Photodesign
Description: I was able to demonstrate good photography and image editing skills. I was able to incorporate color into a poster layout with an original photo.
Process (Programs, Tools, and Skills: I first able to formulate my plan by choosing a color scheme
from the Visual FOCUS book for my layout, I decided on Complementary. I captured a quality photo
with good light on a snowy day, sharp focus, and nice composition. I used a Nikon D3200 camera
borrowed from a friend. I then brought the photo into Photoshop and used these specific editing
techniques: levels, sharpness, saturation, and color balance. After I designed an 8.511 layout that
including my photo, text, and repeating design elements. I incorporated my color scheme title, color
swatches, and color names into my design. I used the eyedropper tool and adjusted the color in the
color picker to match a little more accurately. I created text boxes and typed in a quote written from an
unknown person. I used a repeating element and learned how to change the transparency of it.
Message: I wanted to make an appealing poster for people who need a motivational quote. I wanted to
incorporate an attractive fun color scheme to demonstrate my understanding of the color wheel.
Audience: Self-motivation quote for anyone looking to find who he or she really are and do the things
they love.
Top Thing Learned: I learned how to plan and prepare for a photo shoot before taking a photo. I
learned how to pick a color scheme that coordinates with the photo and I also learned how to change
the levels, vibrancies, and saturation of a photo in Photoshop.
Color scheme: Complimentary
Color names: Blue and Orange

Logos
Description: Logo for a garden
Process:
This was really fun to create a logo in Illustrator. I got to design a few different drafts and ideas, after; I
took a vote on which was the best. I chose the one I liked best and which was voted on most to refine.
I refined the typography and font choices, I also changed the name to include Wedding and Garden
venue below the name of the garden. I used the shape tool to make the flower. Using the Polygon
Tool, I drew an eight-sided figure. With my octagon selected, I went to Effect > Distort & Transform >
Pucker & Bloat. Moved the slider to 76% Bloat. I then hit Expand under Object and my daisy became
its very own shape. I used the Ellipse Tool to draw a circle for the flowers center. For the stem, I drew
a long, narrow rectangle, selected the stem and went to Effect > Warp > Flag. In the Warp Options, I
selected Vertical and pushed the Bend slider to 50%. Once I hit okay, I made sure to Expand under
Object and place it under the flowers petals in the Layers panel.

Brochure
Description:
A four page folding brochure.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
I split my layout into six sections with the concept that the two outer sections would be the front and
back of the brochure and the four middle sections would be the body of the brochure.
I used two of the photo placements throughout the brochure to create repetition and flow on the right
side. I deliberately chose juicing photos that showed green and yellow to create a scheme with the
colors used for the scheme.
For the image of the girl riding her bicycle, I used the quick selection tool in Adobe Photoshop to remove the background of the image. I then used the refine mask dialogue box to smooth, feather, shift
edge and apply contrast to the outline of the flamingo. The changes I made in the refine mask dialogue box made a softer image that didnt look so sharp and cutout against the brochures background.
I then placed the girl into InDesign where I used the text wrap option to wrap my text around the
alpha channel of the image.
I created the logo in Illustrator using the pen tool and then I placed it into InDesign, where I used the
scissors tool to cut the logo in half.
Programs/Tools Used: Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop
Message: Inform my audience about the health benefits of juicing. A juicing store that provides health
benefits for a healthy lifestyle. I am showing them through the brochure how juicing is a big crazy in
the fitness industry.
Audience: People the have a healthy lifestyle along with families.
Top Thing Learned: I learned how to wrap text around an image in InDesign.

Letterhead
Description:Matching letterhead and business card design using a personally created logo.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
I created the logo using the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. I also used the color fill to color the heel red.
Once the logo was created, I opened a new two-page InDesign document and placed my logo .AI file
into this document.
I decided to make my first page a letterhead. I positioned the placed logo in the top right corner of my
letterhead. I made sure to keep it at least .5 away from the edges. I then typed my contact information
into a text box and positioned it on the right hand side of the letterhead. I made my name white to
contrast with the black header. I also used a red color font for my body copy to match the logo. I also
added a large black and white version of the heel as a watermark. I kept the opacity to about 15%.
On my second page I used the rectangle tool to create the front and back outline of my business card.
I then copied/pasted the logo and contact information onto this page. I kept the logo and contact
information about the same size as the information on the letterhead. I made sure that no important
information came any closer than 1/8 from the edges. I also brought the black into the business card
to help unify the stationery pieces.
Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator & InDesign
Message: Fashion forward stylist who can help designers market their designs.
Audience: Bloggers, fashion designers, and anyone in the fashion industry that wants to build their
success.
Top things learned: How to brand a company using a unified letterhead and business card design.

Montage
Description:
An inspirational montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the use of typography.
Process:
I cropped the background image to 8.511.
I selected the two background elements and moved the shadow and Jesus to the front of the image,
and then I added a mask.
With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged brush, I painted away the hard image edges.
With a larger black brush at 30% opacity, I blended the image into the background, so it looks like
he is melting into the scene and Jesus on the water.
I added some type with two contrasting fonts and I added a layer style (Bevel and emboss with a
drop shadow) to make the text more legible.
Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Photoshop
Message: I wanted to convey that Faith is stronger than fears no matter the situation.
Audience: Anyone feeling down and needing a spiritual quote
Colorized/Filter applied and where: I selected Jesus and increased the saturation to make the colors
more vibrant.
Color scheme: Big Split Complimentary and color names: Red, Orange, Yellow and Blue
Top thing learned: How to gradually blend two or more images

Event Ad
Description:
A color full-bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.
Process:
I scanned the girl running image, and then used a Word image effect to stretch out the picture to
a fuller resolution. Then I added rectangles with a complimentary color scheme for repetition and
organization. I chose two fonts with contrasting weights for simplicity. I enjoyed and was surprised at
how much I could do with the hidden design features of Microsoft Word. Programs I used: Microsoft
Word, Toshiba Scanner, PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter).

Web Pages
Description:
A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
I created this web page using TextWrangler. I had never seen or written any HTML/CSS. It was interesting to see how you could make a web page by only using a simple text editor. It was also able to use
the http://www.W3.org HTML validator. It was interesting because it decoded a lot of mistakes that
had to be fixed for an html page. It was useful to have something check to see if I had any problems
with my code.
After I marked up all my content and inserted my logo, I attached a pre-made CSS document to my
HTML. I then used the colors from my logo as the colors for my web page. I found these colors by
opening Photoshop and using the eyedropper tool. I also changed my fonts to Times New Roman and
Gerogia. I declared some backup fonts just in case the viewers browser didnt have these fonts. I also
used padding around the logo and text so that they would not be too close to the edge of the web page.
This was one of the most challenging parts of working with CSS.
Programs/Tools Used: TextWrangler & Photoshop and W3C Markup Variation website.
Message: That my company is a beautiful wedding garden venue
Audience: Anyone who wants to get married in a beautiful garden.
Top Thing Learned: How to change fonts and colors using CSS

Flier
Description:
Black & White promotional flier to promote a graduate leadership conference.
Process:
I first created some sketches of my layout. Then I used my sketch as a guide to create this layout in
Adobe InDesign. I used black boxes for repetition and contrast. I also emphasized one word in my title for more contrast, and to create a good focal point. I left white space and kept my body copy small.
I was given the image, logo, and content for this flier.
Message:
I am trying to reach recent graduates, who want to have an edge by becoming strong leaders, to inform them how this leadership conference will help them.
Audience:
Recent graduates who are 22-30 years of age.
Top thing learned:
I learned the importance of contrast
