Dear Editor,
I want to share an experience that I found rather
disturbing, and saw as a sign of decaying social
values. My nieces go to a leading British school, and
I sometimes accompany my sister when she picks
up and drops off her children. Like many parents,
she sometimes parks across the street and helps her
young kids across the road to the school. I have seen
drivers (and these are mostly parents) go by without
stopping for crossing families. Indeed, one time I
went to the school, I counted TWELVE cars passing
by, TWELVE!!! (All nationalities, I might add), until a
taxidriver (a TAXI DRIVER!!) stopped to let my sister
and her kids pass. Imagine that! Dear parents:--of all
nationalities, and all schools, and all neighborhoods:
even if you don't care about pedestrian crossing
etiquette, please stop for crossing children!

the city. I know it can’t feature each one but there are

I would like to bring an issue to the traffic authority that
needs to be addressed. I take my kids to the Corniche
a lot and we walk across the street through the 'main'
intersection--the one nearest to Ali and Sons which takes
you to the big area of coffee shops and restaurants. We
have noticed on busy weekends that when you cross the
Corniche road (not where it joins Al Khaleej)--the waiting
times for pedestrians on both sides of the road don't
work together. Basically what happens is that the green
light takes you to the middle island, and then you have to
wait at a red light to cross to the Corniche on green. The
problem is that often there are a lot of people--many kids,
strollers, old people etc, jammed together in a narrow strip
in the middle island. I hope the authorities do something
about this to make it safer to cross.

Machboos
Salma Abdullah of UAE shares her
fave recipe with us this month:

“Machboos is a traditional
Arabian chicken and rice dish
which is very popular in the
Middle East and eaten in most
Emirati homes. When I was
young, I helped my mother in
making it and now that I have
a family of my own, I make this
dish for them. My sons like it very
much.”

Ingredients:
2 cups rice
A Whole Chicken
Onions, tomatoes and potatoes
Spices (black & red pepper, turmeric,
cinnamon, and cloves) 4. Add chicken pieces into the cooked tomato
Chicken stock cube and onion puree.
Dried lemon 5. Mix the spices and add them to the pan
4 cups water along with chicken stock cubes.
Salt (to taste) 6. Keep stirring to allow the spices to be

7. Add some water and some dried lemons to

As a long term resident of Abu Dhabi, I’ve lived in a few more unpleasant smells. This is wonderful news. It’s
buildings and found that there is a problem with bad such a shame that it is not possible to retrofit old
indoor smells. Some of my friends and coworkers have buildings with new plumbing, because many old

to raise environmental awareness and
educate residents about energy
conservation. The campaign’s main goal was to
educate children and younsters on how to use the planet’s
limited resources prudently. We were piqued, so we decided
to check out their website and interestingly enough, it does
grab the attention of school going kids as it informs them
on the effects of over-consumption and the solution to the
problem by altering everyday habits. It carries latest
enviro-news and eco-facts about UAE. There were some
handy device installations for adults as well. Just ask your
kids to log on the website, choose from Energy Hero, Water
Hero or School Hero and they will be well on their way
towards eco-awareness. Be warned though, you might have
to get your act together otherwise the ‘Heroes of UAE’ will
banish you from their kingdom!

Abu Dhabi Mall with the joint efforts of Kitab
and ADACH. As the 20th Abu Dhabi
International Book Fair (ADIBF) draws near
(scheduled between 2- 7 March), the organizers
have unveiled plans to attract kids towards
reading books and expose them to a wide

mall library, five mobile libraries will also be
launched within the emirate this year.

 OFFICE BITES
The workplace is such a hectic environment
these days that we hardly give any thought
to what we consume before and during office
hours. Most us work on default mode and try
grabbing what’s convenient, cheap, and tasty.
And when we do think twice about food, it’s
usually in the context of weight loss rather than
improving our cognitive functioning and energy
levels. Here are a few easy rules to follow in order
to improve eating habits at work:

Strike A Balance
The five basic food groups that must be covered by any
meal are: proteins, carbohydrates, fats, fiber and vitamins.
Research suggests that meals with more protein and fats
are associated with better-sustained attention, focus, and
concentration. While meals that have higher carbohydrate
content seem to have positive effects over short term
memory.
Don’t Neglect Carbs
Good carbs such as fruit, vegetables, and brown rice
help maintain the brain’s supply of fuel which it needs to
function effectively. So if you wish to remain attentive and
sharp, eat a healthy amount of carbs in your meals. Don’t
over-eat though, because too much carbs can make you
feel lethargic and drowsy. Needless to say, the last thing
you want to do at work is doze off!
Pack in the Protein
Proteins such as meat, fish, dairy products, eggs, and nuts
slow the absorption of glucose so your brain gets a long
and steady flow of fuel. This helps you to sustain energy
and enhances your mood and memory. Meats, poultry,
fish, and eggs contain amino-acids which help produce
the neurotransmitters that keep us alert, energetic, and
zesty.
The Good Fat
Omega-3 fatty acids are good for your heart and they’re
great brain food, too. The fats found in salmon, walnuts,
and kiwi improve learning and memory and help fight
against mental disorders like depression, schizophrenia,
and dementia. So if you wish to retain a part of your sanity
for retirement days, Omega 3 is the way to go!
Eat Smaller Amounts but More Frequently
To maintain energy and performance levels, the last
thing you need is a three-course lunch. If you’re working
late, big dinners are also a definite no-no. Too much food
- even if it’s well balanced - is going to make you drowsy
because it introduces excess amounts of glucose in the
body at once. Remember: five to six small meals a day is
better than three square meals.
The Rule of Hand
Your hand is a highly sophisticated tool for measuring
appropriate food amounts for your body type. The fist is
the size of the carbs fit for intake during one meal; the
palm is the size of the protein. When you make an OK
sign with the thumb and index finger, that’s how much
fat you should consume. Then open your hand wide, and
that’s the amount of fruits and vegetables you should be
eating. It is so simple and quite literally, handy!
Time Management Tip # 5*
Pay attention to your body rhythm. Capitalize on
your most productive peaks. If you are a morning
person, tend to your most challenging tasks in
the morning, or if you’re an afternoon person,
use your morning time for more mundane, less
mental-intensive work.

Find out your Body Mass Index Today!
BMI stands for Body Mass Index or simply put, it is an index
which informs you if your weight is proportionate to your
height. By knowing your BMI you’ll have a better idea of
where you stand in terms of your physical fitness, and you’ll
be able to set more realistic goals. Discovered in the 1980s,
BMI has since been a basis for judging appropriate fitness
levels by trainers.
However, recent studies do suggest the Body Fat
Percentage calculations are more accurate as they account
for muscular weight as well. This makes them more precise
for determining fitness levels for athletes and bodybuilders
who carry more muscle than fat. Regardless, the first step
towards improving your body shape is to access which rung
of the exercise ladder you are on by calculating your BMI.

How to calculate your BMI

Step 1: This step quite literally requires you to step on a
weighing scale and make note of your weight in kilograms.
Step 2: Stand ram-rod straight against a wall and have a
friend measure your height. If required, bribe the friend
with chocolates to not reveal it in public.
Step 3: Once you have these two measurements, substitute
the values in the following formula:
BMI = (weight in kilograms) divided by (height in meters x
height in meters)
Interpreting The Results
Safe Zone: In between 18.5 to 24.9 is normal.
If your BMI is 18.4 or lower, it means you’re underweight
and need to eat more. On the other hand, if your BMI is
higher than 25, it means you’re overweight. If it’s even
higher than 30, it means you’re obese and therefore, need
to take measures to be fit again.
Calculating your BMI can help you gauge your fitness. Keep
in mind, though, that BMI is only a guide and not the
ultimate basis for physical health. What really matters is
what you do with the results and whether you begin
developing healthy eating habits along with regular
exercise to improve your physical well-being.

Cool Air in
Chilly Climes
My beef this month is about air conditioning. Heellllo! It’s 'winter'
in the UAE, and ACs in some buildings are still in full blast!! We all
know that air conditioning is as essential in this part of the world
as the air we breathe, and virtually everyone has an opinion about
air conditioning--whether you see it as a necessary evil or an
indispensable good. But make no mistake: right now
temperatures are so cool that your AC should be on official
sabbatical. The problem is that we are all severely programmed to
turn on the air conditioning--a knee jerk reaction to be sure-- even
when the weather is cool! Case in point: all those shopping malls,
office buildings and restaurants that are still blasting frigid air,
only because no one took the time to inform maintenance to turn
down the thermostat a couple of notches.
I am convinced that the biggest contributor to our carbon
footprint is the wanton use/ abuse of air conditioning. How can
we change our behaviour, you ask? Well, I say it begins with
taking the time to regulate and adjust your thermostat, daily.
Think about your behavior at home. Are you donning thick
clothing indoors when you could take off a layer or two and notch
down the AC or turn it off altogether? How about unused rooms
of your house; are you using the AC unnecessarily when all you
need (at this time of the year) is a bit of natural aeration, such
as a window cracked open, to circulate air and stave off mold?
Folks, the bottom line, like it or not, is that it is winter in the UAE,
and these temperatures, thankfully, are going to be with us for a
while. So embrace the natural cool and leave your trusted AC for a
blistering day!

A Woeful Situation and Heavy Blood
Arabic can be fun and funny when
translated literally into other languages.
A Western friend asked me to explain the
phrase “haltak hallah” (something told
to him by an Arab man). I answered that
“hallah” (that’s with a strong ‘h’) translates
to “situation”. So the phrase translates to
“Your situation is a situation.” (Huh???)
Well, it is more of an assertion, a reiteration.
“Your situation IS definitely a situation”.
Not easy to explain but makes total sense
if you’re an Arab. My friend also asked me
about a colleague at work who, whenever
exasperated, would cry out loud: “roh ballat
al bahr.” The literal meaning of this is ‘go
pave the sea’ i.e. go do the impossible.
If said casually this could be close to “go
catch a fish” but if uttered in anger, could
be more like: “get the hell out of here.”
Dileep from Sharjah sent us an email
asking “My boss always tells me ‘damak
thakeel’ – should I be upset?” Literally,
Dileep, it means “your blood is heavy” and
normally this phrase describes someone
who is dull, slow or just unpleasant. But
how he says conveys real meaning. If said
casually, it could just be a humorous jab.
Indeed, in some Arabic cultures “damak
thakeel” is sometimes said to a baby as a
teasing endearment, kind of like “you little
rascal, you.”

website, still in beta phase, that was
developed by Habib Hadad, a Lebanese
entrepreneur who cofounded INLET
International Network of Lebanese
Entrepreneurs and Technologists). Yamli.
com offers a smart Arabic keyboard that
allows you to spell out an Arabic word
the way you would pronounce it. Yamli
converts whatever you write using English
letters to the corresponding Arabic word,
in real-time. Hard to explain, but definitely
something there. Check it out.

Getting a taxi is next to impossible these days! I don’t mind waiting, at least not in the winter
months, but what really gets on my nerves is when people who have just arrived at the bus
stop hail a cab which has stopped for me. I have had my fair share of squabbles with complete
strangers because of such behavior. However things really get out of hand when a female is
involved. Men can’t argue with them nor make them see reason. Courtesy dictates for men to act
like gentlemen but it sounds like asking for too much. Especially when we are late for meetings
or interview appointments! Recently, I took a stand on the matter and refused to give up my
cab to a lady younger than myself. She made
such a scene! I was forced to step back

Riding the
Waves
Traditional dhows are indeed a widely recognized
symbol of Arabian culture. The word - 'dhow'
conjures up a clear image of proud Arabian
ancestry and heritage. A powerful link to the past,
dhows were primary means of sea travel and trade
for pearl divers, fishermen, and merchants. All
seafaring adventurers, not meant for dry land.
Traditional ship builders still rely on dhows for
transportation of goods and services as Karim, a
fish merchant, explains, "The basic design of the
Arabian wooden dhows is more sound than that
of these fancy new boats. I just commissioned
another wooden dhow today! The only change I
made is I had them add a navigation system to the
new one."
Classification of Dhows
Shu'ai is the most commonly used work-boat for
fishing and trading on inshore waters. With lengths
of ranging from five metres to an impressive 15
metres or more, Shu'ai of all shapes and sizes can

It has a distinctive concave profile, high at the stern
and low towards the bow with a jutting prow.
A less familiar shape for city dwellers is that of the
Boum. Usually sailing in lower Gulf than in
Northern waters its tapered stern it is
symmetrical has an imposingly tall prow often
used by divers as a diving board! They have a
higher tonnage than Shu'ai (400 tons at times) and
are longer too - often more than 35 metres.
A less curvy form of dhow is Jailbut which has a
rectangular profile so it can carry a larger sail. Aptly
designed for racing, these boats slice through the
winds with graceful ease.
A true testament to the durability of these dhows
is that you can still spot a few on display along the
Corniche shores, while others have been converted
to floating restaurants which entertain tourists and
residents alike.

not mean we are green-lighting your attempts to harm
the other person in any way. It just means that you
should try and sort out the issue by conversing with the
other party in a calm manner. Explain to them what
triggered your response and how to avoid such
situations in the future.
Think Healthy: Turn the negative into a positive. Step
outside for a brisk walk, run, swim, play ball or grab a
quick cold drink. Exercising might provide an outlet for
the emotional upset. It might assist you in clearing your
head.
Identify the Problem: Try keeping all your focus on the
reason of the conflict in opinion. Otherwise it will just
lead to more bickering and name-calling. Discuss.

'I' Statements: Don't play the blame-game. It doesn't
really help resolve anything. Use 'I' statements like, "I
am upset because you promised to help me with this
presentation" instead of, "You should have helped me
with this presentation!"
Let Go: It is considered bad form to hold a grudge when
all has been said and done. Forgiveness helps you more
than it helps the other person. Its tells you that you are
mature enough to handle your emotions and are in
complete control of your temper.
Humor Helps: Beware! There is a fine line between
humor and sarcasm. While humor can diffuse a
potentially explosive situation, sarcasm can set it off like
a time-bomb. So choose your words wisely.

Dear Um Saif,
I live in Al Muhairy Centre and several times while I
was in the mall I have seen naughty children (and I
think it is the same group of kids) balancing on the
escalator railings and sliding down, hanging
precariously as the escalator travels fast and from
high distances. I am sure this is not the fault of the
shopping mall, but there must be something that
can be done to keep these naughty children under
control and safe. Um Saif, I don't want to be a nosy
tenant, and I certainly don't want to harass my
neighbours, but it is difficult to stay quiet. Should I
raise it with the children's parents and the mall
management, or am I overstepping my bounds?

Dear A.S.,
This is a classic situation we all face from time to
time; and there's no doubt that it is always easiest
to walk away. My first instinct would be to
admonish the children directly, but I don't think
that it’s a good idea as badly behaved kids can be
rude back. The hardest thing to do may be to try to
talk to the parents (if you know who they are) and
to remind them that tragic accidents can happen
in seconds. If that's not an option you can raise it
with mall security or management suggesting that
they perhaps send a formal letter to the parents of
these children. But even if you don't do anything,
I think writing to Tempo shows you do care. So I
would like to relay your message to the parents
of these naughty kids, and to parents everywhere,
saying: good parenting means taking
responsibility for your children, and that begins
with teaching them good manners and discipline!

A Yank in
Well, it’s February again and that means the day that every
man dreads is near, the 14th...... Valentine’s Day! The Super
Bowl of Sweetness, the World Cup of Cuteness and the
Formula One of Fondness all rolled into to one. It’s time to
impress or winter will last a lot longer than the calendar says
it should, if you catch my drift!
As a single in Abu Dhabi, I am thankfully spared much of the
Public Displays of Affections (PDA’s) that would be visible
in much of the rest of the world on this day. Just because I
would rather be doing it doesn’t mean I want to see you do
it. The more physical fondlings are officially discouraged so
you had better get a room......and be married!
Just saying! I didn’t make the rules!
So I am off the hook this year as I do not currently have a
Significant Other to shower with flowers, candy, jewel-
lery and lacy things. I was once married so I know how it
works but now that I am single I kind of miss the challenge.
Despite the self-inflicted pressure, it always turned out fun
even though it is somewhat uncomfortable for a guy to go
out shopping for these items (especially the
“unmentionables”) without getting funny looks! You ladies
need to understand that. We try!
