The Prosecutor v. Ayyash et al. (STL-11-01)


From 12 to 14 January, Mr Alasdair Macleod, an
investigator in the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP), was
cross-examined by the Defence about his work experience. This included his time with the United Nations
International Independent Investigation Commission
(UNIIIC) and investigatory interviews he conducted
for the OTP at the STL. He spoke of the OTPs investigation into the disappearance of Mr Ahmed Abu
Adass, in addition to the video of the group claiming
responsibility for the assassination of Prime Minister
Hariri and its delivery to Al-Jazeera TV. Mr Macleod
also spoke about other investigative activities in which
he was involved.
From 20 to 22 January and 25 to 28 January testimony was heard in closed session.

Trial Chamber in the Ayyash et al. case

On 29 January, protected witness PRH 707


commenced testifying as a representative of Alfa Telecommunication Company. The witness evidence
relates to the creation and maintenance of three types
of records: call data records, cell site-related data and
the database holding customer information. The
testimony of PRH 707 is significant to the Prosecutions efforts in attributing the various telephones to
the Accused. The witness will continue his testimony
during February.

and Mr Ibrahim Mohamed Ali Al Amin (STL-14-06)
On 25 January, Contempt Judge Nicola Lettieri
ordered, in a written decision, in the STL-14-06 case
that the Defence shall present its case, if any, from 7 to
8 and 11 to 13 April 2016.
Last month, Judge Lettieri rescheduled the trial start
date to 24 February 2016. He ordered that opening
statements and the Amicus Curiae Prosecutors case in
chief be presented from 24 February to 1 March 2016.

On 21 January the STL held
a diplomatic briefing hosted
by the Canadian Embassy,
during which the President,
Prosecutor, Head of the
Defence Office and Registrar
provided an overview of the
latest judicial developments
and updated members of the
diplomatic community on
the important work of their
respective organs.

Current Opportunities at the STL


Chief of Information Services Section Registry/
Information Services Section Grade: P5; Deadline:
24 March 2016. The incumbent will be responsible for
steering developments and directing service delivery
in the fields of information technology, information
management, digital archives, records management,
library services, and information security in line with
best practices and the needs of the Organs to realise the
STLs objectives.
Senior Administrative Assistant Registry/General
Services Section Grade: G6; Deadline: 25 March
2016. The incumbent will be responsible for coordinate all the General Services Section administrative
tasks in the fields of budget, finance, procurement,
human resources, and records management.
Language Assistant Registry/Language Services
Section Grade: GS5; Deadline: 25 March 2016.
The incumbent will produce draft translations of
evidentiary and other documents from English into
French and vice versa. He/she will transcribe speech
from audio and video files, and will produce written
summaries of documents, among other tasks.
Security Officer Registry/Security and Safety
Section Grade: GS OL; Deadline: 25 March 2016.
The incumbent will be responsible for providing security coverage at entry points of the STL Beirut Office
and for the screening of all personnel, packages and
vehicles entering the premises, among other tasks.
Associate Information Systems Development Officer
Registry/Information Services Section Grade:
P2; Deadline: 31 March 2016. The incumbent will
be responsible for the development and deployment
of software applications to support administrative and
judicial information systems at the STL.
Arabic Interpreter Translator (roster) Registry/
Language Services Section Grade: P3; Deadline:
31 March 2016. The incumbent will be providing
consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, at the

duty station or on mission, at court hearings, meetings


in chambers; client-attorney conferences, investigative
interviews, official meetings and events from English
and French into Arabic with retour into either English
or French.
Court Interpreter Registry/Language Services
Section Grade: P4; Deadline: 31 March 2016. The
incumbent will be providing consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, at the duty station or on mission,
at court hearings, meetings in chambers; client-attorney conferences, investigative interviews, official
meetings and events from English and French into
Arabic with retour into either English or French.
Senior Information System Assistant Registry/
Information Services Section Grade: GS 6; Deadline: 9 April 2016. The incumbent will provide application support to all the users of the STL and assist in
the analysis, design and development of software applications and will provide technical support and training
on relevant software applications in the assigned area.
Arabic Translator Registry/Language Services
Section Grade: P3; Deadline: 1 April 2016. The
incumbent will produce self-revised translations from
English and French into Arabic, cross-read translations
produced by other translators, and revise translations
produced by other translators as operations require.
Language Assistant Registry/Language Services
Section Grade: GS5; Deadline: 14 April 2016. The
incumbent will to perform administrative tasks related
to the provision of outsourced translation services,
including the coordination of translation projects,
assigning language tasks, ensuring the smooth running
of translation workflows and timely delivery to clients.
Internships the STL accepts internship applications
for placement in the Chambers, Office of the Prosecutor, Defence Office, and Registry on a rolling basis
throughout the year.
