OUR DAILY BREAD
At least 16 million people living in four African countries could be facing starvation today.
Harvests now being collected in Ethiopia, Sudan, Mozambique and Angola are expected to
be severely reduced.
The International relief organization Save the Children estimates that Sudan, for example
needs 3 million tones of cereal per year. But it expects an imminent report by the United
Nations Food and Agriculture organization to reveal a significant shortfall in Sudans
current harvest. Save the Children believes this shortfall could be more than 1 million
tones.
In other countries, such as Liberia, aid organizations have reported that people are
dangerously short of food. Civil wars in many countries have stopped supplies from
reaching the hungry and have prevented proper monitoring of the problem.
Due to the failure of seasonal rains, the hunger crisis appears most serious in Ethiopia and
Sudan. The harvest has not totally failed throughout both countries. In theory, there will
probably be enough food to feed the population until next year. Although the most
vulnerable may in fact starve because they cant afford to buy it.
The world actually produces more than enough food to feed its entire population. But
famines occur because this food is unequally distributed. Parts of the Soviet Union, for
instance, are now facing food shortages while other parts have plenty.
Many factors affect how well food is distributed, such as a countrys history, its
volume of debt and natural resources. International financial organizations have
been criticized for responding too late, or in the wrong way. Developing countries
are now increasingly turning to small scale projects designed to cut the risks of
famine.
The average person should consume no less than 2,400 calories every day according to
the United Nations. Below this level chronic malnutrition may eventually occur.
