Central Japan Christian Mission has been undergoing some

changes recently. In recent Trustees* Meetings Harold Akers was

chosen to serve as Executive Director under the trustees. Carl

ic '

Chapman was elected as a trustee and to serve as Director of Fi-

nance.

Richard Coyle, who has been serving as Mark and Lynn's

Forwarding Secretary will be Director of Recruiting and Market-

ing (Public Relations). Carl, an elder of the Central Christian

Mary Joyce and Steve

Mark and I_ each had about 80 students in our Bible Seminar classes at Obirin College. We

have a ^0 minute study followed by the same amount of time in chapel, both required. Our text
for the study was "Is Jesus God or Just a Carpenter?" (an exact translation of the Japanese).

In a survey following the course we got replies from ^ students, 67_ of whom declared "I

be

lieve Jesus is God". Eight others said, "My faith in God is stronger because of this study",
and 23 persons reported "I was made to think more deeply about God than ever before".
Mr. Stephen li.jima, Minister of the Minato Church, Yokohama will lead the Sannobara Church

in its spring evangelistic meeting in our absence.

The dates are March 9th and 10th.

pray with us for the several prospects.

Also for the next ten weeks, Mrs. Leone Cole, veteran missionary living in Tokyo will con
duct a course in "The Christian Family". Eight have registered for the full ten week course
and still others are interested. Generally mothers in Japan are interested in ways to better
their family relations and are concerned about how to train their children in this changing age.

We have sold several copies of James Dobson's book, "Dare To Discipline". Pray for this effort.

Thanks to a special gift from the Northway (South Bend) Primary Church kids we were able
to add "The Ten Commandments" (English and Japanese) to our video library. We still have our
sights set on the Genesis Project. Both "The Book of Genesis" and "The Gospel of Luke" are in
Japanese and English.

Even though the Community Christian Church, Lake Worth, Fla. has been serving with us just
a few years they have increased their giving in that time. Brother Jim Greenwood, the Minister
in expressing his regrets that the church could not increase it this year voiced a prayer that
our dollar would increase its value against the yen.

This prayer has been answered.

Kathleen and I were refreshed by attending the President's Prayer Breakfast in February
at Camp Zama. Since we are serving the Japanese our table conversation was quite interesting.
A Major Clark, recently out from the U.S. told of two surprises he got in conversation with his
lady guide on a tour of Tokyo. "Sir, I suppose you are a Christian, aren't you". Surprised,
he replied, "Well, er, yes, I guess I am." When he asked her the same question he got his sec
ond surprise when she responded, "No, I am not." Of course we reminded him that Christians are
greatly in the minority in Japan. But, we wondered, "Which of the two really knew what a Chris
tian is, the Major, or the guide?"

Thanksgiving-Christmas, 1985

Dear friends,

^ blessed Thanksgiving Day to each of you! "Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord,
for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting. Who can speak of the mighty deeds of
the Lord, Or can show forth all His praise?" Of course we cannot say it all, but we do give
thanks to Him for what has been happening with us and His church at Isehara.
Students from the Christian Clubs of three colleges joined us in the mountains of Gumma
Prefecture for a Summer Camp September 2-5. Upperclassmen lead studies and discussions during
the day and I gave three messages at evening sessions. Interest and attendance both have in
creased at our Bible Studies at Obirin since that time.

We wish you could have seen a modern housewife getting off her motor bike, with helmet,

leather jacket and slacks. Mrs. Mariko Koizumi was scheduled for the testimony during the
morning service. She had studied with a Neighborhood Bible Study group. After a time she
began attending our church since her children had attended Sunday School here. On that day,
she told us of her having confessed faith in Christ, adding that she had not yet been baptiz
ed. The whole church rejoiced with her on October 6th when she made her obedience complete in
baptism. She now attends Kathleen's women's Bible study regularly. Pray for our prospects at
this important season toward Christmas. We are seeing an evangelistic spirit here which we
haven't witnessed before.

Praise the Lord!

Miss Junko Kikunaga (aged 5^) passed on to her reward on October

1985. Some of you may

remember that we had taught monthly at Shinomiya Orphanage during our early days in Kagoshima,
800 miles from here.

She was the housemother who had invited us there.

She first listened to

Mrs. Isabel Dittemore's weekly radio program and then completed the 56 lesson study of John's
Gospel by correspondence. She later was transferred to work at Nagaoka Senior Citizens' Home
about 1)^ hours ride from us and began attending at Sannobara occasionally. She was baptized
here on March 17, 197^. In April of this year r:he became -(11 and retuirned to Kagoshima for an
operation. All joined in prayers for her recovery, but the Lord had other plans. She knew as
the Apostle Paul did that "..
die is gain" when we know the Author of Life.

Missionaries Dale and Peggy Wilk"

inson are now living there and assisting during |the Turner's furlough.
Speaking of new church efforts, on October 20th I was invited to speak at the dedication of

another preaching point at Musashi Nagase near ^ayama City. Mr. Kaide, a civil engineer and his^
wife are buying a building which they use three days a week for tutoring. They have offered it
to the Lord for services each Sunday afternoon. Serving as the nucleus, themselves, they have
invited Steven Fleenor from Sayama to lead the services. Pray, too,for them.

October and November seem to be great montjis for weddings in Japan.

We had one on October

26th and are planning another for November 25rd which is Japan's Thanksgiving Day for Diligent
Labor. Pray for both these couples as the brid^s are Christians and the grooms are not yet.
