I. INTRODUCTION
Blood donation is the act of having one's blood voluntarily drawn and stored, to be used
for future transfusions to other patients and other medical applications. Blood stored from
donations can also be used for harvesting blood components such as platelets and white blood
cells. Supplies collected from blood donations are important for any countrys medical centers
due to the significant number of patients daily that suffer from injuries or other diseases and
may require blood transfusions. Thus, it is necessary for countries to conduct blood donation
drives within their communities to ensure that their supplies are abundant enough to cater to the
medical needs of their citizens.
In first-world countries, most blood donors willingly volunteer in donation drives and do
not seek any incentive in exchange for their participation. In a recent fact sheet by the World
Health Organization (WHO), approximately half of the 108 million blood donations done globally
originate from high-income countries. This setup allows the medical centers of these countries
to have an abundant supply of blood for their citizens and possible patients.
On the other hand, poorer countries only seldom conduct blood donation drives due to
the high possibility of gaining only a small number of participants within their communities.
Citizens residing in slums may also contract diseases that render them unable to donate blood
due to health risks. Due to such reasons, some patients residing in our medical centers
nowadays suffer from delayed blood transfusions brought about by insufficient blood supplies.
Recently, efforts have been made to conduct more blood donation drives within the
locality to aid in replenishing the blood supplies of our countrys medical centers. Mass donation
drives conducted periodically by the Philippine Red Cross are among such efforts. Aside from
these, local companies and other firms have also assembled charity donation operations as
well.
The researchers plan to aid in this cause through a blood donation drive which they
propose to conduct within the school grounds. The participants of such drive will comprise of
students, faculty, and non-teaching personnel. They will also construct flyers for the event which
are to be handed out to disseminate information to the student body. For the upcoming drive, an
audience analysis survey was conducted which reveals more information about their possible
participants and their preferences for the flyers to be made. This paper details the results of the
survey conducted.

II. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

After the researchers have gathered the data from the survey, the results now are to be
discussed. First, the researchers has to come up with the questions to be asked on the survey
to have ideas on what the audiences are thinking based from these questions.
Preliminary information is to be sought like Name, Age, Gender and Year and Program.
Respondents are not required to inform us if they are not comfortable to provide these data. To
analyze the data, obviously all of the respondents are from the Institute and they are all
currently enrolled.
There are 28 respondents who answered the survey with one respondent without
personal information. There are 19 male respondents and 8 female respondents and one
without information, thus having 65% male respondents 30% female respondents. Age
distribution suggests that the respondents are 58% with 20 years of age with the second having
an equal value of 13.7% of distribution with 18 and 19 years of age. Ages 16, 17, 21 and 22
have only one respondent. See Figures 2.1 and 2.2 for pie distribution.

Most of the respondents are ECE students having a percentage of 70%, next is ME and
EE students which are having both a percentage of 7%. The remaining courses only got 3.7% of
the total number of students. It is given in the pie chart below.

Fig 2.3 Course/Program Distribution

I.

Have you participated in any blood donation lately?

Surprisingly, most of the respondents have not participated on any blood donation
having only 2 respondents who volunteered to donate blood. That is 7% of the total
respondents. One of these two said that he/she donated blood last month and the other
experienced it when he/she was in high school.

II.

How do pricks usually make you feel?

Figure 2.4 On Needle Pricks

Being afraid of needle pricks is one of the reasons why students dont participate in
blood drive activities. In the survey conducted, 11% are terrified to needle pricks. 59% are
slightly frightened and about 30% have no reaction to it at all. Since the percentage of students
who are terrified to needle pricks is comparatively small than those who are not then, many
students can participate in the blood drive activity.
III.

Will you be willing to participate in a blood donation drive if one is to occur within the
school grounds?

Figure 2.5 Participation on Blood Donation

A large number of the respondents said that they are willing to participate in the blood
drive with 70% said yes. 2 respondents with the percentage of 7% said that they are not to
participate in a blood donation drive and 7 are undecided which gives 26% of the total
respondents.
IV.

Can your willingness to participate in such blood drive be influenced through the
distribution of flyers regarding the event?

Figure 2.6 Willingness to Participate in Blood Drive through Distribution of Flyers

Advertisement through flyers is one way to inform people that a blood drive activity is to
be held. It aids in attracting blood donors and convincing people, especially those who havent
been a donor, to donate blood. According to 17 respondents out of 28, they are willing to donate
blood if flyers are to be distributed. But there are still some who will not participate even if there
is an advertisement. 15% of the respondents said no and 22% are unsure.

V.

If such flyers are to be made, what size would you recommend them to be?

Figure 2.7 Recommended Size of Flyers

In distributing the flyers, the size also matters to people. 59% of the respondents
preferred to see postcard-sized flyers. This is probably because it is easy to distribute relatively
small flyers and people can easily keep them. Meanwhile, 37% of it recommends the size of the
flyers to be similar to that of a letter bond paper and only 4% recommends bigger sizes.
Keeping flyers bigger than a legal-sized paper can be a hassle to some.
VI.

If such flyers are to be made, in what language do you think should they be written in?

Figure 2.8 Advertising Language

Since the target audience of the blood drive activity is the students, there would be no
problem if the flyers are written in English, Filipino or Taglish. The language to which it is written
contributes to the creativity of the advertisement, its capability to persuade students, and its

influence to the students. Most students like it best if the flyer is written in pure English. 74% of
the total responses are for pure English, 19% for Taglish and 7% for pure Filipino.

VII.

If such flyers are to be made, what detail do you think should be emphasized more?

Figure 2.9 Detail to be Emphasized in the Flyers

Details such as the benefits of donating blood and the beneficiaries of blood drive
activities can be included in the flyer to convince more students. According to the respondents,
any of these details two can be given more emphasis. 41% choose to emphasize the benefits,
41% to the beneficiaries, and 18% to other details.
VIII.

Please check the information that you find to be new to you with regards to the benefits
of donating blood

Figure 2.10 Information about Blood Donation that is New to Respondents

Information about blood donation that is new to the students may also be included in the
flyer so as to encourage them more to donate blood. 28% of the respondents are new to the fact
that blood donation aids in weight loss, 21% to the reduction of ailments in heart and liver, 18%
to lowering the risk of cancer, and 11% each to production of new blood cells and reduced risk
of Hemochromatosis. The mentioned information are benefits of donating blood and it is
observed that the percentages have small differences only. This means that many students are
not yet aware of the benefits of blood donation.

III. CONCLUSION
Based from the results presented, it can be inferred that majority of the respondents
from students of Mapua Institute of Technology are willing to participate in a blood donation
activity, having a percentage of 68.
In as much as the flyer is concerned, 59% of the respondents would want to have a flyer
with the size of a postcard while 74% of them want English to be the advertising language. In
addition, both the benefits and beneficiaries of the blood donation drive are the details that the
respondents would like to read from the flyer.
As a conclusion, a flyer can still be effectively used as an advertisement for a blood
donation drive since 63% of the respondents are willing to engage in the activity when they
receive a flyer.
