BangladeshhasmadeconsiderableprogressinachievingtheMillenniumDevelopment
Goals(MDGs),particularlyinpovertyalleviation.Thegoalwastoreducepovertyto29
percentbytheyear2015.Twoyearsaheadoftime,in2013,ithasbeenpossibleto
bringthisdownto26.2percent.
AmongtheeightgoalsofMDG,itwillbepossibletofullymeetthetargetssetfor
reducinginfantmortalityandimprovingmaternalhealth.Thegoalswhichwillnotbe
fullymetareeradicatingextremepovertyandhunger,achievinguniversalprimary
education,achievinggenderequalityandempowermentofwomen.However,
Bangladeshisconsideringtheachievementsmadeinthesesectorstobesuccessful.
ThiswasrevealedinthelatestreportofthePlanningCommission'sGeneralEconomic
Division.AmeetingwasheldinthePlanningCommission'sNECconferenceroom
yesterdayinthisregard.
TheeightmillenniumdevelopmentgoalssetbytheUnitedNationsin2000,tobe
achievedby2015,includeeradicationofextremepovertyandhungerachieving
universalprimaryeducationgenderequalityandwomen'sempowermentreductionof
infantmortalityimprovementofmaternalhealthcombatingHIV/AIDS,malariaand
otherdiseasesensuringenvironmentalsustainabilityand,developingglobal
partnershipfordevelopment.
Sixtyindicatorshavebeensettomonitortheprogressofachievingthegoals.Manyof
theseindicatorshavenotbeenreviewedinthereport.Bangladeshhaspublished
reportsofitsprogressinMDGfromtimetotime.Yesterdaywastheseventhreportin
thisregard.
Indicatorsofprogress:Onethirdofthe60indicatorstomeasureprogressinMDG
achievementhavebeenachievedsofar,orareonthewaytobeingachieved.The
goalsof12indicatorshavebeenfullyachievedsofar.Theseincludepoverty
alleviation,eradicationofchildmalnutrition,boyandgirlratioinprimaryeducation,
reductionofmortalityofinfantsunderfiveyearsofage,combatingHIV,malaria,
tuberculosis,andmore.
Bangladeshisgoingintherightdirectionwherenineotherindicatorsareconcerned.
Theseareregistrationinprimaryeducation,reductionofinfantmortality,immunisation,

maternalmortalityreduction,prevalenceofHIV,treatmentofchildrenunderfiveyears
ofageformalaria,reductionofdeathratesduetotuberculosisandaccesstodrinking
water.
Ifthepaceofprogresscontinuesasitis,thereare15indicatorswhichwillnotbemet.
Thisincludesemploymentforhundredpercentofthepopulation,literacyfor1524year
olds,reducingthenumberofpeoplelivingbelowonedollarperday,bringingthe
proportionofwomen'sseatsinparliamentuptillonethird,equalisingthenumberof
menandwomenemployedinthenonagriculturalsector,reducingthenumberof
personsafflictedwithtuberculosis,increasinglandareacoveredbyforeststo20
percentandensuringsanitationfacilitiesforhundredpercentofthepopulation.
Successinpovertyalleviation:OfthefourindicatorsforthismostimportantMDG,
theindicatorforreductionofpovertyratehasbeenmet.Reducingthegapbetween
povertyandextremepovertyhasalsobeenachieved.Thegoalwastoreducethisgap
to8percentby2015.By2013ithasbeenreducedto6.5percent.
Discussion:AtthemeetingontheMDGprogressreport,FinanceMinisterAMA
MuhithsaidthatwithintwoorthreeyearstimeBangladeshwillleavetheLeast
DevelopedCountry(LDC)categoryandpreparationsmustbemadeforthis.
UNDPCountryDirectorPaulineTamesissaidthatinthenextMDGplanBangladesh
wouldhavetogivemuchimportancetotheChittagongHillTracts.Inclusive
developmentwouldnotbepossiblewhileleavingoutalargesectionofthepopulation.
