combed in Hankse cones packed in Bales and Bags. This mill purchased cotton from
various states like Maharatra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Hariyana, Karnataka and

11
A STUDY ON EMPLOYEES ABSENTEEISM IN THE SHRI GANAPATHY MILLS

They are mainly purchasing cotton varieties like H4, S4, S6, MECH, MCW5.
They are marketing the yarn various states like Karnataka, Maharastra, West Bengal,
Tamilnadu.

They are exporting 10 to 15% of the yarn to various countries like Germany, Italy,
Srilanka, Bangladesh , Singapore, Indonesia etc.

The Product (Yarn):

A yarn is a strand of fibers or filaments natural or man made which have been
grouped together or twisted for use weaving knitting or other method of constructing
textile fabrics.
Yarn may be delivered in to two classifications according to their use:
1. Weaving Yarn: this yarn to for warp, the length wise directing , are generally
stronger , tight twist, smoother and more even than filling yarns – Crosswise yarns in a
cloth.
2. Knitting yarns: Here one or more yarns form a series of connecting loops
that supports one other like chain.

The material (Cotton)

The primary raw material for manufacturing natural fibers, from time
immemorial has held the highest place as ‘King of fibers’ among the family of natural
and man – made fibers. Cotton is a vegetable fiber and is grown on seasonal plants,
which are scientifically known as gossipier Egypt. The Americas, India and Pakistan
and grinning methods and practices, cotton from same variety of seeds yields different
proportions of short fibers and thereby giving different average fiber length, although
the maximum lengths, although the maximum lengths are same.
Some important quality character of cotton is as follows:

12
A STUDY ON EMPLOYEES ABSENTEEISM IN THE SHRI GANAPATHY MILLS

1. Mean fiber length

2. Short fiber percentage
3. Fiber Strength
4. Fiber maturity
5. Trash content
6. Fiber fineness
Moisture content in the fiber.
Some common technical terms in textile industry:
One lea = 120 yards of yarnOne hank = 7 lea (or 840 yards of yarn)English Count =
Number of hank of yarn weighing one pound.
Draft = it is measure of extend of reduction in weight per yard in operation
The Process of yarn manufacture:
The following process flow diagram gives an overview of the process of yarn
production.
Basic Operation in blow room:
1-Opening
2- Cleaning
3- Mixing or blending
4- Micro dust removal
5-Uniform feed to the carding machine
6-Recycling the waste.
Blow room operations consist of a sequence of different machines to carry out
the above said operations. Moreover since the tuft size of cotton becomes smaller and
smaller the required intensities of processing necessitates different machine
configuration.
The purpose of carding
To open the flocks into individual fibers

13
A STUDY ON EMPLOYEES ABSENTEEISM IN THE SHRI GANAPATHY MILLS

1- Cleaning or elimination of impurities

2- Reduction of Neaps
3- Elimination of dust
4- Fiber blending
5- Fiber orientation or alignment
6- Silver formation.
The purpose of Silver lap/ribbon lab:
To combine the silver into a lab from besides for homogenous mix-up of raw
material.
Task of the Comber:
To produce an improvement in yarn quality the comber must perform the
following operation.
1- Elimination of short fibers
2- Elimination of remaining impurities
3- Elimination of neaps.
The basic operation of the comber is to improve the mean length or staple length by
removing the short fibers,
Since fineness of short fibers is low the overall microware of the sliver after combing
is high Because of combing fiber parallelization increases.
Task of Draw Frame:
1- Through doubling the silver are made even
2- Doubling results in homogenization (Blending)
3- Through draft fiber get parallelized
4- Hooks created in card are straightened
5- Through the suction intensive dust removal is achieved
6- Auto leveler maintains absolute sliver fineness.

14
A STUDY ON EMPLOYEES ABSENTEEISM IN THE SHRI GANAPATHY MILLS

Quality of the draw frame silver determines the yarn quality/ drawing is the final
process of quality improvement in the spinning mill.
Task of roving frame:
1- Attenuation – drafting the silver into roving
2- Twisting the drafted strand
3- Winding the twisted roving on a bobbin
Following are the advantages and the function of ring Spinning frame:
It is universally applicable i.e. any material can be spun to any required count it
drivers a material with Optimum characteristics, especially with regard to structure
and strength.
Function of ring frame:
1- To draft the roving until the required fineness is achieved
2- To impart strength to the fiber, by inserting twist.
3- To wind up the twisted strand (yarn) in a form suitable for storage
transportation and further processing.
Winding: To wind up the ring frame yarn into a suitable package (Cone yarn) for storage
transpiration and further processing
