ASSEMBLY

2010
BUILDING A BETTER SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO

June 3 - 4
London, Ontario
SWEA Assembly 2010 promises to be a unique forum for networking, learning and strategizing with
thought-provoking speakers including David Crombie, Terry O’Reilly and Allan Gregg.
Join business, industry and public sector leaders from across the region in advocating on economic issues
that increase Southwestern Ontario’s share of direct investment. Participate in developing a brand strate-
gy that will position the region for economic growth and prosperity. Share your views on how our region
can raise its profile locally, nationally, and internationally.
Strong leadership and cooperation, will position Southwestern Ontario to seize opportunities, attract pri-
vate and public investment, improve public policy and strengthen the conditions that generate economic
growth and prosperity.

David Crombie
David Crombie, the former Mayor of Toronto, former Federal Cabinet Minister and most
recently retired as CEO of the Canadian Urban Institute. Mr. Crombie was a strong
brand-builder for Toronto as leader of the reform minded council that managed to
change perceptions about the city – strengthening downtown neighbourhoods, human-
izing development, focusing on transit rather than downtown freeways. He helped
change the city’s direction and image transforming Toronto into a global city.

Terry O’Reilly
Terry O'Reilly is the familiar voice -- and the co-writer and co-producer -- behind The
Age of Persuasion, the hit CBC radio show about the business, the craft, and the prom-
ise of advertising. Mr. O'Reilly has won hundreds of national and international awards
for his ad work, has been named to Marketing Magazine's Power 100 List, and, in
2009, was inducted into the Marketing Hall of Legends. Mr. O’Reilly recently co-
authored the book, The Age of Persuasion: How Marketing Ate Our Culture.
Terry O'Reilly will talk about branding—what is branding and why it matters. How do
we as a community redefine our brand and leverage the brand? What lessons should
be applied in developing the SWEA brand?
Terry O'Reilly maintains that this recession isn't just a downturn; it is a "reset”. O'Reilly
demonstrates how certain companies were able to gain extraordinary momentum com-
ing out of recessions. And as with any recession, we may be just coming out of it now,

but we will be feeling the effects of it for the foreseeable future. Smart communities
should steer into the skid -- embrace these changes, and get out of the "upturn gate"
early.

TO BE ANNOUNCED
The third speaker (TBA ) is recognized as a brand builder. He/she will discuss the strat-
egy behind establishing and maintaining their company brand – especially when the
brand has been tarnished.

Allan Gregg
Monitoring the economic, social and political pulse of Canada, Allan Gregg, the Chair
of Harris/Decima, is one of our most respected research professionals and political ana-
lysts. Mr. Gregg makes sense of current affairs -- the economy, public opinion, business,
government dealings at all levels -- and tells us where we, as a country, are heading. Mr.
Gregg is a pioneer in the integration of consulting, public-opinion research, public
affairs and communications. He not only has an intimate knowledge of the dynamics of
policy-making but also a deep understanding of cultural changes and the communica-
tions process necessary to forge a public consensus around government and business
initiatives.
Mr. Gregg will provide his analysis of a recent regional survey and how this information
can be used to build and market a stronger Southwestern Ontario.
Alan Gregg one of Canada’s most masterful interviewer and member of CBC’s “At Issue”
panel will moderate the interactive Town Hall session. Prominent Federal and Provincial
Cabinet Ministers are invited to attend the session to hear first hand from the various
SWEA caucus groups---opportunities, issues and challenges that the sectors face.
