Kranzberg Arts Foundation Planning .ZACK Venue

First phase to open
in August 2016
The Kranzberg Arts Foundation,
established
and
headed
by
philanthropists and arts supporters
Ken and Nancy Kranzberg, is currently
developing a new multi-purpose venue
in Grand Centers historic Cadillac
Building at 3224 Locust St. (formerly
Plush nightclub and restaurant).
The new four-story, 40,000-squarefoot space, called .ZACK, will include
the following elements:
200-seat proscenium-style theatre
to be shared by up to six resident arts

organizations, with co-op office space,

a community scene shop with separate
build and paint rooms, and prop/set
storage;

Full-service catering company

and
restaurant,
owned/operated
by award-winning local chef David
Kirkland (formerly of Caf Osage);
Fourth-floor ballroom private
event space with full-service catering
by Kirklands and panoramic views of
downtown St. Louis;
Third-floor commercial office
space available for rent to a wide
range of tenants.
.ZACK will bring synergy, access
and essential infrastructure for

the performing arts community in

St. Louis and will be a venue in
which patrons can have a dynamic,
360-degree experience, said Chris
Hansen, the foundations director of
operations. From theater fans to food
and beverage lovers, and those looking
to host special events, residents of
.ZACK will provide a world class
experience for audiences from across
the region.
Swansea, Ill.-based U-Studios,
Incorporated will design the new
development. The first phase of
.ZACK, including the lobby, theater
and second-floor performing arts
incubator, as well as the full-service

catering operation, is expected to be

operational in August 2016.
Nancy and I have always felt that
one of the most important things
St. Louis has to offer is its cultural
vibrancy not just in terms of the
large institutions, but also the small
grassroots organizations that bring
enormous diversity to the city's
cultural landscape; and we made
up our minds that we wanted to do
something that would help make that
possible, said foundation founder Ken
Kranzberg.

Little Black Dress: From Mourning To Night

New exhibit runs through Sept. 5 at
Missouri History Museum in Forest Park
Drawing on its extensive textile
collection, the Missouri History
Museum has created Little Black
Dress: From Mourning to Night. The
6,000-square-foot exhibition opened
April 2 and runs through Sept. 5.
Little Black Dress explores the
incredible journey of the black dress
from a symbol of mourning to the iconic
fashion statement that it is today.
With more than 60 dresses on display
as well as incredible accessories, the
exhibit examines the way womens
lives have changed since the Victorian
era through the lens of this wardrobe
staple.
Little Black Dress showcases
dresses primarily from the Missouri
History Museums collection, many
of which have never been on display
before. The large number of black
dresses in this collection speaks
volumes about the importance of the
little black dress to women in St. Louis.
Most women purchased dresses from
local stores and dressmakers. Others
went as far away as Paris to buy their
frock or to have a special little black

dress made just for them.

During the mid to late 1800s, black
clothing was worn primarily during
times of mourning. This culture of
mourning began to fade at the turn
of the 20th century and elaborate
mourning rituals soon came to an end.
Little Black Dress is a fun and
thought-provoking exhibition that
tells the story of not just what women
wore, but why they wore it, and why
the little black dress is a staple in the
modern womans wardrobe.
In addition to the exhibit, the
Missouri History Museum Press is
publishing a companion book, which
includes 75 color photographs and
additional historical background for
many of the objects in the exhibit.
The book, also titled Little Black
Dress: From Mourning to Night, is
available for purchase in the Missouri
History Museum Shop or online at
mohistory.org/publications or Amazon.
com for $35.
Admission to the exhibit is free. For
more details, visit, www.mohistory.
org.
