As a postgraduate student, I attended courses in Hydrology, Water Resources Metrics,
Environmental Engineering, Accounting and Management, Contract and Construction Law. These
enhanced the knowledge gained at undergraduate level and also added to my knowledge base
with respect to hydrological statistics, watershed modelling, model calibration, use of various
instrumentation in water resources.
E
While employed with FRP Gratings & Composites Ltd, I was not always required to actively use the
skills learnt during undergraduate and post graduate studies, but I increased my knowledge in the
use of fiberglass reinforced plastic (frp) and adhesives in structural applications. I learnt shop
fabrication of ladders, piping and fittings, tanks, handrails and stairs using frp structurals and raw
materials. I produced shop drawings in AutoCad and carried out fabrication at the workshop. I
learnt how to size various structurals (I beams, channel in frp) based on loadings and material
properties. I also learnt the skill of hdpe fusion welding and operation of the equipment, and was
involved in the fabrication of a machine based on the principle of operation (Appendix A1).
I also prepared calculations for determining design flows for wastewater treatment plants and sized
units based on these calculations for project proposals (Appendix A1).

E
While working at FRP Gratings and Composites Ltd, I was involved in product development to
solve issues encountered in engineering practice. One such instance was the development of a
fiberglass electrical pullbox for use in construction. The established method of practice is that
electrical pullboxes are made of concrete block work with PVC inserts to allow for cables. However,
this method has the issue of water entering the pullbox and shorting off the electricals, resulting in
increased costs for repair. As such, it was determined that we should attempt to produce a
fiberglass electrical pullbox which would be leak proof and so eliminate the issue of shorting off of
electricals. I produced shop drawings for a prototype of the pullbox and supervised the fabrication
of the unit for demonstration to prospective clients (see Schematic of Electrical Pullbox in Appendix
B1).
On another project, we were contracted to fabricate 24" HDPE pipe spools for underground
drainage by HDPE fusion welding. However, the fusion equipment which the company purchased
would not have arrived in time to coincide with our start date so we (myself, Mechanical Engineer,
Chief Engineer and work crew) designed and built a machine, based on the principle of operation
of the HDPE fusion equipment, to be used in the interim. The machine was designed to be
manually operated and used a hydraulic jack to apply pressure during heating and fusion of the
piping (see image of Fusion Equipment in use in Appendix B1).

While employed with FRP Gratings & Composites Ltd, I was involved in the fabrication and
installation of a 3" frp firewater pipeline for Petrotrin's New Acid Plant. When the system was put
into operation and pressured up, a leak developed at one of the joints. I, along with one member of
the crew, was required to assess the leak and repair it. Upon investigation, I realized that the leak
had occurred due to a space at the joint which could not have been sealed internally using
adhesive. To resolve the issue, we removed the existing fiberglass weld, sealed the joint externally
using putty and installed a new fiberglass weld. I advised the plant operators to allow the weld to
cure properly and to apply pressure to the line 12 hours after completion of the repair. I contacted
the client the next day to ensure that the repair was able to withstand design pressures and was
informed that no further problems had occurred.
I also worked on another project which involved the fabrication of frp headers, troughs and feed
pipes for Petrotrin's Acid Plant Cooling Tower. However, when the headers and troughs were
installed, they were not properly positioned inside the vessel and as a result, the headers were not
aligned with the flanged elbows of the feed pipes. The client insisted that we perform the
adjustments on site which we attempted to do but our efforts proved futile. As such, I took the
flanged elbows back to the workshop where I directed the crew on the repairs to be made. After the
items had been reworked, I returned them to the client for installation. The client found the items
acceptable and had no further issues with the installation (see invoices for completed works in
Appendix B3).

During my employment with FRP, I was part of a team responsible for the fabrication of a 3"
fiberglass fire water piping system at Petrotrin's Acid Plant. I carried out the measurement and
marking of piping and fittings for cutting and fabrication. I supervised the fiberglass welding
process to ensure that quality was not compromised- adhesives were mixed using correct
proportions, fiberglass mat and woving were "wetted out" using sufficient epoxy to ensure strength
of the weld, and that sufficient layers of mat and woving were used (in correct combination) to
ensure weld thickness.
I was also responsible for the fabrication of a 36" diameter, 1 1/2" thick fiberglass blind flange. I
was responsible for ensuring adhesives were mixed using correct proportions, fiberglass mat and
woving were "wetted out" using sufficient epoxy, and that sufficient layers of mat and woving were
used (in correct combination) to achieve the required flange thickness. I was also responsible for

were some issues which required resolution. In one such instance, our team was not provided the
required fittings, as specified by the drawings for construction, for completion of a particular spool. I
notified my superior of the issue via telephone and we were able to propose an engineered
solution, using the fittings which were available. We met with the site's Chief Engineer and
representatives of the Main Contractor with whom our company was contracted, presented our
idea and had it approved. The approved changes were also documented on the Daily Report and
copied to the Client Representative and the Main Contractor (see Daily Report in Appendix C5).
While at the NGC Caroni Loading Facility, I was managing the team responsible for the supply and
installation of high load drain grates and manhole covers. I was responsible for measuring all

During my time at FRP Gratings & Composites, I was able to develop good working relationships
with colleagues at all levels in the organization- directors, office administration and work crew- as
well as clients. I was aware of my role in the company (Junior Engineer then Assistant Chief
Engineer) and I strived to achieve high results in all activities delegated to me and to promote the
proper functioning of the organization. I was also aware of my professional responsibility toward
my colleagues and clients and ensured that I always delivered best performance to all parties.
Even after having left the company, I have maintained good relationships with all persons.
With respect to clients, I always made myself available for site visits at their convenience and
regularly consulted with them (via phone or correspondence) to discuss changes/concerns/general
follow up on projects that I would be executing on behalf of the company. Whenever clients brought
concerns/problems to my attention, I would work to resolve them in the shortest possible time and
to the client's satisfaction, to ensure that the client could proceed with their work.
With respect to administrative staff and the company's managing director (also Chief Engineer), I
was efficient in carrying out my duties, including daily consultation with the MD on various ongoing
projects, upcoming work and potential jobs for the company, prompt delivery of times to the Office
Manager for preparation of weekly wages, and ensuring that the Office Manager was regularly
made aware of completed jobs to update and follow up on company receivables.
With respect to the work crew of three for which I was responsible, I tried to encourage healthy
work relationships within the group. I sought to advise, correct and guide in all workshop activities,
but also sought advice from the crew, as I knew that some of them were well experienced in
fabrication and would have ideas on how best to carry out a task. I always invited ideas from the
crew which allowed for efficient execution of tasks and also enhanced my learning experience.

While employed at FRP Gratings & Composites Ltd, I was, on two separate occasions, faced with
the issue of bribery where our company was asked to give payoffs to the representatives of
prospective clients in order to secure specific projects. It was my first time experiencing these
practices which are considered a norm, locally, in the industry. Given my personal beliefs I told my
employer and MD of the company that while the jobs would do us well in the slow economic times,
this was not the way to achieve and the company should not allow the development of such
practice.
During my time with FRP Gratings & Composites Ltd, I was also involved in widening the
company's scope, in terms of the products and services which it provided. One innovative product
which the company chose to market was fiberglass manhole covers, manufactured to the
standards of their steel counterparts. This product was chosen to be promoted as it solved the
local problem of theft of the steel covers by scrap metal dealers, and prior to my resignation,
several clients had shown interest in purchasing the product (see brochure for fiberglass manhole
cover in Appendix E1).
While there, I was also involved in the company's mission to promote the use of renewable energy
locally given the government's promise of a 150% tax return on solar panels and wind turbines. As
such, the company's MD and myself developed the draft Proposed Interconnection Documents for
Trinidad & Tobago and placed them on the company's website for discussion and comment by
stakeholders. This was an effort to take a proactive approach to fast tracking grid
interconnection by encouraging all stakeholders to combine efforts in developing the
governing legislation, rules and procedures to yield positive benefits to our society and the
environment (see sample pages from draft Proposed Interconnection Documents in Appendix E1).

While working at FRP Gratings and Composites Ltd I was introduced to the specialised skill of
fabrication using fiberglass reinforced plastic products as well as raw materials- fiberglass mat and
woving, epoxies, resin, acetone. This skill had particular hazards associated with it, such as skin
irritation and dust inhalation due to the dust generated when cutting and grinding frp products and
burns to clothes and skin from chemicals and adhesives being used.
By being aware of the hazards associated with the job, I was able to instruct the work crew for which
I was responsible on the potential hazards and as such demanded that they wear the necessary
protective equipment which the company provided at all times. I encouraged the crew to inform me
of when consumables required for their safety needed to be restocked (latex gloves, dust masks) so
that I could obtain them in timely manner. I particularly encouraged good housekeeping in and
around the workshop to minimize the potential for accidents to occur. When on job sites, I ensured
that the crew and I always had the required PPE and used it when carrying out tasks, in addition to
ensuring safe practices during execution of tasks.

While working at FRP Gratings & Composites Ltd, I was introduced to a new and highly specialised
skill in engineering- fabrication of fiberglass reinforced plastic- which was apart from anything I had
learnt during my undergraduate program. As such, I was required to develop my knowledge of the
procedures and techniques involved, which I was able to do through reading publications focused
on fiberglass fabrication and standards for fabrication, as well as through practical training.
Structural fiberglasss and composite products are predominantly used in the petro-chemical
industry. As such, I obtained my PLEA Passport as part of my Health, Safety, Environment and
Quality training in order to work as a contractor at those companies within the energy/oil and gas
and industrial sector. I also obtained site specific orientations for Methanex Trinidad, PCS Nitrogen
Trinidad and Petrotrin (see photograph in Appendix E4).
Also, FRP Gratings and Composites Ltd was also focused on promoting the use of renewable
energy locally- both solar and wind. In keeping with this, I attended the first National Conference
for Environmental Management at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus and I
attended the Port of Spain Session of the National Energy Policy Consultations hosted by the
Ministry of Energy in 2011.
