48 Antenna Hopping

48.1 Overview
This describes the overview of antenna hopping. The antenna hopping function enables the
downlink data carried on one TRX to be randomly transmitted on another TRX. This improves
the quality of the main BCCH TRX data received by the MS and improves the network
performance.

Definition
Antenna hopping means that the downlink data carried on one TRX can be randomly transmitted
on another TRX.
When antenna hopping is enabled, the data carried on the main BCCH TRX can be transmitted
on other type of TRX, and the data carried on other type of TRX can be transmitted on the main
BCCH TRX.

Purpose
In GSM cells, the frequency, frame number, system message, and paging group of the cell are
sent on the broadcast control channel of the main BCCH TRX. These broadcasts messages are
important for the MS in idle mode to search for the network and for the MS in dedicated mode
to measure the neighbor cells.
If the MS is in an unfavorable position or the antenna of the main BCCH TRX is damaged, the
MS cannot receive the broadcast control messages from the main BCCH TRX properly.
The antenna hopping function enables the data of all the timeslots on the BCCH TRX to be
transmitted on the antenna of all the TRXs in the cell in turn. Thus the space diversity is increased
and the quality of the main BCCH TRX data received by the MS is improved. Therefore, the
network performance is enhanced.

48.3 Technical Description

This describes the technical aspects of the antenna hopping. Through the frequency hopping bus,
the data of a TRX can be transmitted randomly on another TRX. The antenna hopping technology
is implemented on the basis of frequency hopping bus and antenna hopping algorithm.
48.3.1 Frequency Hopping Bus
This describes frequency hopping bus. The antenna hopping technology is implemented based
on the hardware of baseband frequency hopping.
48.3.2 Antenna Hopping Algorithm
This describes antenna hopping algorithm. Through the antenna hopping frequency list and the
ID algorithm, antenna hopping algorithm ensures that the frequency and data of each frame on
the frequency hopping bus is unique and has a one-to-one relationship with the TRX number.

48.3.1 Frequency Hopping Bus

This describes frequency hopping bus. The antenna hopping technology is implemented based
on the hardware of baseband frequency hopping.
When baseband frequency hopping and antenna hopping are enabled, a large amount of data
exchange is performed between different TRXs in the cabinet. Frequency hopping bus is
introduced to facilitate the data exchange. When the antenna hopping function is realized, each
TRX sends the TX frequency, TX ID, and data of the current frame to the frequency hopping
bus during timeslot interval. The TRX receives the corresponding frequency and data from the
frequency hopping bus, and then configure the RF based on the frequency. Then, the RF sends
the data to the MS over the Um interface.
Figure 48-1 shows the position of the frequency hopping bus in the BTS.

Build the antenna hopping frequency list based on the frequency information configured on the
BSC side. The BTS searches for the frequency from the antenna hopping frequency list when it
needs to send antenna hopping frequency.
When calculating the antenna ID, enter the TRX number to calculate an offset based on the frame
number and timeslot number of the TRX number. And then obtain an unique antenna hopping
ID based on the offset. Figure 48-2 lists the procedures for transmitting the data in antenna
hopping.

48.4.3 Verifying Antenna Hopping
This describes how to verify antenna hopping. Antenna hopping is invisible to the MS. To verify
antenna hopping, you need to use a spectrum analyzer to check whether the main BCCH
frequencies on the main BCCH TRX have continuos output signals. If the signals are
discontinuous, the antenna hopping is enabled.

48.4.1 Changing Non Antenna Hopping to Antenna Hopping

This describes how to change non antenna hopping to antenna hopping on the BSC6000 Local
Maintenance Terminal.

Prerequisite
Antenna hopping is mainly used the cells with poor radio propagation conditions and poor Um
interface quality.

Context
When baseband frequency hopping and antenna hopping are operating at the same time, adhere
to the following principles:
l

The number of baseband frequency hopping groups must be the same as that of antenna
hopping groups.

The same TRX number must belong to the baseband frequency hopping group and the
antenna hopping group with the same group number.

Procedure
Step 1 On the Management Tree tab page of the BSC6000 Local Maintenance Terminal, right-click
the cell to change Antenna Hopping, and then choose Configure Cell Attributes on the
shortcut menu. A dialog box is displayed, as shown in Figure 48-4.
