It was interesting and informative to hear our Mayor

Councilor James Long speak this past week about
his passionate commitment to Australian Citizenship and paralleling this to the ethics and commitment of Rotary. We were privileged that he joined
us, and paid us the compliment of speaking genuinely about this.

NO MEETING DUE TO EASTER

At the meeting David Hone also spoke about the

commitment that the Club was able to make to the
Melbourne Indigenous Transition School (MITS)
with the aid of a District Grant. With $3000 we had
put aside for an Indigenous project and $3000 from
District we were able to support one element of
their programme. We will be supporting Winter
packages for the students as this will be a very
practical way to assist. When the students first arrive from far North Australia they will not be used
to, nor prepared for the cold of winter. This package will support the winter needs of 15 students for
one year whilst they transition in their education.
David Hone has taken active carriage of how we
can engage with Indigenous issues and I am sure
this is just the beginning of whatever particular
causes we support.

ago Kylie the President from Hampton was telling

me that they are going to trial a new structure

for meetings.

New Members

One week will be a traditional meeting with

speaker, one a Board meeting, one week for
Committee/ Project meetings and one a vocational night. Itll be interesting to see how it
goes, apparently long standing members are
looking forward to the change (and the change
of venue to Milanos from The Buckingham).
As ever Dick Garner, as an innovator, saw this
structure from Canada and together with Kylie
is trying something different. It will be interesting to see how it goes. One plus would be that
the cost of the meals would come down markedly as the only usual meal will be the meeting
night

With the induction of our sixth recent new member Mary Cunnington last week, our membership
is now 48 of whom10 are female. We also have
other prospective members visiting our club to
see if we are the club for them.

I am looking forward to the meeting next week

and our talk from Heather and Peter about the
Farmers Market and any ensuing discussions
we have from that. I also will welcome Chris
Mara to speak about Interplast.
Thank you all for the work you do every day for
our community and for Rotary.

Please take the time to introduce yourselves to

these new and prospective members and make
yourself known if you have not already done so.
If you see a face you dont know, go up make
sure they are welcomed and introduce them onto others.
It is a daunting task to enter a room of 50 or
more unknown faces. And dont forget, we
were all new once.
Show them why Beaumaris Rotary is so successful, friendly and lots of fun.

Speaker: Mayor Cr James Long

Topic: Citizenship

SER VIN G

Cr Long is also:

Past National President of the Australian

Bravery Association having served three
terms;
A Justice of the Peace;
Past President, Past Assistant Governor
and Past District Director within the Rotary District of 9800;
A foundation Director of Melbourne City
Opera Company where he currently volunteers in marketing, design, publications
and front of house for the company;

The following are his speech notes for the

evening;
I would like to begin by acknowledging that we
meet on the traditional lands of the
Boonwurrung people of the Kulin Nation and
we pay respect to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge that together we share
a responsibility to nurture this land, and sustain
it for future generations.

But it would be remiss of me not to

acknowledge the significant work that the
Beaumaris Rotary Club does in support of the
community in the local area, such as:

Medal (Australian Honours Year 2000) and the

Mayor James Long was elected to Council in

2005 and was Mayor of Bayside City Council in

Bayside Councils purpose it to make Bayside a

better place, and your Clubs contribution to the
community through the various programs and
projects you conduct, assists Council in achieving its purpose - making Bayside a Better Place
for all residents.
Together through all Rotary Clubs and other
service Clubs in Bayside we continue to work
to support and enhance the Australian way of
life.
Speaking of the Australian way of life, on Australia Day this year, I conferred citizenship on
65 Bayside residents from 22 countries around
the world. It was a particularly moving ceremony with a record number of countries being represented. And boy they know have to celebrate with passion.
It made me think about what it means to be
Australian.

This year we celebrated the 228th Australia

Day - a day that has become entrenched in the
lives of all Australians both young and old. It is
a day that we celebrate what it is to be Australian and how our country has been the great
land of opportunity for millions of migrants, inlm am delighted to be here tonight as Rotary is cluding those who were part of that first wave
very dear to me given my Rotary background of of early settlers.
over 25 years.
Our country is known for its values which we
uphold as a diverse and multicultural nation;
There is no question that Rotarians are a very
tolerance and I acceptance, respect for others
special group of committed people who serve
our community well, and enhance the lives of

and loyalty to maintain the freedoms and opportunities others fought hard for us to enjoy.
Perhaps we take it for granted, but this a rare
and precious achievement, particularly when
you look across the globe at the unrest that
some countries experience.
To remain secure in a troubled world and to
prosper in an increasingly competitive one, requires each of us to do our best at all times, in
all aspects of our lives, and especially to instill
in our children good values that we should always treat others as we would wish to be treated ourselves.
As this country continues to grow and mature,
we have the opportunity to continue to build
Australias future and every one of us can lay
the foundations for a stronger and fairer Australia. Australians have the capacity, the resilience, and the spirit to rise and meet global
challenges as they emerge, and together, build
this nation for the next generation and beyond.
We are the lucky country in so many ways

We have rights where others have none.

We have a lifestyle that is envied the
world over, and
A country so beautiful it remains in your
heart forever.

As I mentioned earlier, Australia Day was a

very special day for 65 Bayside residents who
became Australian Citizens. It was also the
celebration of a significant milestone for all
Australians - the 67th anniversary of Australian
citizenship.
In 1949, the new Australian citizenship legislation automatically provided citizenship to the
majority of Australias population and provided
a unique national identity for Australians. Since
then, more than 4.6 million people from across
the globe have followed in their footsteps. But
for many of us here in this room, we may not
have had the opportunity to participate in a citizenship. ceremony, given we may already be
Australian Citizens. But I thought it would be
interesting to share with you the important and
symbolic attributes of becoming an Aussie citizen.

specting their diversity.

Persons granted Australian citizenship enjoy
rights and accept obligations by:

pledging loyalty to Australia and its people

sharing democratic beliefs

respecting rights and liberties; and

upholding and obeying the laws of Australia.

Australian citizenship enables people to take

part in the affairs of the nation; as a voter, or as
a candidate for public office, or for election as a
Member of Parliament.
Todays Australia has been built from the combined contributions of our indigenous people
and those who came here later, from all over
the world.
We accept, respect and celebrate the diversity
of cultures and traditions that enrich our country, and we feel proud to call ourselves Australian. We are indeed fortunate that people from
all backgrounds can live together peacefully in
this wonderful country. We enjoy freedom of
speech and freedom to follow our own destinies.
Australia gives all Australians the opportunity to
live and grow in a free and open society and to
share the common good. ln return, we owe
Australia our duty as good neighbours and
good citizens.
As Rotarians, you are all good citizens and
good neighbours to your community, and once
again Council acknowledges the role you play
in our society,
ln closing, and on a personal note, l would like
to pay tribute to the partners and families of
Rotarians who play a vital role in supporting the
passion, community spirit and good fellowship
of all Rotarians. Without their support, there
would be no oil for the cogs in the Rotary
Wheel to keep turning.
l sincerely wish you all, a fabulous year ahead
and thank you for inviting me to present this
evening.

Australian citizenship represents formal membership of the community of the Commonwealth of Australia, and Australian citizenship is
a common bond involving reciprocal rights and
obligations, uniting all Australians while rePage 5
