Variant Design
What are customer trying to do?
DMU of any potential variant
CAD deliverables of and potential variant for
analysis, design, or documentation
The ability and need to design in the context of a
variant

Current solutions fail to address needs

No connection between PLM and CAD
No logic shared
Positioning information lacking

CAD models cannot handle the complexity

A CAD Design Approach only goes so far

A Desktop Design Approach can be
used for
Modules & Subsystems
Non-Configurable Products

Viable when:
Very limited options or variants
No business-driven configuration logic

Pain Points with Todays Approaches

Creo Design Approach

+ Accurate regenerated 3D Design

- Very limited options and variant
-

capabilities
No business driven
configuration logic

Windchill Driven Approach

+ Business and configuration logic drive the

design
+ Extensive options and variations
capabilities
- Poor integration into 3D Design leads to
inaccurate positioning of components
- Additional effort for manual filtering and
positioning of overloaded 3D Design

12

Creo Options Modeler

Key Capabilities
Can be used independently or with Windchill
Without Windchill no business rules/logic management
True AnyBOM capabilities are available from the coupled solution

The ability to build configurable products

Convert existing overloaded assemblies or start from scratch
Assemble modules

The ability to define modules

Add module variants to modules
Map references between module variants

Build variants
Read variant specs directly from Windchill
Manually define variants through interactive choice selection

13

Options and Variants Some Basics

Product Variant
A specific end user deliverable configuration

Configurable Product
A generic assembly which contains modules
from which a design solution will be selected.
This is replacement technology for
overloaded assemblies

Configurable Module
A subassembly that contains multiple possible
solutions; this is in the configurable product but
never in a variant
When a specific variant is generated only one
choice from a module is included and the
module is collapsed out of the assembly

Module Variant
One of the possible options within the module
