World Autism Awareness Day 2016

By Pat Morgan

We all know of a friend, relative or neighbor who has a

child on the autism spectrum.
When you look at the numbers, the statistics on autism are
alarming. In March of 2014, the
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) released a report on the prevalence of autism
in the United States. This surveillance study identified one in 68
children (one in 42 boys and one
in 189 girls) as having autism
spectrum disorder (or ASD).
During the summer, we may
see a child sitting on the beach
staring at the ocean, not participating in the fun beach activities with the others. We dont
fully understand what the
problem is with him or her. We
are afraid to ask their parent.
Our hearts go out to them, but
we dont know what to do. But
there is something you can do.
The eighth annual World Autism Awareness Day is Saturday, April 2, 2016. Every year,

autism organizations around

the world celebrate the day
with unique fundraising and
awareness-raising events. Cities around the world will Light
It Up Blue in various ways that
day, in honor of World Autism
Awareness Day. You too can
show your support by wearing
blue on April 2.
Another way of showing your
support locally is by attending the 3rd annual Light It Up
With the Blues A Benefit for
Autism Speaks. It will be held
on Sunday April 3 at Yer Mans
Pub located at 70-26 88th Street
in Glendale Queens. The event
runs from 1 PM to 7:30 PM. Admission is free, but you are encouraged to participate in the
many raffles and a 50/50.

I participated in last years

benefit along with my Solshyne
bandmates. I was impressed on
how well organized it was. We
played a set of music to an extremely enthusiastic and motivated crowd. This years live
music lineup features Rockaways own 3 Sheets to the Wind,
as well as Company G and Generations.
I spoke to Brian Walter, who
founded this event, along with
a dedicated team of friends and
relatives. Brians oldest son,
James, has a non-verbal form of
autism. For a number of years,
he was involved with other autism fundraising activities, but
came up with the wonderful
idea of Light It Up With the
Blues because he wanted people to get something in return
for their support. With non-stop
live music and with prizes donated from more than 20 restaurants and other businesses being raffled, everyone is a winner.
To Brian, awareness is just as
important as the money raised

for research. At the event, there

will be lots of educational material and posters on hand for
anyone wanting to learn more
about Autism.
Last years event drew up to
200 people and raised $4,000,
which went directly to Autism
Speaks. Based on the initial
response, Brian expects that
they will surpass last years
success.
Brian also alerted me to the
fact that there will be a New
York City Autism Speaks Walk
on Saturday, September 10
on Randalls Island. This will
be the first city-wide walk,
which means it includes participants from all five boroughs
(as opposed to individual boroughs or neighborhoods having their own Walks).
If you are unable to attend the
benefit on April 3, but would
still like to support this worthy
cause, you can donate online at

Remembering Elaine Freeburg

By Katie McFadden

Theres a Rockaway angel dancing up in Heaven. Elaine Freeburg,

owner of Mrs. Elaines School of
Dance, died on Friday, March 25
after a battle with breast cancer. The
mother, wife, and inspiring dance
teacher to many, was 38.
Freeburg lived her dream. She
had been dancing since she was
5-years-old and knew it was what
she wanted to do with her life. She
became certified as a dance teacher early on and was teaching by 18
years old. Elaine taught at several dance studios and previously
taught for Connelly Dance Center
before opening her own studio
in 2009. Throughout her years of
teaching, Elaine taught hundreds
of students ballet, tap, jazz, modern
dance, hip-hop and more.
In September 2015, Elaine was
diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer. Elaine put up a strong fight and
remained in good spirits throughout and she appreciated the support from the community. She
was so grateful. She had support

from family, friends, her dancers,

and groups like the Graybeards and
Rockaway WISH during her battle.
She remained upbeat and continued to teach after her diagnosis. Her
favorite place was her dance studio,
Stacey Bennett, Elaines best friend
and director of the studio, said.
Besides her love of dance, she
loved her family dearly. Bennett
said Elaine met her husband, John,
when they were 16 years old. They
were a love for the ages, Bennett
said. They married in October 2005
and had two daughters. Three-yearold Ella is the spitting image of
Elaine, Bennett said. In July, Elaine
gave birth to their second daughter,
Jesse, just two months before she
was diagnosed. Despite her condition, Elaine stayed strong for her
family, throughout. On Tuesday,
Elaine learned that her disease had
advanced to the point that it was
time to get her affairs in order. She
knew she had little time left. However, rather than sinking into a deep
morass, that evening she insisted
that we sing Happy Birthday to
John and eat the cake that Ella had

helped prepare for his birthday,

Bennett said. Elaine passed away
on Good Friday, surrounded by her
loved ones.
Freeburg touched the lives of hundreds. Several of her students wound
up teaching for her as they got older,
like Stephanie Shapiro. Elaine was
amazing. She could always make
you laugh. She was the most caring
and kind person. She would never
turn anyone away from the studio.
She would work out a deal with
those who couldnt afford it and it
was the most amazing thing, Shapiro said. Helen Timlin-Kilgallen, of
Ocean Bliss Yoga, credits Elaine with
making her business possible. Elaine
allowed Kilgallen to share her studio
space when she wasnt using it. My
dear sweet beautiful Elaine, you are
forever etched in all our hearts and
souls. I loved you like my sister. As
John says, You are the best! You are
free from suffering. I know you are
dancing with all the angels, Kilgallen said.
Bennett says Elaines passing has
been devastating for her students,
but theyll carry on for their teacher.

Mrs. Elaine
Without Elaine, its never going to
be the same because she brought
that spark, but it was her last wishes that the studio remains open
and well move forward and go to
competitions with our team and
have a phenomenal recital in June.
We have every intention of fulfilling
those wishes. She wont be here,
but shell be with us in spirit and
shell always be in our hearts.

Its hard to believe but the
home telephone is going the way
of the transistor radio and the pet
rock. Nobody uses it anymore.
Your kids call you on your cell.
And when theyre home they
wouldnt think of answering the
phone when its ringing. They
could be standing right next to
it and they wont even glance at
the thing. They know its not for
them, so why bother.
And you cant really blame
them. Chances are, the call is
from a telephone solicitor, scam
artist, robot or from no one at
all. Sometimes you pick up the
phone just to stop the ringing
and when you say hello theres
nobody there. I think there are
800 numbers that just call your
house to see if youll pick up the
phone and then if you do theyll
sell your number to another

company. We found one. Selling

a suckers number right here, a
human being still picking up the
phone!
Man, times have changed.
When the home phone first went
out of fashion it signaled the end
of era, when battle royals regularly
erupted with the sound of the ring.
Sheesh, in the old days, before caller ID, siblings would
lunge for a ringing phone. There
was a chance that a boyfriend or
girlfriend was calling and, God
forbid, if a sibling picked up the
phone. The horror!
An older sibling might start a
conversation or give the caller
the third degree.
A wrestling match might break
out or thered be death threats uttered in a strained whisper: give
me that phone or Ill kill you.
A lot of homes only had one
phone and no extension as a second phone was called. You were
lucky if the phone had a long cord
so you could stretch it and find
some privacy in a nearby bathroom or a stairwell. And those

were the days when there was no

call waiting. Somebody would
tie up the line for hours and you
just knew your friends were trying to call but theyd be getting
that incessant busy signal.
If we siblings werent fighting
over the phone wed be fighting
over something else and if my
mother were talking on the phone
shed be glaring at us, threatening
us with her eyeballs. Shed never
tell someone on the other end of
the line to hold on. Shed glare
and then sometimes make a fist
and sometimes mouth When I
get off this phone.
Those were the days of the rotary dial. Youd have to dial a 9
and then have to wait for the dial
to swing all the way back before
dialing the next number. Sometimes youd try to speed it up by
dragging the dial with your finger. That might save you a tenth
of a second.
And those were the days of
telephone exchanges, which
seem like a lost language to
young people. They cant even

quite grasp how a rotary phone

worked never mind trying to
grasp the idea of Nightingale 5,
Granite, 4 Neptune 4 or Cloverdale 8.
The only reason to hang on
to your landline is because cell
phone reception can still be as
bad as the old walkie-talkies. But
reception is getting better. We
dont even need landlines for
when the power goes out. Most
of those old copper lines have
been replaced by fiber optic networks. When power goes out,
chances are your landline is gonna be out, too.
As Miles Appelman says, Only
geezers use telephones. And
even the geezers, myself included, are starting to get sick of the
old phone and the bill that comes
with it. Still, its kinda weird.
Watching a thing die out. But
whens the last time good news
came on a landline?
Yep, it might be time to hang
up. Though come to think of it
it wont make much sense to say
hang up any longer.

Rockaway Wellness Expo Coming April 17

By Katie McFadden

Rockaway has become a

health hub in recent years.
There are so many places available to assist with
self-improvement, that many
may not be familiar with all
of them. Rockaways first
Wellness Expo is hoping to
bring several health and wellness-focused businesses, individuals and experts together at West End Temple (147-02
Newport Ave) on Sunday,
April 17.
During the event from 9:30
a.m. to 5 p.m., local exhibitors will show what products
and services they offer to the
community, and several experts will speak about health
topics at what is being called
a Festival of Body, Mind and
Spirit. The focus is about this
community, who practices
here, who sells their products
here and who has facilities
here, so that we can all have
awareness of whats available

in our neighborhood, keynote speaker, Dr. Nancy Gahles said.

The idea for a Wellness Expo
comes from Dr. Gahles, a Certified Classical Homeopath.
As a holistic doctor, Ive been
working with post-traumatic
stress and illnesses here, really since 9/11. I took a table
at West End Temples Shop
Til You Drop event in December and afterward, I thought
that we dont only need craft
fairs here. Lets have something that brings awareness
of the health practitioners
and services here. We have a
small community of wellness
providers that is building. I
approached Lori Musumeci from the Temple and they
agreed to host this event and
theyve been very supportive,
Dr. Gahles said.
Ever since the Temple finished its renovated gym
space, they have opened up
more to the community by allowing groups to hold events
there and even opening the

gym as a community volleyball center. We have the volleyball league and other programs and in keeping with
the fitness theme, we figured
the Wellness Expo would be
a good way to show the community the wealth of wellness
experts and entrepreneurs
that we have on the peninsula, Musumeci said. Soon
other like-minded individuals
started getting on board, like
Miriam Kwietniewska of The
Paleo Factory, which makes a
healthy mousse dessert. For
several weeks, Dr. Gahles,
Musumeci, Kwietniewska, Michelle Lieberman and Robin
Zweifler have been planning
the Rockaway Wellness Expo.
We love that everyone is going to be in one place for the
first time, including experts,
entrepreneurs and enthusiasts. We thought it would be
a great time to start the Rockaway Association of Wellness Experts and Enthusiasts,
called RAWE, Musumeci said.
Starting at 11 a.m., experts

will give 45-minute lectures

on various topics in the Temples Sanctuary. Among some
of the presenters are Women Image Expert Andrea Gitter, Kristine Memoli who will
speak about Reiki healing,
Keynote speaker, Dr. Gahles,
who will speak about homeopathy as a whole system of
medicine for the whole family, Bridget Carson of All Seasons Fitness, who will speak
about a program called MELT
for pain relief, and more.
In the Temples gym, the
Rockaway Wellness Expo will
bring together several businesses that offer fitness instruction such as the gym,
Burn Fitness, Hot Yoga Rockaway, surf school, Skudin Surf
and All Seasons Fitness. Some
businesses and individuals
will showcase their products,
such as the Paleo Factory with

Ramones Remembered
Ill Always Have Rockaway Beach

The Ramones, the 1970s band

from Forest Hills, Queens are now
respectable, which was never their
intent. Were punks first, always,
they once told a journalist, but on
April 10, the Queens Museum in
Flushing Meadows Corona Park
is paying them homage, whether
they would have liked it or not.
The museum will present Hey!
Ho! Lets Go: Ramones and the
Birth of Punk, a retrospective of
the bands archives featuring three
hundred and fifty objects from
early press packages, their guitars,
their ever-present leather jackets and T- shirts displaying their
iconic eagle logo. The show will
demonstrate how the Ramones
influenced punk era bands such
as The Clash and the Sex Pistols,
while they continue to inspire artists of today like Shepard Fairey.
This year marks the fortieth anniversary of their self-titled debut
album, opens with, Blitzkrieg

ing narrated Taco Bell, Diet Pepsi

and AT&T commercials through
the years and just last month, was
used in a GoPro commercial during the Super Bowl.
On their next album, Rocket to
Russia, lived my love, in the shape
of a song called Rockaway Beach.
This shoreline exists as a peninsula
in southern Queens, underlining
the borough, a seven-mile strip of
sand that faces the Atlantic Ocean.
In the heyday of the Ramones in
1970s Queens, Rockaway Beach belonged to us -- the teenagers -- no
parents, no adults. Taking two hours
to get there, my friends and I would
pile onto the city bus, the Q18, to
Woodside, transfer to the Q53,
which dropped us at Beach 116th
street, costing us seventy-five cents.
The Ramones knew what we
lived and where, proving it in
their songIts not far to reach/
we can hitch a ride to Rockaway
Beach/down on the playground
the hot concrete/bus ride is too
slow/the sun is out and I want
some.

e descended from those buses

like armies, carrying beer-laden
coolers and large boom box radios.
Boys with their long feathered hair,
white puka shell necklaces, cut off
jean shorts, white fringe hanging
down on their thighs while thin
towels hung from their back pockets. We, the girls, wore the most
daring macram bikinis, slathered
on baby oil, hoping to look more
desirable to our male counterparts
as we watched them play Frisbee.
I was fifteen years old the first
time I went to Rockaway with my
friend, Lisa in 1976. Our mothers
had allowed us to go as long we
called them upon arriving.
I called my mother from a pay
phone but she sounded so far away
that I had to shout, yes, I arrived
safely, over and over. I disconnected us by pushing on the phones
cradle because I couldnt hear her. I
hoped she had understood me, but
bizarrely, I wasnt worried.
As I was about to hang up the
phone, I saw that someone had
stretched a large piece of chewed

gum onto the earpiece, covering

all the holes. No wonder I hadnt
heard my mother. I showed the
phone to Lisa and we laughed.
That should have been embarrassing, how could I have not seen
the gum as I had put the phone to my
ear, but instead I felt light, airy, uncaring. Thats what Rockaway Beach
did, made me feel unbothered, free.
That seven-mile strip of sand
was my respite, remaining so, as I
continued to go there with different friends, in different mindsets,
through the years.
Now in my suburban town, fifty
miles away with my own teenage
child, Im not that far from Rockaway Beach, but far enough that I
feel far-flung, so that Ramones anthem remains my touchstone
Its not far too reach/We can hitch
a ride to Rockaway Beach/the sun
is out and I want some.
Thank you, Tommy, DeeDee,
Johnny, Joey for that and although
you are no longer physically with
us, Ill see you all at the Queens Museum on April 10. Hey! Ho! Lets Go!

The Lazer Speaks

FAITH

By Lou Pastina

Faith comes in many shapes,

sizes and colors. Some say
you must walk by faith, not
by sight; others say you dont
know you have it until it is the
only thing that you have left.
Faith can be a tricky thing
these days with so much at
our fingertips through the
Internet and advances in science.
The type of faith you see in
the movies is not the type of
thing that happens in real life.
But when God tells Moses in
the Ten Commandments to
lead his people, Moses does
it. He doesnt hesitate, although its good if you are built
like Charlton Heston and had
been an Egyptian general prior to leading a slave revolt. It
must have taken an unbelievable faith to realize that your
former slave driver was now
going to be your deliverer.

This past weekend was the

100-year anniversary of the
Easter Uprising in Dublin
that many credit with putting
Ireland on a path to shared
power in its own country.
The faith of those that occupied the General Post Office
on OConnell Street, in the
world, to realize that its attempt to win freedom was
hopeless, yet inspiring, was as
the Irish say, brilliant.
There are Christians in
Muslim countries that have
worshiped in peace for centuries but who find themselves
in the path of a holy war, yet
continue to worship because
they believe. Faith is strong,
but it does not cause one to
kill in the name of God. Thats
not faith, thats murder. Many
times in the past people have
changed their outer religions
to continue to survive, but
have kept their inner faith
strong. That is strength.

Recently I had the opportunity to attend a few funeral

masses. Not my favorite thing
to do, but I was inspired by
the shepherds who led the
proceedings. They did not
preach down from pulpits,
but waded out into the congregations and spoke plainly
and directly, and inspiringly.
Those moments give me faith
that religion is not dead, that
God is not dead, despite what
we read and see happening all
over the world.
Faith does not have to be
the big splashy movie thing,
it can be the simple gesture
done with love. For faith is
what sets us apart from the
rest of the animal kingdom.
We believe in goodness, we
believe in God, we believe in
one another. As Tug McGraw
once said, you gotta believe,
and I believe we do. And I have
faith that you do too. Shalom
Rockaway.

GET RID OF THE NO U-TURN

Dear Editor:
The 3-17 issue of The Rockaway
Times had a story entitled Its Back!
NO U-TURN Sign Returns.
I have to agree with the Rockaway
Times. WHY was this sign
reinstalled? After reading this story
I contacted the NYPD for accident
statistics at this location on Beach
113th Street and Beach Channel
Drive. In my opinion although
accidents have occurred here the
majority of them have nothing to do
with not having a NO U-TURN
sign. In 2015 there were ten accidents
at this location and only two of the
ten accidents were due to making a
U-TURN. In 2016 there have been
five accidents and NONE were due to
vehicles making a U-TURN.

As for vehicle occupant injuries, out

of all fifteen accidents there was one
injury and not due to a vehicle making
aU-TURN.Ialsoagreewiththereasons
which were in last weeks story and will
strongly say, the consequences can be
worse by leaving this sign intact. I will
be requesting that the Department of
Transportation (D.OT.) remove this
sign.

residents and children for money.

Another troubling trend is the
amount of residents from the Belle
Harbor Manor wandering around
the streets. These residents also
appear mentally ill, and its strange
that the staff allow them to walk
off of the property unsupervised.
With the summer months coming
and more visitors filling our streets
and businesses, I am calling on the
NYPD, elected officials such as Phil
Goldfeder and Eric Ulrich to stop
this degradation of the quality of life.
Rockaway is too beautiful a place
to have ruined. Parents shouldnt
be afraid to let their children go to
schoolyards or the pizza shops. Most
currently are, and this needs to be
addressed. The mere prescience of
police cars in front of the train station
does nothing to help the problem on
116. Where is the outreach from the
city to get these people off our streets
and into facilities where they can get
help / treatment? HELP!
Henry Teach

ROAMING MENTALLY ILL

Dear Editor,
While there are many great aspects
to living in Rockaway Beach, one
negative aspect seems to be getting
MUCH worse. As a lifelong resident,
I have come to expect some level
of homeless and mentally ill or
unstable people around town.
What I have noticed as a very
disturbing trend is how much
worse the level of homeless and
unstable individuals has become.
Beach 116th Street, Stop and Shop,
STRANGE, ISNT IT?
and now Beach 129th Street are
Dear Editor,

What is this, the mutual

Let me first say, Im sorry for the

sorry for her ticket. I just dont think
you should have put the officers

A small, somber ceremony on a

windy evening was held on Monday, March 28 to honor two members of the 100th Precinct who
lost their lives recently. About two
dozen people came out for a candlelight vigil for Captain Matthew
Hanrahan and Police Officer Vincent Harrison.
Captain Hanrahan, Executive
Officer for the 100th Precinct, was

Community Council President

Joe Young and a representative
from Assemblyman Phil Goldfeders office. A family from Harlem, including Calvin Hunt and
his children, Cameron and Olivia, came to the ceremony with a
banner saying, #BlueLivesMatter.
The children held the sign while
Calvin held a photo of Officer
Vincent Harrison. They left behind notes for the precinct and
candles.

On The Road With Rover And Rosa

FIRST STOP HONG KONG
By Wild Rover

Irish Rosa and I got on a

plane in NY on Tuesday night
and woke up in Hong Kong on
Thursday morning. I can only
conclude that over the Pacific
we ran into some kind of wormhole and traveled into the future. (Nets fans, good news: we
sign Durant in free agency. Act
surprised when it happens unless its in front of Knicks fans,
then act like a jackass).
The accompanying picture is
the view from our room overlooking the harbor. It makes
the decision to fly coach for
15 hours so we could treat
ourselves at the Ritz night
one seem like a very good decision. Its a little easier for
me to say that because I slept
about nine hours on the plane
whereas poor Irish Rosa slept
about nine minutes, but I
think upon arriving she would
agree that it was worth it. Our

room is on the 110th floor! You

read that right. There is a telescope in the exec lounge on
the 116th floor and you know
you are high up when the telescope is to look down on the
world.
Looking down, indeed.
I say, innocently, The people
look like ants from up here.
Irish Rosa (evil laugh): They
ARE ants!
Wild Rover: Whoa, easy
honey.
We are in the Hong Kong
equivalent of Jersey City - Kowloon - so we have sweeping
views up the whole harbor
over to Hong Kong Island. The
harbor is pretty amazing and
we cant wait to take a harbor
cruise to see it from the water. I think NYC can hang in
terms of pound for pound best
views financial center vs. financial center, but Hong Kong
has two to three sections that
equal NYCs financial district,

Heavenly View

so it definitely eclipses NYC

in overall scale. It is also as if
Rio merged with NYC because
like Rio, Hong Kong Island has
green mountains right behind
its skyline to frame it making it
that much more spectacular.
I believe the plan is to hike to
the top of its most famous, Victoria Peak, on Saturday so we
will be able to see it from the
other side as well.
We are just lounging today
and getting over jet lag, so we
are soaking in our one night at
the Ritz. As you might expect,

rooms on the 110th floor in the

most (or second most with
Singapore at its heels) expensive city in the world dont
come cheap, so we are only
here for a night before downgrading to the Mandarin Oriental in the city center, which
is like going from 21-year-old
scotch to 18-year-old scotch.
Then, we will downgrade further into the moonshine range
so we dont bankrupt ourselves three days into the trip.
Luckily the Ritz hooked us up
and let us check in at 7 am
without issue, so its like getting 2 nights for one. Tonight
we are going to a 2-Michelin
Star Cantonese restaurant on
the 103rd floor of the hotel.
Weve never eaten at a Michelin Star restaurant before and
definitely never eaten on the
103rd floor, so we are pretty
psyched for that.
More to follow as the journey
continues...

REMEMBERING GRUMPY

A veteran of the Korean War, his

Christian name was James DiTullio, but to his friends and extended family at the Broad Channel
VFW he was known simply as
Grumpy. I first met Grumpy
years ago on a Sunday afternoon
at the Broad Channel VFW where
he served as that organizations
bar chairman. Seated in the canteen, wearing a pair of reading
glasses with one lens conspicu-

ously missing and a baseball cap

with GRUMPY emblazoned
in large capital letters above the
bill, he greeted me with a firm
hand shake and a warm welcome
to his kingdom. He asked me
what branch of the service I had
served with and when I told him
that I had completed two enlistments in the United Sates Marine
Corps, he quickly replied, Two
enlistments with the green machine huh? You graduated from
just plain dumb to complete idiot
didnt you? I guess there is a good
reason USMC stands for Uncle
Sams Misguided Children. Right
then and there I knew I would like
this guy.
One warm summer weekend
as Vicky Amendolera, who tended bar at the VFW on Sundays,
kept our glasses topped with ice
cold draft beer I asked Grumpy
how he came to acquire his curmudgeonly nickname. I have no
idea! People have always told me
that Im grumpy but, for Christs
sake, its not like I have spent my
life walking around poking children in the eye. Well, not very

small ones, anyway. Before I

could say anything, Vicky started
laughing and said Dont believe
a word that this ill-tempered old
goat tells you! One look at his
glasses and it should be real clear
who gets poked in the eye!
I visited Grumpy at St. Johns
Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway some years back where he
was, as he put it, in for his annual tune up! During the course of
my visit our conversation turned
towards Grumpys service in Korea as a young soldier back in the
early 50s. I asked him why that
conflict was often referred to as
the Forgotten War. He sat up in
his bed and removed his reading
glasses and began cleaning its
one intact lens with a tissue and
said, Korea happened so soon
after WWII but did not involve as
many troops or combat deaths.
In WWII the entire country got
behind the war effort and supported the GIs but the early 50s
saw most Americans at home
enjoying the domestic benefits of
the post WWII boom. It was like
the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

today. Unless you have someone

you are related to or personally
know serving, most people didnt
pay too much attention. It is really a shame. Keep in mind though
that for those of us who served in
Korea, that war is anything but
forgotten.
As they will sound for all of us,
back on March 13, 2014, final taps
were sounded for Grumpy as his
82 year tour of duty on this earth
came to an honorable close. As
I end this column I realize just
how much I miss those Sundays
when Grumpy and I would sit
sipping our beers talking about
everything and nothing as Vicky
kept a close eye on both of us
making sure I was sent packing
as soon as I became bilingual and
started talking to my sneakers. I
truly enjoyed both the company
and friendship of this gentleman
and I appreciate all of you taking
a few minutes of your time to remember Grumpy along with me.
He may be gone but he is surely
not forgotten.

Recently a reader inquired

about what the average home
medicine closet should contain, how to dispose of old
medicines and how to keep
meds from kids and teens.
The average medicine
closet should contain in addition to toiletries and cosmetics a basic first aid kit.
Band-Aids of different sizes
and types, butterfly dressings, a roll of paper dressing
tape, sterile and non-sterile
4x4 gauze pads, an ace bandage or two and an arm sling
for starters. You might want
to add a thermometer, bottle of 325mg aspirin, alcohol
pads, non-sterile gloves, a
bottle of alcohol and a bottle of hydrogen peroxide
plus wound care cream like
Bacitracin or Aquaphor. Add
to that glycerin suppositories and Preparation H. If
there are small children in
the house a bottle of ipecac
(induces vomiting in cases
of accidental ingestion of
some substances). The back
of the closet door should
have the number of doctors who treat family members plus the police, fire and

poison control numbers.

If you choose to keep Tylenol keep it in a safe place as
an overdose of Tylenol can
be fatal. Prescription meds
should also be kept in that
safe place, preferably hidden and/or locked in households with kids or teens. Additional items may be kept
in the closet depending on
any illness or disease that
a household member may
have. Your doctor can help
you with that. Go through
the closet every now and
then to replace expired items
and replace bandages which
may fade and lose gripping
strength over time.
As far as disposing of unused or expired meds there
is no recommended method
as far as I know. Flush them
down the toilet and they
wind up in our waters or put
them in a zip-loc bag in the
trash and they wind up in a
landfill. My choice would be
landfill.
I hope that answers the
question.

What is a meme? Whats the

right way to pronounce it? Youve
probably seen hundreds of them,
not knowing what they are called.
According to the Merriam
Webster Dictionary it is an
idea, behavior, or style that
spreads from person to person within a culture. It is pronounced meem and not
mehm. The word was originally coined prior to the existence of the Internet by British
evolutionary biologist Richard
Dawkins in 1976.
Wikipedia states that a meme
acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices
that can be transmitted from one
mind to another through writing,
speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena with a
mimicked theme.

A Sit Down with State

Senator Sanders
By Katie McFadden

State Senator James Sanders Jr. of District 10 recently

stopped by the Rockaway Times
office to discuss recent accusations, his decision to step down
from a congressional run, issues affecting the community
and his endorsement of fellow
Sanders, Bernie on his presidential run.
Senator Sanders has long
been involved with politics. He
served as the councilman for
District 31 since 2002, until he
ran for New York State Senate, a
position he has held since January 2013.
Over the winter, Sanders announced that he would campaign against Gregory Meeks
for a seat in the 5th Congressional District. Earlier this
month, Sanders backed out
and said hes going to focus on
his reelection for state senator
for District 10 instead. When

asked about his decision to pull

out, Sanders insisted that many
comments be off the record.
He did say that the future state
of the New York State senate
could allow him to do more
for Rockaway. I believe were
about to see the senate democrats take over a majority of the
senate, which would open up
a world of possibilities. I have
some of the most progressive
legislation and Ive been hoping for this moment. It is conceivable that I would end up
as chair of a committee such
as Economic Development
and under those conditions, I
may be able to do more for the
Rockaways than in any other
position, he said.
Sanders decision to drop out
comes just weeks after a scathing report was published in the
New York Post, saying that the
state senator tried to bribe the

SENATOR SANDERS

operators of the urban farm,

Farm Rockaway, run by Culinary Kids. Marion Moses and
Malisa Rivera claim that Sanders offered them $1.7 million
in taxpayer money for their
operation and then demanded
a $250,000 kickback, while he
was on city council. The farmers turned down the alleged offer and they claim theyve been
blacklisted by government officials since. In January, Moses filed a civilian crime report
with the office of Manhattan US
Attorney Preet Bharara. Mike
Duvalle, a former staff member for the senator, told The
Post that in addition to this, the
senator is already bring probed
for his funding of the nonprofit
Margert Community Corp.
Sanders has denied the
claims and even offered to take
a polygraph test to prove his innocence, under the condition
that Moses take one as well.
Sanders spoke off the record
about the issues, but did say,
Were innocent and our day
will come. I suggested a polygraph and would love to do it
if the other side consents, he
said. The accusations are under investigation but Sanders
expects the outcome to be positive. Those who kept the faith
will be happy at the end, he
said. In the meantime, Sanders
is focusing on his reelection for
state senate. The primary will
be held in September. If Sanders wins the primary, hes confident that hell go on to win
the general election in November. Wherever I can make the
greatest impact to the people
of the Rockaways, thats where
I want to go and thats what I
want to do, he said.
Sanders has been keeping
busy, fighting against issues
that impact the peninsula.
Asked about the top three issues
in the Rockaways, Sanders said
economic development, education and ensuring that Sandy
funds are used properly for the
peninsula. He spoke of some of
the recent actions hes taken to
improve education, transportation and address concerns
about flood insurance.
As someone who served on
the school Board for District
27 for 10 years, education is an

THURSDAY, MARCH 31, 2016

important issue for the senator.
Sanders recently distributed
3,000 webcams to local school
districts. These cameras will
help with everything from
homework to communication
between teachers, security issues and helping young people get used to technology, he
said. Sanders wants schools
to go beyond STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering and
Math Education) and become
more involved with programs
like NASA. He has been in discussions with NASA to see how
schools can become more involved. We want to prepare
the youth of our district to
walk on Mars one day, he said.
Touching on specific school issues, such as the apparent bait
and switch of a middle school
coming to Arverne By the Sea
instead of a promised elementary school, Sanders said he
does not have a hand in such
decisions, but he is interested
in addressing the needs of the
neighborhood. A real solution
is to find out what the residents
need in that area. I intend to
meet with all sides, find out
from my neighbors what they
want, and bring the best ideas
to the Board of Ed so they can
come up with the best solution
for this community, he said.
As far as transportation
goes, Sanders says the current
transportation options prevent economic growth in the
community. He recently led a
demonstration against LIRR
for leaving Far Rockaway out of
its weekend discount program
called CityTicket. Touching on
bringing back the Rockaway
Beach Rail Line, Sanders says
he supports it and thinks its
possible to have both a train
service and a High Line type
park long this route. Were going to join those in the fight for
the Rail Line. Some are fighting for a nature path and some
are fighting for a train. Theres
enough land where you can do
both, he said. He brought up
the issue of Rockaways bridges going cashless. Theres a
concern that this would discriminate against poor people
who may not have credit cards
and would receive harsh penalties for not paying their bills,
he said. As for the ferry, Sanders says, we support the ferry.

They say the boats cannot go

under the bridge to get to the
east end, but these boats havent even been built yet. Why
dont we build them so they
can make it under the bridge?
We need to find a way for this
to work for everyone, he said.
Sanders added that hell be addressing transportation issues
more this spring.
As far as flood issues go, Sanders has been organizing several meetings to address local
street flooding and the rising
costs of flood insurance. We
realize this is a federal problem
and wed like to see the federal
government fight this harder,
but I must engage the state to
address these issues. We cannot wait any longer, he said. In
early March, he held a meeting
that included several state and
city agencies to address recent
street flooding. At 7 p.m. on
April 7 at Peninsula Library,
Sanders is hosting a workshop
to help residents deal with rising flood insurance premiums.
Sanders, a big proponent of
Minority and Women-Owned
Business Enterprises, (MWBE)

Page 31
has spent many years fighting
for fair MWBE laws. He recently proposed legislation that if
passed, would require local
governments to meet the statewide MWBE goal when awarding contracts funded by state
dollars. That figure is currently
close to 30 percent, the highest
in the nation.
While Sanders focuses on his
own election, he has also spoken about another big election
coming up. He endorses Bernie
Sanders for president, and not
just because they share a name.
Bernie is a man of his time
and his time is now. America
is waking up to the dangers of
economic inequality, climate
change, mass incarceration
and other issues that Bernie
has consistently stood for. I
support him because I support the future, he said. Sanders is actively trying to get the
presidential candidate to pay
Rockaway a visit. Im fighting
desperately to bring him to the
streets of southeast Queens and
Rockaway. Weve felt the Bern
out here and he needs to know
were responding.

Calling Out Community Board

From the minute I heard
about the plan to relocate a reform-school to the campus of
Beach Channel high school, I
was dumbfounded.
Most shocking, I heard the
news from Facebook. Thats
like finding out that your flight
was canceled after you board a
plane at the airport. Its extremely disappointing to the residents
who live near the campus in the
Beach 90s and Beach 100s to
hear such significant news by
way of rumors and Facebook
posts.
Whats more troubling is The
Dept. of Education (DOE) held
meetings and hearings on the
subject without telling anyone

Tuesday, April 5,
11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

who would be impacted! Or did

they? Hmmmmmmm!!!!!!
Now it has been reported,
once again by Facebook, that the
DOE has approved the Beach
Channel Location to house a reform-school.
You, along with me, must ask
yourself: HOW THE HELL DOES
THIS HAPPEN?!?!?
Arent there checks and balances to prevent these type of
disproportionate dangers to our
students anywhere on the peninsula and Broad Channel?
There is a clear answer. It is
yes!
Yes, our Committee for Education on CB 14 could have been
keeping the entire peninsula as

well as the entire Community

Board advised on the proposal
to relocate a reform school to the
Beach Channel campus on Beach
100th street, simply by holding
regular meetings and keeping in
contact with reps from the DOE.
Its the sole reason committees
exist, situations like this.
There is a real and clear reason
why the education committee
failed to do its job:
The committee, which deals
with education, has not met
since August of 2013. Thats
more than two school years ago!
Perhaps the co-chairs of this
committee of education and the
Chair for CB 14 believe that the
education system on the Peninsula and Broad Channel are running at Blue Ribbon standards.
Or perhaps the co-chairs are just
too busy within their own communities to do the job they have
been appointed to do by the
Chair of CB 14!
Some schools on the peninsula are definitely at Blue Ribbon levels, but too many are way
below! Either way, something
MUST change.
As Ive been ranting about for
the past several months, our

Community board is extremely

flawed in direct relation to the
fact that our current by-laws relegate our Community Board 14,
to just a reactive body.
Our by-laws in CB 14 are clear,
they say committees meet only
on an as-needed basis. This
means that committees will continually be a day late and a dollar
short in making our peninsula a
great place to get an education.
Especially if we are continually
reacting instead of taking action and looking forward. We
should be dealing with education through the windshield, not
through the rearview mirror.
My recommendation is the
Community Board appoint new
Co-Chairs to the Education Committee who want to take a proactive role in regard to education
here on the peninsula and in
Broad Channel. If we as a Community Board are dropping the
ball on something as simple as
the relocation of a reform school,
what else are we failing at?
My recommendation to anyone who has school age children: DEMAND BETTER FROM
CB 14. We need to take education to the next level.

Some Still Have Sandy Challenges

By Alex Berkowitz

Spring has finally arrived! The

flowering trees have begun to dazzle us with pastel blooms, while the
daffodils and crocuses remind us
that the bright flowers of summer
are just around the corner. Now
is the perfect time to start planning our gardens. That being said,
Sandy has changed a lot of the way

we do things around here, and gardening is no exception. Today Im

going to talk about how to replant
your front yards and gardens after

the damage from Hurricane Sandy.

Its been almost 3 1/2 years since
the Superstorm, and our community has come back stronger. However, one major part of the Rockaway
lifestyle that hasnt fully recovered is
our beautiful gardens. Our gardens
give us an oasis to relax in the summer, a place to grill and entertain
with friends and family, and a safe
space for our kids to play in. Its one
of the reasons that make Rockaway
such a special place to live.
In fact, inspired by my neighbors gardens, I took up gardening
as a hobby 20 years ago, and later
turned it into a career as a landscape designer. I owe my love of
gardens to this community.
Before we start to plant, its important to understand why most of
our plants failed. When the ocean

met the bay, it flooded everything

with a mix of salt water, pollutants,
chemicals, and sewage from the local waste treatment plant. This mix
saturated the soil, and all the plants
absorbed that from the roots to the
leaves. The soil eroded and left us
with mud, which became compact
infertile soil. On top of this, the salt
spray from the ocean hit plants that
arent salt tolerant. Our gardens
didnt have much of a chance.
But the good news is that theres
a clear way to restore our gardens.
For ornamental gardening like a
front yard, apply lime if you havent
already. It will get the remaining
salt out of the ground. Once were
ready to plant, we first loosen the
soil, and then we add in organic fertilizers like compost, nitrogen-based manures (chicken is
best), and peat moss to help retain
water in sandy soil. Depending on
your soil condition, you may need
other fertilizers to build it back. If
youre unsure about what your soil
needs, you can get it tested at Cornell Cooperative Extension, or you
can buy a kit to test at home.
Once our soil has all the nutrients
it needs, were ready to plant! At my
landscape design firm Sungold Design Group, my clients come to me
looking to make their gardens hurricane resistant. There are a couple

Page 35
of different shrubs out there that I
recommend that thrive in seaside
conditions. Hollywood junipers

make great anchors for your garden design. Certain hydrangeas,

hardier rose bushes, pines, flowering cherry trees, hostas, lilies, and
ornamental grasses all have better
chances of surviving salty conditions.
When planning your garden, ask
yourself how much of your landscaping do you want to be hurricane resistant, and how much do
you want for your personal pleasure. Its important to include plants
that you love, because after all is a
said and done, your garden is there
for your enjoyment.
Next week Ill discuss the secrets
to planting a successful fruit & vegetable garden.
Alex Berkowitz is the Founder
and Landscape Designer for Sungold Design Group, LLC a landscape design and installation firm
in NYC and Rockaway Beach.

Home Design Tips for Baby Boomers

There are about 76.4 million Baby
Boomers in the US, according to the
Population Reference Bureau. As
this population ages, it will become
important that features on their
houses promote safety, are easy-tomaintain, and last a long time.
Whether building from the
ground up or remodeling a current home, take aging-in-place
into consideration every step of
the way. Here are some great projects to consider with strong payback.
A Better Basement

When building a new home,

choose your foundation carefully. Not only is an uninsulated
basement a major source of heat
loss, but its throwing away potential space that can enhance
your life. A liveable basement
can be designated as a grandkid
zone, an at-home office or crafting workshop.
You can use a pre-cast insulated concrete foundation system,
such those from Superior Walls,
to create an energy-efficient
damp-proof basement. This

foundation will help reduce utility bills for long-term savings. Reinforced concrete walls create a
permanent barrier against water,
and pre-engineered access for
wiring or plumbing features are
a key element to whatever vision
you have for this subterranean
space.
First Floor Privacy

Many seniors opt to spend

more of their time at home on the
easy-to-navigate ground floor.
But dont compromise privacy in
pursuit of accessibility.
Privacy windows can alleviate
concerns you have about neighbors seeing you go about your
business. For example, those
from Hy-Lite are offered in numerous styles and designs, including opaque decorative glass,
acrylic block and true glass block
windows. Silkscreen glass designs
can complement the overall style
of the home. From your master
suite to your bathroom to the
main rooms of your home, avoid
prying eyes with this crucial component of stylish first floor living.

Safe, Comfortable Bathrooms

As mobility and coordination

decline, slips and falls can make
bathrooms a hazardous place.
Think of the years ahead by seeking out bathroom features that
are ADA compliant.
Taller toilets that are easier
to rise from, pedestal sinks that
allow wheelchairs and walkers
access, and walk-in tubs that
promote easy entries and exits,
are all bathroom features people
may need as they age, says Jean
Dimeo, a Certified Aging in Place
Specialist.
Brands like Mansfield Plumbing are accommodating the
boomer population by offering
selections of SmartHeight toi-

lets, pedestal, under counter and

wall mounted sinks. A popular
product, Restore walk-in tubs,
come with whirlpool and inline
heater options to sooth aching
muscles and joints. With many
high-design fixtures and fittings
available, a safe bathroom does
not need to be just a utilitarian
one.
Durable Roof

When choosing a roof for over

your home, seek out long-term
durability without compromising beauty. Slate and shake polymer roof products from brands
like DaVinci Roofscapes are
low-maintenance, offer lifetime
limited warranties, and come in a
variety of color options that have
the authentic look of natural materials. Impact- and fire- resistant, these hardworking roofs offer boomers both peace-of-mind
and long-term value.
By upgrading key home features during construction and
remodeling efforts, aging-inplace is not only possible, it can
be preferable. (StatePoint)

Cork it!!
By Artie Wallace

I thought it would be interesting to do an article on things

you can do with used wine
corks. There are so many things
you can do with corks that we
can only touch the surface of it
in this article. Used corks can
be found online at eBay and
Amazon for a reasonable price.
Most other materials can be
found at a local hardware or
craft store.
Chair molding (the molding going around a room at
chair height): A nice decorative
chair molding can cost $10.00
a foot or more. Making your
own chair molding is not only
unique, but can cost as little as
$5.00 a foot and is easy to do.
Start off with a round
molding. Nail it to the wall
(make sure it is level) at the de-

sired height with the flat edge

up. Take your wine corks, cut
them in half (the long way) and
glue them against the wall upright to the round molding.
Then place a second round
molding along the top of the
corks.
Wine tray: Start off with a
piece of flat wood ( inch ply-

wood works great), cut it to

the size of the wine tray you
would like. Using a molding
(flat or round molding) that
is slightly taller than the height
of a cut cork, frame the edge of
your flat wood. Cut your corks
in half the long way and glue
them to the surface of your flat
wood filling the framed area.
Get a piece of glass (make sure
it is not too thin) to cover the
top of the corked area of your
wine tray and secure in place
by gluing the edges to the
molding.
Hot plate: Cut your corks in
half (height not length). Glue

Directions:
Remove chicken skin, then butterfly
cut your breast. Hold a long shark
knife along the thicker part of the
breast, place your hand on top and
slice through the breast almost at
the end. Cut parallel to your cutting
board, and open the breast like a
book. Place saran wrap on a board,
add your breast spread open,
sandwich it in the saran wrap and
flatten using the flat side of a meat
mallet or underside of a saucepan.

them together using a hot glue
gun. You can make your hotplate square, round or into
whatever shape you desire.
Glue a ribbon around the outer
edge of your hotplate to make
it match your decor.
These are only three things
you can do with cork. An online search will reveal hundreds of more ideas with cork.
So next time you enjoy a bottle
of wine, dont throw the cork
away. You may be using it to
create something later.

Crack the eggs in the dish large enough

to fit chicken breast.
Season eggs with salt and pepper,
give a light mix. Chop the parsley
(keep a few of the sprigs for garnish)
and add to half to egg wash. Grate all
the Parmesan cheese to add to egg
wash, mix well.
Get your wine and chicken stock
portions ready. Add the plain flour to
a plate. Peel the garlic and place in a
garlic press or chop finely.
Add the olive oil and half the butter to
frying pan on moderate heat.
Coat the chicken with flour, shake
off excess. Dip the chicken in the egg
wash, make sure its totally covered
and place in hot oil. (When adding
to pan, put chicken away from you so
you dont get splattered).
Cook approximately 4 minutes each
side, depending on thickness.
Flip over once brown and cook the
other side.
Transfer chicken to hot plate and rest.
Using the same pan, on full heat, add
the white wine (alcohol can catch
fire so be careful, turn off heat first
if unsure). Add the crushed garlic.
Squeeze in half the lemon. Add the
chicken stock. Add the remainder of the
chopped parsley. Add the remainder
of the butter and reduce for 2 minutes
on full heat. Return the chicken to the
sauce and continue heating chicken on
medium heat. Serve the chicken, and
reduce the sauce until it looks a little
thicker (not too thick)

Dishing The Dirt

TRASH TALKING

By Valerie Dare

A doctors appointment on a
Thursday, at 11 a.m., gave me
good reason to take a full day
off from work. What to do with
the rest of my day? It was just
gorgeous out fairly warm
and sunny so Joe and I headed off to the Breezy Point tip.
Its Joes favorite place and I
can usually find a good duck
or bird to get excited about.
This time I made a new friend.
Rex the turtle and I strolled
along the shore, silently enjoying the sun and each others company. Ive said it before and Ill say it again we
are so fortunate to live in a
place surrounded by so much
natural beauty. The silence of
the dunes, the gentle roar of
the ocean, and sweet licks of
the bay against the shore
all here for us to experience
at our will. I am amazed every
time.
Theres something else that
amazes me and saddens me
and angers me and disgusts
me. The amount of garbage
along the shore. One of the
most beautiful, natural places in all of Rockaway in all
of the city! replete with garbage. Most of it is washed in
on the waves, brought to this
sandy sanctuary from some
far away land, but plenty of
it is left here by the people
who visit. And its not just this
place. Its every one of Rockaways treasures.
You cannot put the blame
solely on the folks who come
to spend the day. We, the residents, are just as guilty. Walk
down 116th Street any day of
the year. Its a constant pigsty.
I love to shop 116th. There are
so many good stores and so
many friendly store owners,
who will great you with smiles
and big a Hello. I feel for
you, my friends. You must be
on constant trash alert.
Id like to discuss one of the
most abundant and visible
trash items the single use
plastic bag. They are everywhere flying from trees like
a flag, attached to our new

REX

dune grass, resting comfortably along every roadway.

(Notice them along CrossBay
as you drive past the Wildlife
Refuge UGH.) Ive been on
Snowy Owl outings at Floyd
Bennett Field and have witnessed fellow birders become
so excited, thinking they spotted the owl, only to find it was
a white plastic bag.
That plastic bag you may
use only one time will linger on in this world long after youre gone from it. It will
continue polluting the land,
the oceans and rivers. It will
continue its negative impact
on wildlife and will continue
to cost taxpayers money they
really dont have. If you think
you are not paying extra at the
grocery checkout for these
bags, think again. The manufacturer doesnt give them
away for free and Stop and
Shop passes that price along
to you. There is a cost associated with disposing of these
bags in the landfill, which is
again passed on to you. What
about recycling these bags,
you say? They are supposed to
be 100% recyclable yet the industry has not devised a way
to effectively recycle them.
The lightweight, filmy sacks
clog the machinery and end
up being carted off to landfills as recycling residue
more often than not. The bags
cannot be recycled endlessly,
either, contrary to common
belief, but can only be down-

cycled one time into some

product other than bags.
Ireland, back in 2002, became the first country to do
something about the scourge
of plastic bags. A plague of
plastic grocery bags papered
Irelands coveted green countryside, marring the Emerald
Islands reputation for physical beauty. Irelands lawmakers and voters decided
they had enough and passed
a plastic bag tax of 15 euro
cents (raised to 22 euro cents
in 2007, the equivalent of 30
cents U.S.)
The
rationale for the tax was this: Plastic bags have been viewed as
free by consumers, when
in fact they cost quite a bit
in terms of the burden they
impose on the environment
and on taxpayers, who have
to foot the bill for cleanup,
landfills and pollution. The
tax simply reflected the true
costs of the bags. It ended a
kind of plastic welfare that
had acted as a market force
that favored waste and unproductive overconsumption.
The tax proceeds went to Irelands environmental agency.
This tax had an immediate
and profound impact on the
behavior of Irish consumers.
They simply didnt want to
pay for a bag that had previously cost them nothing. Plastic use dropped more than 90
percent in a matter of weeks.
Resuable bags became fashionable and plastic bags were

looked at as a social gaffe.

The tax was never much of
a burden because relatively
few people paid it. They simply avoided the bags. At first,
grocery chains opposed the
levy, but soon changed their
positions. They came to realize this was good for business!
Feargal Quinn, the founder
Irelands top grocery chain,
was quoted as saying, I spent
many months arguing against
this tax. But I have become a
big enthusiast Now were
saving the environment, were
reducing litter and, since
were not paying for bags, it
ultimately saves money for us,
and that reduces the price of
food for our consumers. Just
plain old common sense.
Many countries around the
world have followed Irelands
example as well as some U.S.
states. New York, though,
doesnt seem to get it yet, except for the Hamptons. Theyve
had outright bans in place going back to 2011. A typical New
Yorker goes through 620 single
use plastic bags a year. In a year,
New York City as a whole manages to go through 5.2 Billion
single use bags. Thats about
10,000 bags a minute the vast
majority ending up as landfill.
New York spends $10 million
a year to transport these bags
to out of state landfills. Boy, I
could think of so many things
we New Yorkers could use that
10 mill for Im sure you can,
too.
If you insist on using plastic
bags, even though reusables
are inexpensive to purchase
and, more often than not, free,
please knot your bags before
throwing them out. This gives
them some weight so they are
less likely to fly around.

Random Notes on This and That

By Brice Bernfeld

Endorphins
You know how they always
say you feel great after exercising? I always thought that was
a ruse because you always
feel horrible exercising and
you need some reason to do it
and get through it. But... I am
learning that there is a really
something to the claim. Its
not only psychological but
there are real physical explanations for this phenomenon
and the center around endorphins.
The principal function of
endorphins is to inhibit the
transmission of pain signals;
they may also produce a feeling of euphoria very similar
to that produced by other
opioids.
Endorphins are produced
by the central nervous system. They consist of two
parts: endo- and -orphin;
these are short forms of the
words endogenous and morphine, Intended to mean a
morphine-like
substance
originating from within the
body.
So, Im in the middle of
my step aerobics. (I have increased the amount I can do
without collapsing from 20
steps four weeks ago to 200
my last session). The burn is
starting to increase when I hit
the 35 step mark. My pituitary
gland senses this and jumps
into action and releases a
load of endos to ease my pain.
They work.... But the best part
is that they keep working after the exercise and pain end.
So now there is no discomfort
but the stuff is racing through
my body and giving me a true
natural high. Very, very cool
this body of ours!

Aquafaba

What do vegans and people

with allergies to eggs do when
they come to a point in a recipe that says: Beat three egg
whites into they form peaks
Well... Nothing until 2014

when a chef in France discovered this amazing thing. He

discovered an amazing use
for Aquafaba!!
Aquafaba is the name for
the water in which legume
seeds such as chickpeas have
been cooked. (Its that somewhat thick liquid that you
always thought you had to
throw out when you open any
can of beans... NOT BAKED
BEANS!)
Due to its ability to mimic functional properties of
egg whites, aquafaba may be
used as a direct replacement
for egg whites in foods.
Who would have thought
that the next big thing to
sweep across the vegan nation would have been something as simple - and as icky
- as the brine from legumes?
It might have something to do
with the fact that not only is
this liquid shaping out to be
the perfect egg replacer, its
also one of the cheapest and
most accessible replacers
around - all you need is a can,
or packet, of legumes, chickpeas being the bean du jour.
Using juice straight from
the can is the easiest method, though slowly cooking
dried beans in water for a few
hours until the water turns to
aquafaba will give you similar results. Even water from
packaged tofu and peas is
aquafaba!
Remember, if your beanjuice is too watery, reduce
it until it turns the same
consistency as egg whites.
If using aquafaba to make
fluffy things like meringue
and light cakes, remember
to whisk it first until it turns
white and foamy, then fold it
into the batter using a metal spoon to keep those bubbles from popping. Use three
tablespoons of aquafaba per
egg.
Hope you all had a great
Easter and will be having a
great Passover. I trust you went
easy on the chocolate bunnies
and will not be carb loading on
too much Matzo!

Travel Adventures: South Africa

By Katie McFadden

I had the adventure of a lifetime earlier this month when

I went to South Africa. Before
going, many asked why? After all, South Africa isnt your
typical vacation spot. The
deal was just too good to pass
up. For just $1,499 a person, I
snagged an 8-day trip through
SmarTours
that
included
flights, hotel stays in Cape
Town and near Kruger National Park, daily breakfast, two
dinners and a safari. It was a
no brainer. I recruited my college roommate, Sarah Ryck,
and we set out on the adventure together.

Also, it was on my bucket

list. I have always wanted to
go on an African safari. At 27,
some may say Im too young
to have a bucket list. But any
moment can be your last, so I
try to make the most of every
moment and I believe the best
time to travel is while youre
young. Also, travel is one of the
best ways to grow and learn.
Had I not gone to South Africa, I would still be immune to
Hepatitis B, susceptible Tetanus and I wouldnt know how
painful (and expensive) those
immunizations are. Had I not
gone to South Africa, I wouldnt
know that I can survive a 16hour flight, twice. Those simple
obstacles made everything else
I learned worth it.

teaubriand and filet mignon,

along with two appetizers and
some Belgian beers. The total:
$40.
Had I not gone to South Africa, I wouldnt know how seasick I could get. One of things
I was most looking forward
to was cage diving with great
white sharks. Unfortunately, I
spent four hours throwing up
over the side of the boat, but
Id like to think I made some
great chum. We had sharks
surrounding the boat all day. I
composed myself long enough
to put on the wetsuit and get
into the cage for 20 minutes.
Despite not feeling well, that
brief moment in the cage, just

Had I not gone to South Africa, I wouldnt have known

about the breathtaking views
from being 3,562-feet above
sea level on South Africas biggest landmark, Table Mountain. The flat-topped mountain provided scenic views of
Cape Town below, the Atlantic
Ocean and clouds at eye level.
Had I not gone to South Africa, I wouldnt have known
how inexpensive everything
was. Sarah and I visited a popular tourist spot called the
V&A Waterfront, which featured many shops and restaurants. We settled on a Belgian
restaurant that offered picturesque waterfront views of
Table Mountain. We ordered
fancy cuts of meat such as cha-

feet away from a 10-foot fish

that could kill me if it wanted
to, was incredible.
Had I not gone to South Africa, I wouldnt know how beautiful the coast of Cape Town
is. We spent a full day driving
around the peninsula, looking at water that was too blue
to put into words. We stopped
at the Cape of Good Hope, the
most southwestern tip of Africa. The wind that day was incredible. We werent even on
the safari yet, but we saw plenty of wildlife. We took a boat
out to something called Seal
Island, which is home to hundreds of Cape Fur Seals. We
drove out to Boulder Beach,
which is home to a massive
colony of African penguins.
We also spotted an ostrich and
antelope along the way and
finished the day off with a visit
to the Kirstenboch Botanical
Garden.
Of course, one of the main
highlights of the trip was the
safari. We flew back up toward
Johannesburg and then drove
about six hours east to our hotel, which was about 40 minutes outside of Kruger National Park, where the safari was.
I had the opportunity to go on
an evening safari the night we
arrived and got a glimpse of

several animals. We also made

a stop at sunset to take photos
and our guide served us delicious South African liquor.
Had I not gone to South Africa, I would have never been
able to learn what the Big

Five are and spot them. The

Big Five are the most dangerous animals to hunt. They are
the lion, the white rhino, the
Cape buffalo, the elephant
and the more elusive leopard.
We had a perfect day and were

able to spot not only the Big

Five, but also dozens of other
animals like giraffes, zebras,
hyenas, African wild dogs,
warthogs, hippos, and more.
Had I not gone to South Africa, I wouldnt know what its
like to fight a thieving monkey.
During a bathroom break on
the safari, we decided to leave
our belongings in the vehicle.
At this location, we found several adorable Ververt monkeys
playing along the trees. Little

did we know, they were distracting us. When we returned

to the vehicle, their buddies
were going through our bags.
A monkey grabbed my portable phone charger from my
seat and I had an intense tugof-war and screaming match
with the animal. Luckily, it
gave in.
South Africa taught me a
lot. It was a truly unforgettable trip and I recommend it to
anyone.

Women of Rockaway:
Leyla and Ximena Yrala of Chicks to Go

Leyla Yrala, Ximena Yrala and Leylas daughter, Illari.

By Katie McFadden

Who runs the peninsula?

Women. A large number of local businesses and organizations are owned and operated
by females, or female co-owners. And they deserve recognition. As part of an ongoing
series, the Rockaway Times is
profiling local female entrepreneurs each week. This week is
Leyla and Ximena Yrala, owners of Chicks to Go.
Leyla and Ximena Yrala recently celebrated their first
anniversary of introducing
Rockaway to Peruvian chicken with Chicks to Go. Chicks
to Go offers a bit of Peruvian
tradition, Leyla Yrala said.
We call this kind of place a
pollera, or a place that only
sells rotisserie chicken. Its
something you can find on
every corner in Peru. Chicks
to Go, on the corner of Beach
97th and Rockaway Beach
Boulevard, serves up rotisserie
chicken, with sides like rice
and beans, French fries, yucca fries or plantains, smaller
treats like empanadas and salchipapas, and occasional specials like pollo saltado, (chicken stir-fry), chaufa (fried rice
or quinoa) and more.

The Yrala sisters know the

taste of Peru. After all, theyre
originally from Lima. Leyla
says theyve lived in Rockaway
for more than 10 years. When
we got to New York, we first
lived in Forest Hills, but we
had grown up by the beach in
Peru, so we quickly found that
the closest beach was Rockaway. When we came here for
the first time, we saw condos
on Beach 101st that were just
built. We fell in love with the
beach and the house, so we
rented and wound up staying
here forever, Leyla said.
The ladies both had experience working in Peruvian restaurants around the city since
they arrived in New York. Leyla worked at a restaurant in
Brooklyn and Ximena worked
in Manhattan. In 2014, they
took a chance on their own
place in their own neighborhood. Everyone wants to be
their own boss, Leyla said.
The Yrala sisters say food is
a big aspect of Peruvian culture and they wanted to share
it with their neighborhood.
Food is something you grow
with. Its the main thing in
Peru. Peru has been nominated as the top culinary destination in the world four years in a
row. Its a big thing over there.

Were not good at soccer, but

were good at food, she said.
They started working with
the Beach 97th boardwalk
concession La Fruteria and
started La Cevichera, where
they sold ceviche, a Peruvian
raw fish dish. It was one of the
first summers after Sandy, so it
was slow, but people liked it,
Leyla said. The next summer,
the ladies were offered their
own concession space for La
Cevichera, which theyve operated during the summer seasons since. Leyla says ceviche
is great for the summer, but
they were looking to do more.
Ceviche is delicious, but not
everyone is into raw fish. In
Peru, we relate ceviche to the
summer. It goes well with beer
and the beach. Chicken is all
year, she said.
Seeing a lack of food choices
in an early post-Sandy Rockaway, the sisters wanted to add
something new to the mix.
As locals, we realized Rockaway was a good place for a
business to grow. There werent many options for food.
Theres much more now than
a few years ago. We decided
to open a chicken place because chicken is something
that many people like and
eat and its big in Peru Leyla
said.
On March 12, 2015, the sisters opened the doors to the
corner takeout restaurant,
Chicks to Go. Making a recipe
that theyve learned through
their experience working
alongside chefs in other Peruvian restaurants, the sisters introduced the peninsula
to mouthwatering Peruvian
chicken last spring. We like
to share our culture with the
community. We live here,
we love Rockaway. I think
our food is a good thing and
its affordable, Leyla said.
Chicks to Go runs on a small
operation, with only one table available to dine in, but
the sisters like the small aspect and having their chicks
made to go. We know what
its like to work in big restau-

rants and it can be stressful. A

takeout place is easier and the
size of the space is perfect for
us, Leyla said.
The sisters understand that
the first few years of a business
can be the hardest, but they
have the support of family to
get them through. The sisters
work together, alongside a
small staff, which grows larger
in the busier summer season.
One of their important helpers is Illari, Leylas daughter.
She is often seen at the store,
lending a helping hand. I
think everyone knows my
daughter. Shes always here
taking orders and helping,
Leyla said.
Despite the typical struggles of opening a new business and dealing with the
slow winter season, Leyla
says the first year has been
a success. Its a lot of work,
but I enjoy everything. We
cant complain at all. Theres
been a lot of support from
the community. The people
are great. We love when they
come back and tell us that the
food is good, she said. Nice
reviews also help. Last summer, Chicks to Go got a raving
review in the New York Times,
which helped boost business.
For those looking to open
their own business, Leyla says,
go for it. However, she advises to know the business youre
getting into. If you want to
open a nail salon, you should
know how to do nails yourself. If youre going to open a
restaurant, know how to cook.
Its difficult when you have to
rely on someone else, so make
sure you know what youre doing. Thats the most important
thing.
Chicks to Go, located at 97-02
Rockaway Beach Boulevard, is
open seven days a week from
11 a.m. to 10 p.m. They can
be reached by phone at (718)
945-4100 and offer delivery
and online ordering through
sites like Seamless. More information can be found at www.

Foam-Top Frenzy
Foam tops have become
ubiquitous world-wide as
families buy them for their
kids to learn on, surf schools
use them for giving lessons,
all the while knowing that
if they get hit by the board,
hopefully not much harm will
result. But these days with the
performance level of foamies
improving, even veteran surfers are snatching them up at
record rates. Then you throw
in the fact that Costco sells
the WaveStorm brand for $99,
now you have a perfect storm
of foamies being everywhere.
And heres a little fact for
you, the WaveStorm foamie
is the most owned surfboard
in America, selling over half a
million annually.
So in walks Locals Surf
School with a great idea, the
1st Annual Foam-Top Frenzy.
This coming Saturday, Locals Surf School will be hosting the 1st Annual Foam-Top
Frenzy on Beach 90th St in
Rockaway. The event will be
supported by RedBull with an
after-party at the Rockaway
Beach Surf Club.
The premise of the event is

process, the package includes provisions aimed
at cutting red tape often
faced by families. Under bill
A.2946, the courts would be
required to provide for expedited judicial review for
claims relating to damages
occurring within State Disaster Emergency areas declared by the governor. Bill
A.4458 establishes a set time
period insurance providers

No real Surfboards. Essentially, anyone with a FoamTop or alternative craft can

enter. Awards will be given for
Best Wave, Best wipeout,
and Best Alternative Craft.
There is already a lot of support for the event and it looks
like we will have great weather
and waves.

would have to let policyholders know if their claim would

be accepted or rejected. Two
other bills direct the states
top financial regulator to
simplify complicated insurance policy language. Each
bill must now be approved by
the Senate, where the legislation currently awaits committee review. The passage
of these disaster bills will cut
down on abuse and protect
families when they need help
the most, Goldfeder said.
