The
Da
Del

Galen Festival celebrates the unique

journey of the Manila galleons and their
place in maritime history - spanning the
globe and linking the Philippines with
Mexico and Spain. For 250 years (from
1565 1815) the Manila galleons were a
conduit for global trade and cultural
exchange between Europe,
the New World and Asia. In October 2009 UNESCO recognized the unique
part the Manila galleons played in the globalization of trade and cultural
exchange by declaring 8th October as the international Da del Galen (day
of the galleon). Motivated by Senator Edgardo Angara, the Philippine
National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
Mount Mayon is an active stratovolcano
which last erupted in 2009. Mount Mayon
has long been featured on stamps as a
landmark of the Philippines (including
during the American and Japanese periods)
and other stamps have featured volcanoes
for tourism or simply because they form
prominent features in the landscape.

Tamaraw Stamps The Tamaraw (Bubalus
Mindorensis) is a small and shy buffalo,
also known as wild dwarf buffalo. It has a
pair of relatively straight backward

pointing
horns
which
are

extremely stout. Each horn is very wide

and triangular at the base, compared to
the domestic water buffalo or Carabao,
the Tamaraw horns are set close together at the top of the head and grow in
a V shape.

Chinese Stamps
The Yucheng Post in Gaoyou City,
according to preliminary textual
research, is currently the largest and
most completely preserved ancient
courier station in China where couriers
changed horses and rest. The ruins of the
existing Yucheng Post were a building of
the Ming dynasty (1368-1644).
Some twenty years ago there were still a
fairly large number of stamp shops in
Stockholm, the Swedish capital. In one of
the shops I discovered a set of three
Chinese stamps (Scott # 131-3) which I
found most attractive. They were issued
in 1909 to mark the first year of the reign
of Emperor Hsuan Tung. He later became
president and emperor of the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo, a most
interesting story which has been made into a successful movie called The
Last Emperor.
Dr. Hugo Junkers patented in 1910 his
design of thick-section cantilever
monoplane wings, built in metal. During
the twenties, his F 13 low-winged aircraft
with a single engine mounted in the nose
and a fixed landing gear became what
can be described as the most important
European transport aircraft of its time.
The F 13 was based on spars supported
with welded
duralumin tubes and covered in
corrugated duralumin plating. This created a very rugged structure.
