Definition:

Range of wavelengths or frequencies over

which electromagnetic radiation extends
Ultra Violet ( UV )
Wavelength : 4 x 10-5 10-7 cm
Frequency :7.5 x 1014 - 3 x 1017 Hz
Lights that are both visible(violet light) and invisible. UV
lights are given off by sun in large quantities
Functions on human life :
Sun tans
Hardenng dental fillings
Makes the fluoresce substance glow when uv light
strikes
Kill microbes
Sterilise
Detecting forged bank notes
Dangers:
Large dose of UV could damage the retina
Skin cancer
Sunburn

X-Rays
Wavelength : 10-7 10-9 cm
Frequency : 3 x 1017 - 3 x 1019 Hz
High frequency waves that carry a lot of energy. It could
pass most substances and is useful in medicine and industry
to see inside of things
Functions on human life :
Shows the human bone, because it could pass through
soft tissues and not so easily through bones.
Luggage checking in airport security checks
Dangers :
Getting X-rays directly could cause cancer, that is why
there is a protective plate to lessen the effects.

Gamma rays
Wavelength : < 10-9 cm
Frequency : > 3 x 1019Hz
Extremely high frequency waves and it carry a large amount
of energy. It pass through most material and quite difficult to
stop. Gamma rays comes through radioactive subtances.
Functions on human life :
Kills cancer cell and sterilise foods and medical equipment
Dangers :
Can cause mutations in growing tissues that may be leading
to cancer

Visible Lights
Wavelength : 7 x 10-5 - 4 x 10-5 cm
Frequency : 4.3 x 1014 - 7.5 x 1014Hz
Light waves are given off by anything that's hot enough to
glow. Lights are emitted through the vibrations of the
electrons that causes heat.
Functions on human life :
To see things (Illuminate)
Laser to operate compact disc and DVD players
Laser printers
Weapon aiming system
Dangers :
Bright light could damage the retina in the
eyes( Flashbangs, Sunlight)

Infrared (IR)
Wavelength: 0.01 - 7 x 10-5cm
Frequency : 3 x 1012 - 4.3 x 1014Hz
Waves that are just below visible red light in the
electromagnetic spectrum. Infrared waves are given off by
stars lamps, flames and from anything that's warm, that
includes the human body.
Functions on human life :
Remote Controls
Short-range communications
Night sights to detect heat waves in the dark or
beyond a wall
Passive infra-Red(PIR) detectors that ara used in
burglar alarm systems
Weather forecasting
Danger :
Overheating

Microwaves
Wavelength:10 0.01cm
Frequency : 3 x 109 - 3 x 1012Hz
Extremely high frequency radio waves. It is made by various
types of transmitter. Phones use transmitter chip and antenna
also.
Functions on human life
Causes water and fat molecules to vibrate to make it
hot Cooking
Mobile phones
Speed cameras
Radars
Dangers :
Prolonged Exposures Cataracts
Microwaves from mobile phones can affect parts of the
brain

Radio Waves
Wavelength: >10 cm
Frequency : <3 x 109Hz
Radio waves are the lowest frequencies in the
electromagnetic spectrum and mainly used for
communication.Waves that are made by various types of
transmitter depending on the wavelengths. Radio waves are
also given off by stars, sparks and lightning.
Functions on human life :
Radio
Dangers :
Cancer
Leukaemia
