INTRODUCTION TO MARINE ENGINEERING

Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) a type of a machine that obtains mechanical

energy directly from the expenditure of chemical energy of fuel burned in a combustion
chamber.
Diesel Engine an internal combustion engine in which air is compressed to a
temperature sufficiently high to ignite fuel injected directly into the cylinder where
combustion and expansion or gases actuate a piston.
Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel a French-born German engineer who invented the
diesel engine.
Cylinder Head the part of a diesel engine that seals the other end of the cylinder.
Liner that part of an engine that consists of a cylinder that is closed at one end and in
which a close fitting piston slides to and fro.
Piston an engine part that slides in a reciprocating motion inside the cylinder liner
and actuated by the power of expanding gases of combustion. It is said to be the
heart of an engine.
Connecting Rod a rigid rod that transmit power from the reciprocating motion of
the piston to a rotating motion of the piston to a rotary motion.
Crankshaft converts the reciprocating motion of the piston to a rotary motion.
Camshaft the shaft to which the cams are fastened or which cams form an integral
part. The crankshaft thru a chain of gears or a belt turns it. In a two-stroke cycle
engine, it turns once with the crankshaft turning once also. In a four stroke engine,
once with the crankshaft turning twice.
Cam the rotating part of a camshaft that has a projection and imparts motion to a
roller moving against its edge.
Cam Follower the peg or roller that follows that curvature of a cam and to which the
motion of the cam is thereby directly transmitted.
Push Rod the rod is actuated by the cam follower and pushes the rocker arm.
Rocker Arm a center pivoted of lever that pushes an engine valve down when the cam
actuates the cam follower and push rod.
Intake Valve a spring loaded part of an engine that allows the flow of fresh charge air
to enter the cylinder when it is opened.
Air Intake Manifold sometimes called air box in bigger engines where air is
pressurized before charged into the cylinder thru the intake valve.
Exhaust Valve a spring loaded part of an engine that allows the escape of spent
products of combustion from the cylinder when it is opened.
Flywheel an engine part that serves to smooth out the delivery of torque or turning
power from an engine.
Propeller Shaft transmit the forward and astern propeller thrust to the ships hull
and limits the axial movement of the shaft.
