according to Marc, as made-to-measure sheer blinds become THE
hot new look.
Apollo has more ranges in great new colours planned at price points that will blow ‘the net’ out of the window.
“Sheer fabrics deliver privacy and style to all types of home – from terraced houses to open plan city centre apartments with full
length windows overlooking busy streets – but don’t compromise on views or daylight,” said Marc.
For more information about how Apollo Blinds can make a home beautiful either call Marc McQuilliam on 0151 203 6160 or

HEALTH AND BEAUTY with Angela Bartlett

Q. As I have aged I seem to have quite a lot of nasal hair.

Is there anything that can be done to remove these hairs?
A. The hairs inside the nose serve an important purpose of
filtering out dust, dirt and germs; therefore removing all nasal
hair is not advisable. However, as you say, quite often as you
age the hairs around the edge of the nose can become thicker
and start to look unsightly. The easiest way to cope with these
hairs is with a nasal hair clipper.
The latest trend from New York is to wax unwanted nasal hairs,
as it lasts much longer than clipping the hairs. However, this
technique should not be attempted at home. Seek
the advice of a qualified therapist. I, and other
specially trained therapists, use a special technique
and wax type that effectively removes the hairs
but does not damage the delicate nature of the
skin inside the nose. This is very important, unless
you want to replace a nasal hair problem with a
different type of problem!

Feel-good show for jubilee year

West Kirby Light Opera (WKLOS) is delighted to announce that, following its 2009
sell-out success of ‘Chess’, for which it has received no less than five nominations in
the National Operatic and Dramatic Association NW awards, it is returning to the Floral
Pavilion Theatre, New Brighton to stage the world non-professional premiere of the
award-winning musical ‘Once Upon A Time At The Adelphi’.
Written by Phil Wilmott, the original production at the Liverpool Playhouse played to
packed houses during Liverpool’s Capital of Culture celebrations. It’s 1930s Liverpool,
and the glitz and glamour of Hollywood pour off the luxury liners for their first taste of
England; a night in the city’s most fashionable hotel. Amidst the chaos and decadence,
no-nonsense Alice from reception has fallen for the dashing Thompson from accounts
– but fate, Hollywood, World War Two and a dizzying array of staff and guests
intervene in an epic Liverpool love story spanning 70 years.
The show which runs from 4th – 8th May nightly with a Saturday matinee on 8th May
is the centrepiece of the Society’s diamond jubilee year and promises to be a feel-good
family musical featuring catchy tunes and colourful dance numbers.
