TheIndianInstituteofTechnologyBombay(IITBombay)isoneofthehigherInstitutesofTechnology
inthecountrysetupwiththeobjectivesofmakingavailablefacilitiesforhighereducation,research
andtraininginvariousfieldsofScienceandTechnology.Itwasestablishedin1958.
The Institute is located at Powai in a campus extending over 220 hectares amidst picturesque

At present, Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral programmes are offered by Aerospace
Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Earth
Sciences, Energy Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and
Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science Departments and by Interdisciplinary groups in
IndustrialEngineeringandOperationsResearchandSystemsandControlEngineering.

Visual Communication, Animation, Interaction Design, Mobility and Vehicle Design and a Ph.D.

Departmental M.Tech programme in Materials, Manufacturing & Modelling (MMM) offered by
MechanicalEngineering,Met.Engineering&Mat.Sci.&Mathematics.TheShaileshJ.Mehta,School
ofManagementoffersa2yearMasterofManagementprogrammeandalsoadoctoralprogramme.
The Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in
Biotechnology, M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes in Biomedical Engineering and M.Sc.Ph.D. Dual
DegreeProgrammeinBiotechnology. TheCentrefor UrbanScience&Engineering(CUSE)offers
Ph.D.ProgrammeinUrbanScience&Engineering.TheInstitutealsohasPGDualDegreeProgrammes
(M.Tech.+Ph.D.)inseveraldisciplines.
TheInstituteonanaverageadmits1050candidatesfortheUndergraduateprogrammesand 1398
candidatesfordifferentPostgraduateandDoctoralprogrammeseveryyear.StudentsfromBangladesh,
Egypt, Ethiopia, Fiji, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Jordan, Mauritius, Malaysia, Nepal, Palestine, Sri Lanka,
Vietnam and Yemen are also undergoing training in various programmes. In addition to these
academicprogrammes,theContinuingEducationProgramme(CEP)organizesshort,intensivecourses
inspecializedtopicsbothforpracticingengineersaswellasforteachersfromengineeringcolleges;
and also conducts seminar and conferences on current scientific and technological developments.
Further, teachers from various engineering colleges also join Institute for the postgraduate and
doctoralprogrammes.underQualityImprovementProgramme(QIP).

A.2) RESEARCHFACILITIES
Allthedepartments,centres,schoolsandinterdisciplinarygroupsoftheInstitutehavewellequipped
research laboratories and workshop facilities. In addition, there are a number of central facilities,
whichincludeComputerCentre,CentralLibraryandCentralWorkshop.TheCentralLibraryhasavery
largecollectionofbooks,backvolumesofperiodicals,standardspecificationsandotherliterature.The
Librarynowhasmorethan3lakhsbooksandvolumesandsubscribestoover1500currentjournalsin
Science,Engineering,HumanitiesandSocialSciences.TheComputerCentreofIITBombayprovides

highendnetworkedcomputingfacilities.
TheInstitutehasmanyresearchcollaborationswithleadinguniversitiesinUSA,Europe,Japan,and
otherEastAsiancountries.Aspartofthesecollaborations,thepostgraduatestudentsgetopportunities
tocarryoutjointresearchprojectswithfacultyandstudentsfromtheseuniversities.
ThelocationofIITBombay,incloseproximitytoseveralleadingR&DCentersandmajorindustrial
establishments, offers excellent opportunities to interact with them and plan some research
programmes in collaboration with them. The Industrial Research and Consultancy Centre (IRCC)
coordinatescollaborativeprojectswithindustryandotherresearchorganizationssuchasBARC,TIFR
andCSIR.TheInstituteisactivelycollaboratingwithseveralorganizationsofothercountriesona
bilateralbasis.

A.3) STUDENTSAMENITIES
TheInstituteisfullyresidentialandhas16hostelsforstudents.Eachhostelisanindependententity
withitsownmessfacilities,recreationareas,etc.Howeverstudentsmaybepermittedtohavetheir
own arrangements for accommodation outside campus. Some flatlets are available for married
researchscholars.
ExtracurricularactivitiesareprovidedbytheStudentsGymkhana.TheseactivitiesincludeSports,
CulturalprogrammesandSocialService.VariousclubsoftheGymkhanaencourageindividualtalents
ofstudentsinhobbiessuchaspainting,modeling,music,photography,aeromodellingandfabrication
of electronic devices. A swimming pool is an additional facility. A wellplanned Student Activities
Centre(SAC)routinelyorganizesseveralvibrantextracurricularevents.

A.4)

M.TECH.PROGRAMME

The Institute offers Master of Technology programmes in various disciplines. The aim of the
programmeistotrainthestudentsindeepertheoreticalknowledgewhichwillenablethemtotackle
practicalcomplexproblemsofdesignanddevelopmentinindustrialfields,aswellaspursuefurther
academicachievementsthroughresearch.Forfulfillingthisaim,theprogrammestructureprovides
sufficientflexibilityincourseworkandthesisproject.
TheInstituteoffersafulltimeprogrammeof2yearandaparttimeprogrammeof3yearduration.
StudentsareadmittedtothefulltimeprogrammeunderthecategoriesofTeachingAssistantship(TA),
TeachingAssistantshipthroughProject(TAP),FellowshipAward(FA),andSponsored(SW).Thepart
time programme is available to the students admitted under the categories of Sponsored (SW),
InstituteResearchAssistantship(RA),ResearchAssistantshipthroughProject(RAP),ProjectStaff(PS)
and Institute Staff (IS). PS and IS categories are only for persons employed at IIT Bombay. The
workinghoursforthefulltimeandparttimeprogrammesarethesame.Thelecturesarescheduledin
timeslotsextendingfrom8.30a.m.to8.00p.m.

engineeringandhasmadetremendousprogressinthelast4decades.Thishasbeenaidedbyrapid
advancementsinSemiconductorTechnology,InformationTechnology,andBiotechnology.Inthefield
ofBiomedicalEngineering,researcherswithexpertiseindiverseareasworktowardstheunifiedgoal
ofcreatingproductsandtechniquesforbetterhealthcare.Thebackgroundsoffacultyreflectthewide
spectrumofexpertiserequiredtomakebetterandmoreaffordablehealthcareareality.Further,the

Overthefirsttwosemesters,M.Tech.studentsarerequiredtodosubstantialamountofcourseworkto
complementtheirundergraduateormastersleveleducation.Thethirdsemesterisdevotedmostlyto
theM.Tech.projectsalthoughsomecoursesmayalsobetaken.Thefourthsemesterisfullydevotedto
completionoftheproject.Thecurriculumhasbeendesignedtoprovideallstudentswithageneral
background in Biomedical Engineering followed by more specific knowledge in the area of their
choice. Theformerisachievedthroughcore(foreveryone )andcompulsory (forstudentswitha
particular background ) courses in the first semester. Electivestakenduring the second andthird
semesterprovidespecializedknowledgeintheareaoftheindividualinterest.
Inthefirstsemester,studentswithbackgroundsinlifesciencesandmedicinearerequiredtotake
compulsory courses in mathematics, electronic circuits and instrumentation. Students with
backgrounds in physical sciences and engineering take coursesin physiology. Further, everyone is
requiredtopresentaseminaronatopicrelatedtoBiomedicalEngineeringundertheguidanceofa
facultymember.Thereareotherelectivecoursestobetakenaswell.
Inthesecondsemester,allstudentshavetogothroughacorecourseonBiostatisticsandDesignof
Experiments.Studentswithbackgroundsinphysicalsciencesandengineeringundergoacompulsory
course in Clinical Physiology. All students are required to undergo a course on quantitative and
experimentalmethodsinphysiology.Therestofthecoursesareelectiveswhichthestudentschoosein
consultationwiththefacultyadviser.
