Research design: Correlation
Statistical test: Linear Regression Analysis

Explain what the test is all about

The statistical design used in this research is Linear Regression Analysis which is a technique
used for predicting the unknown value of a variable from the known value of another variable. Therefore,
two variables are considered and these are variables x (independent variable) and y (dependent variable),
and linear regression analysis is used to predict a variable y for a given value of x or vice versa.
In this research, the predictor (independent variable) is the Bahala Na attitude while the
dependent variable is psychological preparedness for disaster threat. The values for each variable were
obtained through giving out questionnaires to participants who live in the West Valley Fault system. These
questionnaires measure the different factors of the two variables and hence, yields values for both the
variables. Linear regression analysis was used to confirm the correlation between the two. Therefore, y
which is a score has been gotten from the questionnaires was compared to the predicted value of y for the
linear regression analysis.

Why is this the most appropriate statistical test?

It is the most appropriate because since there is a value for y which is obtained through
computing the scores through questionnaires, we have a value that may be considered as a theoretical
yield. This theoretical yield may be compared to another yield (the value of y obtained through
computation using linear regression analysis, which is also considered the predicted value for y using x).

Summary of research
This study aimed to determine if there is a significant relationship between the Bahala Na
Attitude which is a known Filipino trait and psychological preparedness, as well is if the attitude is a
predictor of the latter variable. Through convenience sampling, the group conducted the survey which
consisted of a 3-part questionnaire (their demographic data, the Bahala Na attitude scale, and the
Psychological Preparedness for Disaster Threat Scale) to 555 adult residents (18-70 years old) from
Muntinlupa, Taguig, Marikina, Makati, and Quezon City.

The Bahala Na Attitude scale, developed by De Mesa, De Mesa, Demonteverde, and Picart
(2014), consisted of 15 questions categorized under the factors of the said attitude such as fatalism,
determination, and belief to a higher being. While the Psychological Preparedness for Disaster Threat
scale, which was developed by Zulch, Morrissey, Reser, and Creed (2012), consisted of 26 items
measuring the ability to manage and be aware of ones as well as others emotions, and their perceived
knowledge and responsibility.
Contrary to stereotypical belief, the results of the the study suggest that the Bahala Na attidtude
functions more of as motivation to take action, since people have already accepted the situation they are
in and that they actually take it quite seriously, especially in facilitative situations (situations that are
beyond mans control; i.e. natural calamities/disasters). The researchers concluded that the Bahala Na
attitude had a significant positive relationship with psychological preparedness, and that it is a strong
predictor of the latter variable, too (B=0.449, p < 0.001, R2= 0.201).

If you were asked to replicate the research and change something in the research, what changes will
you do?
The research conducted focused more on the facilitative situations in determining the relationship
of the attitude to psychological preparedness. Agreeing with what the group also suggested, this research
may also be conducted in the context of debilitative situations to somehow be able to correlate the two
variables between the two given situations.
