My Dear Friends in Christ,

In todays Gospel reading (Luke 15:1-2), tax
collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen
to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, This man welcomes sinners and eats
with them.
Adults are rightly concerned about our children bullying each other. We try to teach our children
to do what is right, to include others and to be kind.
But adults in groups can also be bullies. We may be
comfortable with those in our groups and scornful of
those on the outside. We keep rumors going, playing
out our grudges and undermining anothers reputation.
The Pharisees had labeled people as either
in or out . What made Jesus problematic was that
he did not follow their rules. He welcomed everyone;
he even ate with everyone! When Jesus met another
person, he looked into their eyes and included them in
love and mercy. Jesus did not care if someone dressed
according to his norms, followed every religious particular or professed the right creed. Nor should we.
Yours in Christ,
Father Pedro Umaa, OFM
