Dr. Rahul Walawalkar / CEM, CDSM, CSDP
Executive Director - IESA & VP, Emerging Technologies
Rahul leads the Emerging Technologies & Markets practice for
Customized Energy Solutions with focus on energy storage,
renewables, demand response and smart grid technologies as well as
international markets. Rahul is founder and Executive Director for
India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA). He is member of the Board of
Directors of Electricity Storage Association (ESA) since 2009. He was
nominated as Vice Chair for Global Energy Storage Alliance (GESA).
Rahul has served as an expert evaluator for US Department of Energy for various smart grid
and energy storage demonstration projects in US during 2009-12. In 2012, Maharashtra
Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) nominated him as chairperson of working group
on Integrating Renewable Energy Sources, Micro-Grids and Energy Storage as part of Smart
Grid Coordination Committee. In June 2013, he was nominated as member of national
taskforce for integration of renewable energy sources by Central Electricity Authority &
Ministry of Power in India. In May 2014, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy of India
(MNRE) nominated him on the standing committee for energy storage and hybrids.
Rahul holds a Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University. He
holds Masters in Energy Management from New York Institute of Technology.

Roof-top PV Drivers
In most parts of India, clear sunny weather is experienced 250 to 300 days in a year. The
equivalent energy potential is about 5,000 trillion kWh per year
India will likely see a record growth in the rooftop solar PV segment. The key market drivers are:
government incentives, mandatory rooftop solar policies at the state level and the rising power tariffs.
The rooftop solar market is still at an early stage with many participants and an exciting dynamic.
Total installed capacity in the residential segment is 112 MW or 40% of the total market, But this market
is highly fragmented and dominated by local companies.

Roof-top PV
Battery is an essential part in the design of roof-top solar PV system. Small power rating and
longer life of the battery is the key parameter for this application.

Roof-top PV Potential
Based on solar targets and government policy for rooftop solar, ESS Potential is ranges from

IESA was launched in 2012 to help technology and system integration companies involved in
energy storage and microgrids to understand and capture opportunities in thro growing market.
In 2013 launched IESA-Knowledge Partner Network with a goal of addressing energy storage
applications in over 10 key sectors. Currently we have 40+ members.
IESA Members
Special collaborations with various trade groups including InWEA, IWTMA, AEEE, Indian
Electronic & Semiconductor Association etc.
Providing inputs for launch of demonstration projects for ancillary services, renewable integration
and C&I applications.
