Excerpts from yet to be published book by Fejiro Otovwe

Tribal affinity is good, but it has never been the best for progress and development.
Furthermore, obsessive religious prejudice lays the foundation for a riotous socio-political
environment especially in Nigeria.
Tolerance is what is needed to effect a positive change in our country. Religious tolerance, social
tolerance, political tolerance, etc are what is needed to reinstate peaceful co-habitation among
the diverse ethnic groups, religious societies, political factions, social strata and economic
divisions in Nigeria.
First, we must understand that differences are part of existence; even nature supports
differences, as a means of classification and not chaos. Not all dogs are German shepherds and
not all German shepherds are pure breeds. Not all plants are flowers and not all flowers are
roses. Our differences abound to make the words more beautiful; to bring varieties to spice up
life, and not to end it.
Otega was an Itsekiri born, Urhobo raised, a slave, a freedom fighter, a king, and so much more.
All these are but different nomenclatures for a man who selflessly changed the course of his
time. It wasnt about his tribe or his social status (he was even a slave), it was about his
personality.
The story centers on the love and selflessness as well as consequences of the opposite; covering
happenings both in the physical and spiritual word Sea, sky and forest -. It is about different
kings and kingdoms, gods and their territories; slaves and freedom. It is about life as it were,
many years ago.
This books is dedicated to the outstanding Urhobo nation, who through the years have sailed
through misty clouds; turbulent waters, through tribal wars and grievous mischief; yet stand tall
amidst the multitude tribes in Nigeria.
To her government and her kings and the entire people of the Urhobo Kingdom, whether dead
or yet living.
Even to our ancient warriors in ages far gone; our warlords sallying with patriotism and pride for
our great nation.
I dedicate this book to the Urhobo culture, to every Urhobo man living; To the Istekiri, Izon
(Ijaw), Benin, and to all who deeply appreciates this never attempted, first of its kind work of
poetry.
Even all who now finds their place reading this book.

DISCLAIMER
Some characters were inspired by real persons, events and places. For instance the Great Benin
Kingdom, the string of squirrels that helped Avwraka, and many others but in stringing them
together, I created a fictitious work that is not entire based on actual events. The Benin people
are not in reality cruel. In certain cases incidents, characters and timeliness have been changed
for dramatic purposes. Certain characters may be composites, or entirely fictitious. It is this
unique telling of this story that makes it a literary work.
PRELUDE
In subtle ether, the muses hum these folk songs on ethereal plains; far beyond the reach of
oxygen breathing mortals. All dressed in a white gown and a golden girdle around their waist,
the muses, seated on the sandy clouds; and cupids with golden wings hover about their heads,
blowing horns, harps and other musical instruments, melodiously backing up the sonorous
voices of these muses. In this manner, they sang, as the words and tunes gently escaped their
slightly parted lips.

---anurhobo song--While they yet sang, trees listened and clapped at the meanings. From a song came another,
and another, a third and a fourth. Melodious songs in unity and harmony from these muse till at
last a 5th.
---anurhobo song--Now, behold a great light afar, dazzling in its radiance, harbouring in its beam the life and times
of a great entity once lived. Shall I now steal a glimpse of this past, to further your amusement?
The sounds of tears of a new born, hastened the feet of well-wishers to the dwelling of the
Itsekiri god of the sea, Okale, who ruled
