GIC Student Mentoring Programme
All new GIC Students who meet the eligibility criteria will be entitled
to apply for a Student Mentor during their 1 st Term at the College.
To be eligible, new students must:

 Be registered during induction week

 Have paid all term 1 fees in full
 Not be holding provisional registration for any reason i.e. failing
to provide copies of all requested paperwork results in you
being provisionally registered, as does late fee payment

If successful, your mentor will be a former GIC Student who has

progressed to the University of Glasgow (GU) or an existing GIC
Student who is in their 2nd or 3rd term with us. Mentors will therefore
be drawn from a pool of students & former students with
experience of the issues and concerns of studying abroad.

Due to the limited number of mentors available not all applicants will
be successful so it is extremely important that you meet all the
necessary eligibility criteria. Allocation of mentors will be based on
your application form and our ability to match you to a suitable
mentoring partner.

For more information and an application form, please contact the

Student Services Office.

The Breakfast Club

www.glasgow.ac.uk/gic
The Breakfast Club at Glasgow International College gives
students the chance to improve their spoken English skills by
meeting with native English-speaking volunteer students from
the University of Glasgow for a light breakfast and a friendly
chat.

The students from GU are not professional language tutors, but

meeting with them for an hour or so every few weeks can help
practice your Conversational English skills, improve your
confidence and fluency and even increase your social network in
Glasgow. The best thing is that the Breakfast Club takes place
before classes start, so you won’t have to miss any teaching time
to get involved!

Some of the volunteer students are often happy to meet GIC

students outside of the Breakfast Club to give you additional
support with your language skills.

To book a valuable, but limited place, please contact the Student

Services Office, and please see the Social Calendar for Breakfast
Club dates.

Part time Work Information

Can I work whilst studying?
This depends on what it says on your visa. In most cases you are
allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term time.

www.glasgow.ac.uk/gic
The 20 hour per week maximum during term time is not flexible and
cannot be exceeded in any given week.

How do I get a National Insurance number? You should apply for a

National Insurance number when you have started work or if you
have the offer of a job. To apply you should arrange an interview at a
JobCentre Plus office by telephoning the National Insurance Number
Allocation Service on 0845 6000 643.
Where can I find jobs?
Jobs are displayed on vacancy boards on the upper floor of the John
McIntyre Building (A22 on GU Map). Jobs can also be viewed on the
SRC website at: www.src.gla.ac.uk/services/jobshop/

Try the local job centre...

Local JobCentre Plus:

20 Benalder St.
Glasgow, G11 6QN
Tel: 0141 337 7100
http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk

You can find a part-time job in shops and restaurant that have “Help
Wanted” signs in their windows. You will still need an NI number to
work for these independent advertised jobs.
