EQUITY IS THE TRADE UNION REPRESENTING AND
SUPPORTING CREATIVE PROFESSIONALS AND
PERFORMERS WORKING ACROSS THE ENTIRE
SPECTRUM OF ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT. THIS FORM IS
FOR APPLICANTS 17 AND OVER. IF YOU ARE AGED 10-16
PLEASE COMPLETE A CHILD MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION

You should be eligible to join Equity if:


OPTION 1 You have undertaken one job on an Equity
contract in film, TV, radio or theatre as an actor, audio artist,
dancer, singer, stage management, theatre director, theatre
designer or choreographer.
OPTION 2 You have evidence of earnings in excess of 500
from the industry in an area of work covered by Equity. This can
include work undertaken outside the UK.
OPTION 3 You can provide proof of membership of a FIAaffiliated union: www.fia-actors.com
OPTION 4 You are a student on one of the following courses
we will be happy to take you into full Equity membership as
soon as you graduate without you having to provide proof of
professional work within the entertainment industry.
Drama UK accredited courses, CDET (Council for Dance
Education and Training) accredited schools, singing courses
at Music Conservatoires, Theatre Design courses (full-time),
Royal Academy of Musics Musical Theatre course, The
National Centre for Circus Arts BA course in Circus Skills.

Subscriptions are based on your previous tax years gross
income from your professional work, and in addition there
is a one-off joining fee. Once you are a Member we will
contact you annually about renewing your subscriptions.

Pay and Conditions
Minimum terms and conditions across the entertainment industry and
guidelines for work in areas where there are no representative bodies.
Working under Equity terms is the best protection you can have.
Equity Card
Being a member makes a positive statement about your commitment
to your vocation and your place in the industry. Your Equity card is a
universally recognised symbol of your status as a professional.
Your Professional Name
We reserve this as long as it is not used by another member. Names are
crucial for the distribution of royalties and credits and casting clarity.
Campaigns
Successful national and international lobbying of employers,
governments and other bodies on a wide range of issues that affect you.
Royalties and Other Payments
Each year Equity distributes hundreds of thousands of pounds in
payments for use of members work in television and film re-runs, sales
of DVDs, videos and audio recordings, e.g. cast albums. Register with
collecting society BECS to make sure you get the money due to you,
see: www.equitycollecting.org.uk
Contract Enforcement
Where it is believed that there are outstanding royalties and/or residuals
from productions made on Equity contracts, we investigate, recover and
distribute these monies.
Legal Support
Free legal advice and support in disputes over professional engagements
including contracts and personal injury claims. If we take on a case we pay
the legal fees and the member receives the full amount of any court award.
Public Liability Insurance (PLI)
Full Equity members automatically have up to 10 million in PLI.
Members can print off a personalised Public Liability Insurance
certificate from the Equity website.
Accident and Backstage Insurance
Equity members are automatically covered for accident and backstage
insurance which operates overseas as well as in the UK if you are
usually resident in the UK.
Personal Pension
The Equity Members Personal Pension Scheme is the only one into
which theatre, radio and TV employers pay. You need to register (free) to
take out an individual policy so you can give the number to employers.
Job Information Service
The Equity Job Information Service gives up-to-date, accurate
information on real, paid work opportunities across the industry. To use
the service you must be logged into the Equity website.
Tax and Welfare Support
Free advice on National Insurance, tax, Jobseekers Allowance (JSA),
welfare benefits and pensions.
Publications
The Equity Magazine is sent to all members and has the latest updates
from the union. Members also get other publications such as the diary.

Please note we cannot accept any application to use a professional name
which is identical or similar to that of an existing Equity member. Inserting
a middle name or initial, or changing the spelling is also unacceptable

The Direct Debit Guarantee

This Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debits
If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit Equity will notify you 14 working days in advance of your account being
debited or as otherwise agreed. If you request Equity to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request
If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit, by Equity or your bank or building society, you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the
amount paid from your bank or building society
If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when Equity asks you to
