22 Tithing Lie$ Debunked

By Patricia Backora
LIE NO.1: Youll fall under a curse IF YOU DONT TITHE
The TRUTH: Just the opposite is true. Christians who live under
grace are not under Mosaic Law, with all its curses for failure to
keep it perfectly (Gal.5:18). Jesus called tithing part of the law
(Matt.6: 16). The death of Christ ushered in a new, and far better,
covenant, making the Old Covenant obsolete (Col.2:14; Heb.8:13).
Keep one point of law and youre obligated to keep ALL of the Law
(Galatians 5:3). Seeking to gain Gods approval through any
religious act, including tithing, makes you fall from grace (Gal.5:4).
Living under any part of Old Testament Law, including tithing,
brings you back under the curse of the Law: Galatians 3:13.
LIE NO.2: Tithing IS AN ACT OF FAITH WHICH OBLIGATES GOD TO
OPEN THE WINDOWS OF HEAVEN AND SHOWER YOU WITH MONEY.
The TRUTH: Throughout the OT, God opening the windows of
heaven meant rain. Period. Observing any part of the Law is not an
act of faith Galatians 3:12 says: But the Law is NOT OF FAITH.
Peter said you cant buy Gods blessings with money (Acts 8:20).
LIE NO.3: GOD COMMANDS ALL BELIEVERS OF ALL TIMES, IN
EVERY PART OF THE EARTH TO TITHE, AND THE PREACHER HAS
THE AUTHORITY TO BEND THE RULES OF THIS LAW TO FILL
MODERN CHURCH OFFERING PLATES.
The TRUTH: Tithing was given as an ordinance to ISRAEL only!
Leviticus 27:30-33 specifically mentions that the LAND is the source
of the tithe, not wages earned at Burger King. Verse 34, which is
the final verse of Leviticus, the Jews Book of the Law, reads:
These are the commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses
FOR THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL (not for non-Jews) in Mount Sinai.
Changing Gods laws is an Antichrist activity (Dan.7:25). God gave
no one authority to tamper with the Law of Moses (Deut.4:2),
including the proviso of who was required to keep it (Lev.27:34).
LIE NO.4: SINCE CHRISTIANS ARE SPIRITUAL ISRAEL, CHRISTIANS
MUST TITHE TO ordained ministers, THE SPIRITAL LEVITES.
The TRUTH: Jesus never divided clergy from laity. Were to relate to
one another as brethren only (Matt.23:8) I wonder why spiritual

levites wont accept spiritual dollars. All Christians are Christs Royal
Priesthood (I Pet.2:5,9). The Levites, who the preachers readily
identify with, were actually servants of the priests (Numbers 18:6).
THE LEVITES TITHED TO THE PRIESTS (Num.18:25-32). OLD
COVENANT PRIESTS DID NOT TITHE TO ANYONE. Tithers deny their
own priesthood in Christ Jesus.
LIE NO.5: ALL ISRAELITES HAD TO TITHE ON THEIR WAGES.
The TRUTH: Only FOOD was ever tithed under the Law of Moses.
Tithes were owed ONLY by owners of farms and ranches, not the
poor pea-pickers on their payroll.
Leviticus 27:30: And all the tithe OF THE LAND, whether the seed
OF THE LAND, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lords: it is holy unto
the Lord.

LIE NO. 6: TIHES MUST BE COLLECTED EVERY SINGLE WEEK.

The TRUTH: Tithing was done only at harvest time, when the crops
ripened. No tithe was paid during the Sabbatical (seventh) year,
because no crops were grown, and the land was allowed to rest
(Lev.25:4). How many preachers give poor people a break from
tithing TO THEM every seventh year? When hell freezes over!

LIE NO.7: PAUL DEMANDED TITHES IN I CORINTHIANS CHAPTER 9.

The TRUTH:
Paul asked only for edible things, not for tithes on wages (I Cor.9:7;
I Tim.5:18).
Paul was a Benjamite, not a Levite. Paul was very learned in the
Law. He knew a Benjamite had no right to demand tithes. In Acts
20:33: Paul declares: I have coveted no mans silver or gold, or
apparel. Paul also says in verse 27 that he had declared ALL the
counsel of God. If Christians had to tithe and Paul never taught it,
Paul lied when he claimed hed been faithful to pass on all Gods
orders to the flock.
LIE NO.8: THE TITHE IS ALWAYS TEN PERCENT, PERIOD.
The TRUTH: Three different tithes were paid in ancient Israel by
ordinary Israelites. One-tenth of Israels agricultural output went to
the Levites (Numbers 18:21). Out of what remained, The Festival
Tithe was set aside by farming families to be consumed in a joyous
celebration before the Lord (Deuteronomy 14: 22-27). The Poor
Tithe was collected every three years in each seven-year tithing
cycle (Deuteronomy 14:28-29; 26:12-15). This tithe was consumed
by the poor, which included the Levites! Still another tithe was
presented by the Levites to the High Priest (Num.18:25-32).

To further complicate matters, Mosaic Law scholars disagree on

whether the Festival tithe would have been collected on the third
and sixth years of the seven-year tithing cycle, along with the poor
tithe, in addition to the ten per cent off the top earmarked for the
Levites, which was collected every single year but the seventh.
Some believe that on the third and sixth years, the Festival tithe
would have been dropped and only the Poor tithe and Levitical tithe
paid. But either way, the Israelite farmers tithing bill would have
added up to much more than the flat ten per cent rate demanded
by preachers, who believe in KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID, YOU DONT
WANT TO SCARE THEM CASH COWS AWAY!
LIE NO.9: ABRAHAM SET THE EXAMPLE FOR TITHING YOUR
PAYCHECK.
THE TRUTH: Wicked Sodom was the SOURCE of Abrahams tithe,
the very first tithe recorded in Scripture! Genesis Chapter 14 tells
how Lot, Abrahams nephew, dwelt in Sodom. Sodom was invaded
by the Kings of the Plain. All its citizens were kidnapped and their
goods looted. Abraham fought and rescued Lot and all the people of
Sodom, along with their stolen goods. Abraham gave Melchisedek
ten per cent of the spoils of war, not ten per cent of his personal
wealth. Abraham presented a tithe of other peoples property!
LIE NO. 10: JACOB SET THE EXAMPLE FOR SACRIFICIAL CHRISTIAN
TITHING.
The TRUTH: Jacob, like Abraham, is recorded as voluntarily tithing
only ONCE. Jacobs vow to tithe to the Lord was CONDITIONAL. IF
God would provide food for Jacob to eat, clothes for him to wear,
protect him in his journeyings, and bring him safely back to his
fathers house, THEN the LORD would be his God, and Jacob would
give God a tithe of all that God would (IN THE FUTURE) give him
(Gen.28:20-22)! Far from giving sacrificially, Jacob covers all his
bases and pays nothing till God blesses him FIRST.
LIE NO. 11: ITS A SIN TO EAT THE LORDS TITHE.
THE TRUTH: Thats what it was FOR. Biblical tithes WERE eaten by
the worshipper, and also eaten by the Levites, the fatherless,
widows and the poor (Deut.14:22-29; 16:13-14).
Deuteronomy 12: 18: But THOU MUST EAT THEM (the worshippers
tithes) before the Lord thy God in the place which the Lord thy God
shall choose; thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy

manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite that is within thy
gates: and thou shalt rejoice before the LORD thy God in all that
thou puttest thy hands unto. Thanksgiving feasts didnt originate in
America, but ancient Israel!
LIE NO. 12: THE CHURCH BUILDING IS THE EQUIVALENT OF THE
JEWISH TEMPLE, SO MALACHI 3:10 IS COMMANDING YOU TO
BRING ALL YOUR TITHES INTO IT.
THE TRUTH: Early Christians HAD no church building. They met
mostly in private homes (Rom.16:5; I Cor.16:19; Col.4:15;
Philem.2). Church buildings originated in the early Middle Ages.
Instead of being told to tithe to the Temple, Christians were taught
that under the New Covenant, they ARE the Temple of God (I
Cor.3:16; 2 Cor.6:16).
So how do you bring tithes into such a sanctuary?
dollar bill?

Eat a fifty-

LIE NO.13: ORDINARY CHRISTIANS HAVE TO DEPOSIT TITHES IN

THE CHURCH BANK ACCOUNT, WHICH CORRESPONDS TO THE
STOREHOUSE OF MALACHI 3:10!
THE TRUTH: NOWHERE in the New Testament, not even in the Old,
does God command a wage earner to tithe. The ONLY tithing
storehouses belonged to the Levitical Priesthood, whose members
served in 24 rotating courses throughout the year (I Chron.24:119). The tithing storehouse mentioned in Malachi 3:10 was a barn
to store farm crops in, not an ATM machine. These foodstuffs fed
ONLY those priests who were in Jerusalem taking their turn to
minister at the altar. Once their tour of duty was finished for the
year, theyd leave Jerusalem (and its Temple storehouses) and go
home to eat.
Ordinary farmers paid firstfruits of their early ripening crops, but
the actual tithe for the priesthood (heave offering) was brought to
the Temple storehouses BY THE LEVITES, (Num.18:25-32;
Neh.10:38). The Levites tithe was stored in their cities for their
personal consumption (Neh.10:37b).The Tithe of the Poor, paid
every three years, was stored inside the Israelites cities so Levites
and poor people could eat (Deut. 14:28-29).

LIE NO. 14: TITHES ARE GODS WAY TO FINANCE CHURCH

BUILDINGS.
THE TRUTH: The only building God seems interested in is the
edification (building up) of the spiritual House of God (I Cor.3:16:2
Cor.6:16; Eph.4:12;Heb.3:6; I Pet.2:5).
LIE NO. 15: TITHING IS GOOD DISCIPLESHIP!
THE TRUTH: NOWHERE is it written that Jesus ever tithed, and He
never taught poor people to tithe on money! Jesus was a carpenter
by trade (Matt.13:55; Mark 6:3). Unless Jesus grew a garden or
raised livestock on the side, He would not have owed ANY tithes!
LIE NO. 16: JESUS AND THE APOSTLES FINANCED THEIR MINISTRY
WITH TITHES
THE TRUTH: NOWHERE does it state that Jesus, Paul or Peter asked
for tithes to be paid to them! Jesus sprang from the tribe of Judah
(Heb.7:14). Paul came from the tribe of Benjamin (Acts13:21). Only

members of the tribe of Levi qualified to collect tithes

(Num.18:21,26; Heb.7:5) And of this tribe, only the sons of Aaron
qualified to take first-fruits (cream of the crop) offerings (Ex.28:1;
Num.18:8-19). Next time your preacher asks for a firstfruits
offering, ask him which family tree he grew on!
LIE NO. 17: ONLY TITHERS QUALIFY TO SERVE IN THE MINISTRY
OF THE CHURCH.
THE TRUTH: WHOSE CHURCH? NOT ONE Scripture commands New
Covenant Christians to tithe! In I Tim.3: 1-12 Paul lists the
qualifications for men in ministry. They include being vigilant
(watchful), well-behaved, non-violent, temperate in wine drinking,
NOT GREEDY OF FILTHY LUCRE, having a pure conscience, living a
blameless life, with their wife possessing a godly character. Deacons
should have only one wife and rule their own houses well, Did Paul
forget to mention tithing as a leadership qualification?
LIE NO. 18: PEACE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN DOCTRINAL
DIFFERENCES, SO SHUT UP AND PAY UP.
THE TRUTH: WHOSE peace? Every burglar has a more peaceful
time of it when the lights arent turned on to expose his dirty work,
and the man he robs doesnt make an issue of it.
LIE NO. 19: Exodus 23:15 SAYS YOU SHALL NOT APPEAR BEFORE
GOD EMPTY-HANDED YOUVE GOT NO RIGHT TO APPROACH GOD
WITHOUT TITHES AND OFFERINGS!
THE TRUTH: WHOA! SOME people were commanded to appear three
times a year with certain offerings and sacrifices, but WHO? Just
TWO VERSES later, we have the answer!
Exodus 23: 17: THREE (3) times in the year shall all thy MALES
appear (with those offerings)! (Sorry, Preach, that excludes me, and
over half your congregation!) Exodus 34:23 repeats this
commandment to Jewish MALES:
Three times a year, not every Sunday, shall all your MENCHILDREN
(MALES!) appear, Any preacher who badgers some poor widow for
money with these Scriptures is banking on her ignorance and that
preacher is a thief and a robber, and no amount of positive
confession or threats of hell fire can change her gender.
And as for our appearing before God, were ALREADY in the
Presence of Almighty God! We dont GO TO a Temple. We ARE His

Temple (I Cor.3:16; 2 Cor.6:16). The way we approach God

changed dramatically after the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.
The Holy Spirit lives inside us in a way unknown to Old Testament
worshippers. He that is joined to the Lord is one spirit (I Cor.6:17).
Preachers who appeal to Old Testament Law to get people to give
out of guilt are perverting the Word of God out of greed.
LIE NO. 20: IT IS A SIN TO EVEN QUESTION LONG-ESTABLISHED
CHURCH DOCTRINES.
THE TRUTH: Jesus attacked vain TRADITONS OF MEN.
Mark 7:9: And he said unto them: Full well ye reject (The Greek
word means to frustrate) the commandment of God, that ye may
keep your own tradition.
LIE NO.21: JESUS MIGHT HAVE NAILED MOSES ORDINANCES TO
THE CROSS BUT SINCE TITHING IS SUCH A GREAT IDEA, AND
BRINGS MONEY INTO THE CHURCH, AN EXCEPTION SHOULD BE
MADE AND THIS ONE POINT OF THE LAW OF MOSES SHOULD BE
UN-NAILED FROM THE CROSS OF CHRIST AND CARRIED OVER TO
THE CHURCH.
The TRUTH: Changing (adding to, or taking from) the Scriptural
requirements of Gods Word is NEVER a good idea (see Deut. 4:2
and Rev. 22:18-19)! When you change the rules and regulations for
keeping the tithe, and make a modernized mess out of His old laws,
God takes offense. He sees it as law-breaking, punishable by
coming under the curse of the law.
LIE NO. 22: ALTHOUGH WE ARE NOT UNDER THE LAW (Rom.6:14;
Gal.5:18), TITHING IS STILL A SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLE, SO
FAILURE TO TITHE IS A SIN AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT, SAME AS
ANANIAS AND SAPPHIRA COMMITTED IN ACTS 5.
The TRUTH: There is no such thing as a tithing principle in the bible,
only a tithing LAW, and seminary-educated preachers know it (but
they keep this liberating truth under their hat). In Acts Chapter 15
the apostles held a church council to decide whether Gentile
converts needed to keep the Law of Moses.
Their conclusion:
Acts 15:28: FOR IT SEEMED GOOD TO THE HOLY GHOST, and to us,
to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:
VERSE 29: That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from
blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which

if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.* * * * It

SEEMED GOOD TO THE HOLY GHOST to put only four restrictions on
the liberty of the disciples, and NONE of them mention tithing of
any kind!
Because of the abominable way unscrupulous preachers have used
Ananias and Sapphiras horrible story to pry money out of Gods
people, I will, at length, shed light on the nature of their sin against
God, and what it was not.
Exactly what sin could the couple have committed that was so bad
God would strike them dead for it? Contrary to what the worst of
predatory preachers would have you to believe, their sin had
NOTHING to do with monetary tithing. Their death didnt even
happen as punishment for being stingy with freewill offerings! Yes,
money was involved in their sin, but it was their OWN money they
lied to God about, not money they owed to the church. Actually,
this story begins in the preceding chapter, Acts Chapter 4. Instead
of zooming on up to where Ananias and Sapphira drop dead, as one
crafty preacher did in his online sermon, lets consider each relevant
verse to get a feel for the contextual setting in which the couples
REAL sin against the Holy Spirit was committed.
Acts 4:32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one
heart and one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the
things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things
common. ***What love, what unity in the Spirit of Christ! What
selflessness! A far cry from selfish televangelists who impoverish
others to make themselves richer!
Thats the kind of church
Ananias and Sapphira belonged to.
VERSE 33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the
resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
You want to see more power in your witnessing as a church? Start
loving one another in the Love of Christ and being concerned about
one anothers needs. In that way, the world will know that Jesus
still lives, as it sees Christ living in and through you, and God will
pour out His power and Spirit of Grace upon your church as never
before.
VERSE 34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as
many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought
the prices of the things that were sold. ***These church people
showed by their actions that they actually believed their treasures
were laid up in heaven, not on earth, contrary to what prosperity
teachers will tell you!
VERSE 35
And laid them down at the apostles feet.
And
distribution was made to every man according as he had need.

Notice, the apostles didnt grab this loot and rush off to buy
Cadillacs and Rolexes. The proceeds supported the needy, not the
greedy, in the church! Today a lot of people who get behind the 8ball due to some type of misfortune are made to feel like leeches
when they go to the church for help to put food on their table. Sick
or well, old or young, theyre either told to go get a job or they
don't deserve to eat.
And theyre viewed as failures in the
preachers School of Prosperity!
VERSE 36 And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas,
(which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation, a Levite, and of
the country of Cyprus). * * * We need more "sons of consolation"
in the church today, and fewer "sons of condemnation".
VERSE 37 Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it
at the apostles feet.
Acts 5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife,
sold a possession,
VERSE 2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy
to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles feet.
VERSE 3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath satan filled thine heart
to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the
land?
Now we have reached a key verse skipped over by one
unscrupulous minister who didnt want a monkey wrench thrown
into his doctrine of devils:
VERSE 4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine OWN? and after it was
sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this
thing in thine heart? THOU HAST NOT LIED UNTO MEN, BUT UNTO
GOD.***Contrary to what fear peddlers would have you believe, the
apostles DID NOT REQUIRE each church member to sell their land
and give the money to the church, and the word "tithing" occurs
nowhere in this context, and nowhere is it implied. The land was
Ananias to do with as he pleased. His sin was in lying to God about
what he did with his OWN money, not withholding tithes and
offerings! If Ananias had told the apostles that he was only donating
part of the money to begin with, he would not have been guilty of
lying to the Holy Spirit and he would not have died for giving less
than the total price of the land. But Ananias wanted credit for
donating an amount he didnt give. Plain and simple.
After skipping over this key verse, the preacher zoomed on up to his
favorite part, where the non-tithers get bumped off:
VERSE 5 And Ananias hearing these things fell down, and gave up
the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

VERSE 6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him
out, and buried him.
VERSE 7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his
wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
VERSE 8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the
land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
VERSE 9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed
together to TEMPT THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD? behold, the feet of
them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry
thee out.***Sapphira was an accomplice to Ananias sin. In lying to
the Holy Spirit, they tempted (provoked) Him to wrath. Again, no
mention of failure to tithe on his earnings, as greedy preachers
twist this text.
VERSE 10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up
the ghost: and the young men came in, and carrying her forth,
buried her by her husband.
VERSE 11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as
many as heard these things***Through this sad incident, the early
church learned that God must be held in reverential fear, not for
non-sins like non-tithing of wages, but to avoid REAL sins like lying
to Him to provoke Him!
In that church scenario where believers sold lands and houses and
"possessed all things in common", the needy were so well cared for
out of the church fund that not one among them lacked for the
necessities of life. This sent out a very strong testimony to the
world of the Love of Jesus, much more effective than verbal
witnessing only. I John 3:18 exhorts us to love not just in word, but
in deed and in truth. But truth was absent in Ananias life. He and
Sapphira were the equivalent of welfare cheats, in that they wanted
to live off the church fund and still hide away a nest egg to save for
a rainy day. That could be why they withheld part of the price of
the land. If the apostles believed Ananias and Sapphira had been
left destitute by giving the full price of the land, they could have
taken charity from the church common fund, like other needy
believers. Through their lie, they would have filched limited church
resources from poorer believers.
If anybody is sinning against the Holy Ghost, its those M$INISTERS
who are using fear of this sin to go against what He taught at the
apostles church council of Acts 15!
In years past, I would sometimes travel to three-day conferences at
a campground where the worship was wonderful and the spiritual
gifts flowed. One gifted speaker in particular would delve deep into
the Old Jewish Law and its many ceremonial ordinances, to show us

how they were spiritually fulfilled by Christ. Know what? The ONLY
old law they neglected to conduct a serious Bible study on was the
tithing law and the many ordinances which comprised this law.
Despite the complex nature of the Tithing Law, the leadership still
insisted that while the law of tithing was not binding on believers as
such,
un-Biblical monetary tithing was still a PRINCIPLE God
expected us to observe.
Out of all the hundreds of passages these Bible experts quoted,
they never got around to Deuteronomy 14:26 where God instructs
the tither to buy any food or drink he wanted with money from the
sale of tithed farm produce. I wonder why! BTW, the ONLY time
money had anything to do with tithing was when it was too far for
the worshipper to haul his tithed produce to his place of worship.
Then he could sell it, take the money and buy another tithe for
people to eat and celebrate before the Lord.
For all their singing and rejoicing about how Christians are free from
the law of sin and death and living under grace, your typical
charismatic church is very reluctant to say adios to tithing.
Religion is a money-making racket, and too much of it is at stake.
It only takes one (1) link to tie you to the chain of the Law.
Prove ALL THINGS, hold fast to that which is good (I Thes.5:21).
The other side of the coin is to reject that which is bad.
