CHAPTER 3: Convection Heat Transfer 2015

TUTORIAL 2
1. An aluminum soda can of 150 mm in length and 60 mm in diameter is
placed horizontally inside a refrigerator compartment that maintains a
temperature of 4oC. if the surface temperature of the can is 36 oC,
estimate heat transfer from the can. Neglect the heat transfer from the
ends of the can.
2. A 12 m long section of a 5 cm diameter horizontal hot water pipe
passes through a large room whose temperature is 27 oC. If the
temperature of the outer surface of the pipe is 73 oC, determine the
rate of heat loss from the pipe by natural convection.
3. A can of engine oil with a length of 150 mm and a diameter of 100 mm
is placed vertically in the trunk of a car. In a hot summer day, the
temperature in the trunk is 43 oC. If the surface temperature of the can
is 17oC, determine heat transfer rate from the can surface. Neglect the
heat transfer from the ends of the can.
4. A

long

10-cm-diameter

steam

pipe

whose

external

surface

temperature is 110 0C passes through some open area that is not

protected against the winds. Determine the rate of heat loss from the
pipe per unit of its length when the air is at 1 atm pressure and 10 0C
and the wind is blowing across the pipe at a velocity of 8 m/s.
5. During a cold winter day, wind at 42 km/h is blowing parallel to a 6 m
high and 10 m long wall of a house. If the air outside is at 5 oC and the
surface temperature of the wall is 12 oC, determine the rate of heat loss
from that wall by convection. Calculate the rate of heat loss if the wing
velocity was doubled.
6. Hot CO2 exhaust gas at 1 atm is being cooled by flat plates. The gas at
220oC flows in parallel over the upper and lower surfaces of a 1.5 m
long flat plate at a velocity of 3 m/s. if the flat plate surface
temperature is maintained at 80oC, determine

CHAPTER 3: Convection Heat Transfer 2015

a. The local convection heat transfer coefficient heat transfer
coefficient at 1 m from the leading edge,
b. The average convection heat transfer coefficient heat transfer
over the entire plate
c. The total heat flux transfer to the plate
7. An array of power transistors, dissipating 5 W of power each, are to be
cooled by mounting them on a 25 cm x 25 cm square aluminum plate
and blowing air at 35oC over the plate with a fan at a velocity of 4 m/s.
The average temperature of the plate is not to exceed 65 oC. Assuming
the heat transfer from the back side of the plate to be negligible and
disregarding radiation, determine the number of transistors that can be
placed on this plate.
8. The components of an electronic system are located in a 1.5 m long
horizontal duct whose cross section is 20 cm x 20 cm. the components
in the duct are not allowed to come into direct contact with cooling air
and thus are cooled by air at 30 oC flowing over the duct with a velocity
of 200 m/min. If the surface temperature of the duct is not to exceed
65oC, determine the total power rating of the electronic devices that
can be mounted into the duct.
9. A long 12 cm diameter steam pipe whose external surface temperature
is 90oC passes through some open area that is not protected against
the winds. Determine the rate of heat loss from the pipe per unit of its
length when the air is 1 atm pressure and 7 oC and the wind is blowing
across the pipe at a velocity of 65 km/h.

10.A 2.2 m diameter spherical tank of negligible thickness contains iced

water at 0oC. Air at 25oC flows over the tank with a velocity of 6 m/s.
Determine the rate of heat transfer to the tank and rate at which ice
melts. The heat of fusion of water at 0oC is 333.7 kJ/Kg.
