Now analyze the above:

1. “Obey Allah” and “Obey Messenger” both are complete sentences of Arabic.
2. “And” is placed in between them.
3. We place “and” in any language to separate the two sentences who have different
meanings.
4. Here “Obey Allah” means obey Quran and “Obey Messenger” means obey his
commandments and each and every act of his i.e. Sunnah.
5. If you say that “Obey Messenger” means obey Quran then this has been said in the first
sentence “Obey Allah”. Why Allah says “Obey Messenger” in addition in many verses of the
Quran together?
6. How can these two sentences which have come together in ample number of verses in
Quran mean only Quran?
7. If Allah only means to follow Quran then “Obey Allah” part was sufficient then what is the
need to say “Obey Messenger” every time not once, not twice, and not thrice but in many
verses?
8. Obey means to follow means to take all his commandments and restrict what he forbade
because he is the messenger of Allah, he is sent to guide us.
9. Quran is the book of law; all the laws have been given; now for details Quran says that
you refer to Prophet Muhammad PBUH.
10. And “Obey Messenger” means Obey Prophet Muhammad PBUH off course.

This is sufficient to prove the point but even if some do not agree then let’s go further.

There are two types of verses in Quran and here I quote Ibn-e-Kathir’s tafsir. Tafsir means
explanation; (the bolded parts are Quran):

--- ---
Allah states that in the Qur'an, there are Ayat that are Muhkamat, entirely clear and plain,
and these are the foundations of the Book which are plain for everyone. And there are Ayat
in the Qur'an that are Mutashabihat not entirely clear for many, or some people. So those
who refer to the Muhkam Ayat to understand the Mutashabih Ayat, will have acquired the
correct guidance, and vice versa. This is why Allah said,

(They are the foundations of the Book), meaning, they are the basis of the Qur'an, and
should be referred to for clarification, when warranted,

(And others not entirely clear) as they have several meanings, some that agree with the
Muhkam and some that carry other literal indications, although these meaning might not be
desired.

The Muhkamat are the Ayat that explain the abrogating rulings, the allowed, prohibited,
laws, limits, obligations and rulings that should be believed in and implemented. As for the
Mutashabihat Ayat, they include the abrogated Ayat, parables, oaths, and what should be
believed in, but not implemented.
Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar commented on,

(In it are verses that are entirely clear) as "Containing proof of the Lord, immunity for
the servants and a refutation of opponents and of falsehood. They cannot be changed or
altered from what they were meant for.'' He also said, "As for the unclear Ayat, they can
(but must not) be altered and changed, and this is a test from Allah to the servants, just as
He tested them with the allowed and prohibited things. So these Ayat must not be altered to
imply a false meaning or be distorted from the truth.''

Therefore, Allah said,

(So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation) meaning, those who are
misguided and deviate from truth to falsehood,

(they follow that which is not entirely clear thereof) meaning, they refer to the
Mutashabih, because they are able to alter its meanings to conform with their false
interpretation since the wordings of the Mutashabihat encompass such a wide area of
meanings. As for the Muhkam Ayat, they cannot be altered because they are clear and,
thus, constitute unequivocal proof against the misguided people. This is why Allah said,

(seeking Al-Fitnah) meaning, they seek to misguide their following by pretending to prove
their innovation by relying on the Qur'an -- the Mutashabih of it -- but, this is proof against
and not for them. For instance, Christians might claim that ﴿`Isa is divine because﴾ the
Qur'an states that he is Ruhullah and His Word, which He gave to Mary, all the while
ignoring Allah's statements.
--- ---

I would also like to point out that what Prophet Muhammad PBUH says is with the
permission of Allah. No prophet of Allah speaks of himself but from the permission of Allah.
Muhammad PBUH didn’t speak of himself; his sayings are actually the commentary of
Quran. Allah has given the Prophet the permission to speak and give the guidance and
explain to them the verses of Quran. The verses I will quote later in this post Insha’Allah
clarify the matter.

My brother here V9 and most others who think that only Quran is to be followed. Now this is
the worst illogic I have ever heard. If you believe that Muhammad is the messenger of
Allah, if you believe that every Prophet including Muhammad PBUH is masoom (innocent)
then his teachings are to be followed. What is the problem in not following him? But V9 here
probably thinks that all the Hadiths are corrupted but I would like to tell him that this is not
the case. The Hadiths of Bukhari and Muslim are the most authentic of all. And no Sahih
Hadith goes against the Quran. No Sahih Hadith is in conflict with another Sahih Hadith. You
should read about the science of Hadiths. If any Hadith goes against the Quran then that is
not actually Hadith but is inserted by someone on his own.

And now I give you some more verses that say about the Sunnah, if you do not understand
the meanings then visit tafsir.com for Ibn-e-Kathir’s tafsir.

1. But no, by your Lord, they will not believe (in truth) until they make you
(Prophet Muhammad PBUH) judge of what is in dispute between them and find
within themselves no dislike of that which you decide, and submit with full
submission. (4:65)

The above verse is very clear that we must make Muhammad PBUH our judge and we
should not dislike of what Muhammad PBUH has decided and we submit to it. Here I quote
the Ibne-e-Kathir’s explanation:
-----START-------
(But no, by your Lord, they can have no faith, until they make you judge in all
disputes between them,) Allah swears by His Glorious, Most Honorable Self, that no one
shall attain faith until he refers to the Messenger for judgment in all matters. Thereafter,
whatever the Messenger commands is the plain truth that must be submitted to inwardly
and outwardly.

(and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them)
with full submission.) Meaning: they adhere to your judgment, and thus do not feel any
hesitation over your decision, and they submit to it inwardly and outwardly. They submit to
the Prophet's decision with total submission without any rejection, denial or dispute.
-----END-------

2. Verily in the messenger of Allah you have a good example for him who looks to
Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah much. (33:21)

And here I quote Ibn-e-Kathir’s explanations:

-----START-------
This Ayah is an important principle, to follow the Messenger of Allah in all his words, and
deeds, etc. Hence Allah commanded the people to take the Prophet as an example on the
day of Al-Ahzab, with regard to patience, guarding, striving and waiting for Allah to provide
the way out; may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him forever, until the Day of
Judgment. Allah says to those who were anxious and impatient and were shaken by feelings
of panic on the day of Al-Ahzab:

(Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example to follow) meaning,
`why do you not take him as an example and follow his lead' Allah says:

(for him who hopes in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah much.)
-----END-------

3. With clear proofs and writings; and We have revealed to you the Remembrance that you
may explain to mankind that which has been revealed for them, and that perhaps
they may reflect. (16:44)

This verse clearly says that the Prophet will explain you; and Hadiths are the explanations
of Quran

4. Even as We have sent to you a messenger from among you, who recites to you Our
revelations and causes you to grow, and teaches you the Scripture and Hikmah (wisdom),
and teaches you that which you knew not. (2:151)

Now look at the two things here: the Scripture and the Hikmah, the Scripture is Quran and
the Hikmah is the Sunnah.

5. Allah verily has shown grace to the believers by sending to them a messenger of their
own who recites to them His revelations, and causes them to grow, and teaches them the
Scripture and wisdom; although before (he came to them) they were in flagrant error.
(3:164)

6. He it is Who has sent among the unlettered ones a messenger of their own, to recite to
them His revelations and to make them grow, and to teach them the Scripture and
wisdom, though before that they were indeed in manifest error. (62:2)

7. And it is not proper for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His
messenger have decided an affair (for them), that they should (after that) claim any say in
their affair; and whoever is rebellious to Allah and His messenger, he verily goes astray in
manifest error. (33:36)
8. Allah reveals to you the Scripture and wisdom, and teaches you that which you knew
not. The grace of Allah towards you has been infinite. (4:113)

Now what is this Hikmah Allah talks about besides the Quran? It can be none other than
the Sunnah of Muhammad PBUH. And there are many verses saying that Allah has revealed
the Scripture and the Hikmah:

2:129; 2:151; 2:231; 3:79; 3:164; 4:113; 5:110; 62:2, etc…

9. And bear in mind that which is recited in your houses of the revelations of Allah and
wisdom. Allah is Subtle, Aware. (33:34)

Here “your houses” means the houses of the wives of Prophet Muhammad PBUH. So what
the Prophet recited in their houses beside the revelations of Allah? It was Hikmah means
the Sunnah of the Prophet PBUH.

10. Also read the following verses carefully:

a. And We made them chiefs who guide by Our command (21:73)

b. We sent no messenger except that he should be obeyed by Allah’s permission.

(4:64)

c. Whoever obeys Allah and His messenger, he verily has gained a signal victory.
(33:71)

d. Whoever is rebellious to Allah and His messenger, he verily goes astray in

manifest error. (33:36)

e. On the day when their faces are turned over in the Fire, they say: Oh, if only we
had obeyed Allah and had obeyed His messenger! (33:66)

f. On that day those who disbelieved and disobeyed the messenger will wish that
they were level with the ground, and they can hide no fact from Allah. (4:42)

g. And whatever the messenger gives you, take it. And whatever he forbids,
abstain (from it) (59:7)

h. The Prophet is closer (deserving) to the believers than their own selves (33:6)

I think this and my previous posts on the topic are really enough to prove the point, even
though I have many proofs. I am sorry for such a long post. I hope V9 and others will read
the post carefully.
------------------------------------------------------

Now I am giving you some specific and crystal clear verses of Quran; maybe you
understand this time:

Those who follow the messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, whom they
will find described in the Torah and the Gospel (which are) with them. He will enjoin on
them that which is right and forbid them that which is wrong. He will make lawful
for them all good things and prohibit for them only the foul; and he will relieve them
of their burden and the fetters that they used to wear. Then those who believe in him, and
honour him, and help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him: they are the
successful.7:157

Prophet Muhammad PBUH will tell us what Haraam is and what Halaal is.
O you who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the messenger and those of you who are in
authority; and if you have a dispute concerning any matter, refer it to Allah and the
messenger if you are (in truth) believers in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and
more seemly in the end. 4:59

Look at the clear distinction otherwise Allah was enough.

And We never sent a messenger except with the language of his people, that he might
make (the message) clear for them. Then Allah sends whom He wills astray, and guides
whom He wills. He is the Mighty, the Wise.14:4

Prophet Muhammad PBUH will make the Quran clear for us by his Sunnah.

With clear proofs and writings; and We have revealed to you the Remembrance that you
may explain to mankind that which has been revealed for them, and that perhaps they
may reflect.16:44;

What is meant by explain?

And We have revealed the Scripture to you only that you may explain to them that in
which they differ, and (as) a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe. 16:64,

These verses show that Muhammad was sent to explain the Quran. It doesn’t just
mean to proclaim. To proclaim is to ‘baligh’ like in the following verse:

O Messenger! Make known that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, for if you
do not, you will not have conveyed His message. Allah will protect you from mankind. Allah
guides not the disbelieving people. 5:67.

And it is not proper for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His
messenger have decided an affair (for them), that they should (after that) claim any say in
their affair; and whoever is rebellious to Allah and His messenger, he verily goes astray in
manifest error. 33:36

If Allah OR Muhammad made an order it should be obeyed. Clear distinction.

He it is Who has sent among the unlettered ones a messenger of their own, to recite to
them His revelations and to make them grow, and to teach them the Scripture and
wisdom, though before that they were indeed in manifest error, 62:2

Messengers are sent to teach the scripture as well.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Some more proofs people who do not follow Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad PBUH:

1. And whoever opposes the messenger after the guidance (of Allah) has been
manifested to him, and follows other than the believers’ way, We appoint for him
that to which he himself has turned, and expose him to hell - an unhappy
journey’s end! (4:115)

In this verse, Allah condemns those who follow other paths but not of the believers. So what
was the path of the believers? Did they follow the messenger or not? Thus, if you open the
history books and review the lives of Abu Bakr, Usman, Ali, Umar, peace be upon them all,
you will find that they always tried to solve a problem through Quran; if they didn’t find the
solution; they always used to refer to Sunnah. For example;

a. It is written in the book “History of Caliphs” page no. 29 that: whenever Abu Bakr PBUH
had a problem or a dispute to solve or etc, he always used to refer Quran, after that he
used to decide the matter with Sunnah; but when he fails he used to go outside and ask
people about it that “have you ever listened to Prophet Muhammad PBUH saying about this
matter?” or “did Prophet Muhammad PBUH told us anything about this?”.

b. When Abu Bakr PBUH was asked to compile the Quran into a book, he hesitated; he said:
How can I do something which Prophet Muhammad PBUH did not do? Then Abu Bakr took
the advice from Zaid PBUH; he also said the same thing many times that how can I do that
which the Prophet didn’t do? But then Allah opened their hearts and they performed this
task.

c. When the Prophet passed away; the first difficulty was that now who will be our leader?
And who will be our Khalifa; then they thought about it and they remembered that once
Prophet Muhammad PBUH called Abu Bakr to be our Imaam then suddenly they chose Abu
Bakr PBUH as the first caliph after Prophet Muhammad PBUH because Prophet Muhammad
PBUH in his life chose Abu Bakr PBUH to be Imaam for Muslims. So basically they referred
to Sunnah.

d. The second problem after Prophet Muhammad PBUH’s death was that where will he be
buried? The Abu Bakr PBUH said that I heard Prophet Muhammad PBUH PBUH saying that:
Every Prophet is buried where he died”; so immediately the problem was solved. It is
written in many books including above book and also refer to “Authentic History; Question
225 Answer 3”.

e. After the Shahadah of Umar PBUH; all the Sahabah chose Usman PBUH to be the caliph
and they promised on the hand of Usman PBUH that: We promise to you on one condition
that you will follow the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad PBUH and
previous two Caliphs”.

2. There are many verses in Quran; the meaning of which cannot be understood unless you
refer to the Sunnah:

a. So when Zeyd had performed that necessary formality from her, We gave her to
you in marriage (33:37)

Can you understand the whole story and whole matter without referring to Hadiths? Can
you know who were Zaid and his wife?

b. He frowned and turned away. Because the blind man came to him. What could
inform you but that he might grow (80:1-3)

Can you know who the blind man was without referring to Sunnah? And who were the
people Prophet Muhammad PBUH was talking to at that time?

c. And when Allah promised you one of the two bands that it should be yours (8:7)

Does Quran say who those two bands were? And where is the promise of Allah in Quran? If
that promise is not in Quran then you have to believe that it was a revelation from Allah and
not is in Quran but you will know it through Hadiths.

d. When you were on the near bank and they were on the distant bank, and the
caravan was below you. (8:42)

Can you tell only from Quran that what matter is discussed here? And who was the
caravan?

e. Allah has given you victory on many fields and on the day of Huneyn, (9:25)
Can you know the details of many fields only referring to Quran when Quran itself refers you
to Hadith?

3. As I said that Allah sometimes revealed the Islamic orders through Sunnah, when we see
Quran we find many verses which are talking about those orders which Quran does not
mention but yet they are in Islam, so basically they were revealed through Sunnah. For
example:

a. And never (O Muhammad) pray for one of them who dies, nor stand by his
grave. They disbelieved in Allah and His messenger, and they died while they were
evildoers. (9:84)

Here the grave pray for non-Muslims have been prohibited, it means that grave pray was
being performed at that time but is it mentioned in Quran regarding the grave pray? No, it
was revealed through Sunnah.

b. But when they spy some merchandise or pastime they break away to it and
leave you standing. Say: That which Allah has is better than pastime and better
than merchandise and Allah is the best of providers. (62:11)

This verse is indicating to the “Khutba-e-Jumuah” (the Friday Lecture) but is there any
verse of Quran which orders us about Khutba-e-Jumuah? But yet every Friday Muslims all
over the world listen it and you cannot deny it.

c. And when you call to prayer they take it for a jest and sport. That is because
they are a people who understand not. (5:58)

This verse is talking about Call to Prayer i.e. Adhaan and it is clearly understandable that it
was being performed before this verse was revealed. So is any verse of Quran orders to call
before prayers? No, it was revealed through Sunnah.

It is also mentioned in other verse:

O you who believe! When the call is heard for the prayer on the day of
congregation, hasten to remembrance of Allah and leave your trading. That is
better for you if you only knew. (62:9)

d. We Muslims keep beard and we lessen our mustache; is there any verse of Quran saying
that? No, then why we do it? Because our Prophet PBUH commanded us so.
