Experiment No. 12
POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE
Questions for Research:
1. What precautions are to be observed when handling potassium
permanganate?
Handling: Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and
wash before reuse. Use only in a well-ventilated area. Minimize dust generation
and accumulation. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Keep container
tightly closed. Avoid contact with clothing and other combustible materials. Do
not ingest or inhale. Do not store near combustible materials. Discard
contaminated shoes. Storage: Keep away from sources of ignition. Do not store
near combustible materials. Keep container closed when not in use. Store in a
tightly closed container. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from
incompatible substances.

Store in a tightly closed container.

Do not store near combustible materials.
Keep from contact with clothing and other combustible materials.
Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing
Remove and wash contaminated clothing promptly.
Do not breathe dust.
Keep container closed.

Use only with adequate ventilation.

Wash thoroughly after handling.

2. Enumerate different dilution of the compound and the corresponding

condition where it is applied.
0.1% KMnO4 in Water for microscopy
0.1% KMnO4 Solution Antiseptic Agent
1:7 1:10 dilution stock solution for wet dressings
1:10 dilution stock solution for Tinea pedis
1:7-1:10 dilution stock solution for Pemphigus
1:10 dilution stock solution for Impetigo
3. What chemical properties of KMnO4 are useful in medicine? Explain.
Potassium permanganate, an oxidant, is used for medical purposes including
as an antiseptic and fungicide. Dilute solutions are used to treat canker sores
(ulcers), disinfectant for the hands and treatment for mild pompholyx,
dermatitis, and fungal infections of the hands or feet.

Experiment No. 14
CUPRIC CITRATE
Questions for Research:
1. Describe the physical properties of Cupric citrate.
Green or bluish green crystalline powder used as an astringent and antiseptic.
It has a pH of 5.6 5.8 (5% sol.). It is stable under ordinary conditions.
However, it is slightly soluble in water, soluble in ammonia water and diluted
acid, easily soluble in hot citric acid solution.
2. State all the preparations in which Cupric citrate is compounded.
Cupric citrate is applied for the treatment of wine to remove fermentation and
storage related off-flavours (sulphide off-flavours, flavours caused by
reduction reactions, flavors caused by the presence of hydrosulfuric acid and
mercaptans. Cupric citrate was used to study the effects of copper on activity
and kinetics of free and mineral-immobilized acid phosphatase.
