2.Course learning objectives

To impart the basic concepts of control systems components and its feedback control
To Interpret various time domain and frequency domain tools for analysis and design
of linear control systems
To analyze the stability of systems from transfer function forms
To describe the methods of designing compensators

UNIT I-SYSTEMS REPRESENTATION AND MODELLING

Basic elements in control systems -Open and closed loop systems -Modeling of Electrical and
mechanical systems -Electrical analogy of mechanical systems -Transfer function: Synchros
-AC and DC servomotors -Block diagram reduction techniques -Signal flow graphs-Laplace
transform
UNIT II -TIME DOMAIN ANALYSIS

Time domain specifications -Types of test input -First and second order system response
-Error coefficients -Generalized error series -Steady state error -Effect of P, PI, PID
controllers. Need for time domain, analysis and its applications
UNIT III- FREQUENCY RESPONSE

Frequency domain specifications -Bode plot -Polar plot-Nichols chart -Determination of
closed loop response from open loop response -Correlation between frequency domain and
time domain specifications. Need for frequency domain analysis and its applications
UNIT IV- STABILITY OF SYSTEMS

Characteristicsequation -Location of roots in S plane for stability RouthHurwitzcriterion
-Root locus construction -Effect of pole, zero addition -Gain margin and phase margin
-Nyquist stability criterion.Impacts of stability and its important methods
UNIT V- COMPENSATOR DESIGN AND STATE SPACE ANALYSIS

Compensator Design and State Space Analysis Performance criteria -Lag, lead and lag-lead
networks -Compensator design using bodeplot introduction to digital control

Imparting the knowledge on basic components of control systems
