REDESIGNING CAMARIN ROAD

A PROBLEM CENTERED RESEARCH FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE COMMUNITY

Background of the Study

In todays generation, transportation by means of vehicle is a real deal. Thus, it creates

heavy traffic where else. The cause of the traffic doesnt concentrate to the vehicles only, but also
the pedestrians and the vendors along the sidewalks have shares with the problem. In fact, the
population affects the traffic density of a certain place.
In this research, the paper will focus on the traffic problem in a certain area in brgy. 178 in
Caloocan City and finding a proposal to minimize the traffic flow in a busy commercial area of this
brgy.

Statement of the Problem

If you happened to live in Camarin, Caloocan, you may consider yourself lucky as we can

say that civilization is starting to sprawl in that area. However, traffic congestion is one of the
major catastrophe that every citizens of this area has to face in their everyday commuting.
For a student, lets say going to a city-state university who happens settling in a household
of five in brgy. 178, he needs, in order to attend classes, to ride a jeepney going to Zabarte.
However, the journey is a struggle. The jeep will have to pass the area of Camarin Road wherein
congestion is present.

In description, this area of Camarin Road is enclosed by a wet and dry markets. SM
supermarket is present, of course. There is also a jeepney depot in the area. The traffic is worst
at rush hour at day, then became moderate at late morning to afternoon, then back at being worst
at rush hour at night. The sidewalk is perimetered by steel fences with an icon of the previous city
mayor. By ocular observation, the cause of traffic can be enumerated by 5 things.
First, the deliveries. In most markets, deliveries have a service roads and a parking lot so
that it will not affect the traffic of the road. However, for these markets, the road is their parking
lot. Mostly, tricycles, jeepneys and pedicabs are being used for deliveries in this area and they
use Camarin road to park their vehicle and unload their goods to respective store.

Second, the parking. Most markets, or all of the markets, in this area of Camarin road
lacks parking area. Tendency, most of the cars of the buyers are parked along the sides of the
road. Some, mostly motorcycles, use sidewalks as parking lot.

Third, lack of traffic light. In exploring the area, it has been observed that the busiest
intersection can be found at the intersection of Camarin Road and Sampaloc St. But, the absence
of traffic light bothers the commuters and drivers.

Fourth, there are also vendors on the streets. Small time vendors, who uses cariton and
sells fruits and vegetables, clogs the street mainly because they stayed on the street to sell their
goods. Furthermore, buyers, or their potential buyers, are also on the streets to buy their goods.

Fifth, no loading and unloading bay. Jeepneys tends to stop where their passenger intends
to aloft.

Lastly, the sidewalk is also occupied by vendors. Aside from the fact that most of the stores
extends their stores onto the sidewalk, there are a lot of small time vendors and small kiosks that
occupies and clog the sidewalk. Thus, the crowd of people spills over the road.

These causes should be addressed in order to solve the leading problem in the area the
traffic. If the solutions were addressed properly, then there will be an ease traffic in the area.
People can expect a smooth travel just like before.

Design Solution Proposal

The number one solution in this problem is filing an ordinance wherein it bans the vendors

to sell on the sidewalk and on the road. It will give ease to the pedestrian since the sidewalk is
narrow and it will not spill the crowd.
Zoning is required to this. Zone the area where food products can be found and separate
it with hard goods and soft goods. Later on, design the area with all food products to support the
number of users that will visit the stores.
Next, it is good to redesign and expand the sidewalk in order to support a huge traffic of
pedestrian. Prohibit the stores in extending their stalls to the sidewalk to ease the sidewalk. Put
plantscape like trees and grass on the sidewalk. The design should prohibit the people in crossing
the street. This design is also introduced in QC, which makes it green and requires no steel
fences.

Put a proper jeepney stops elsewhere that is meters away from the area. The design of
the stop should support multiple jeepneys and should be an obstruction to the traffic. Just like the
usual bus stops in other countries wherein there are curbs.

The incoming infrastructure in the area must have parking for their customers and for their
deliveries. The parking should not be an obstruction to the traffic.

Lastly, traffic light should be installed at the intersection of Camarin Road and Sampaloc
St. to ease the traffic congestion in the area. This will also lessen the needed personnel in
manning the traffic since, based on ocular survey, the said intersection is manned by 2-3
personnel. If a traffic light is installed, the needed personnel can be decreased to one.
