Dana Hogan (pictured here) took over the reins as Kingsbury town Supervisor in January of this
year. Dana has been a life-long resident of Kingsbury, having been raised on the Hogan Dairy
farm in the town. He resides there with his wife, Michele, and a 17 year old daughter and 15 year
old son. Because of his long history in the Town, he serves as a good spokesman for the Town.
When asked why he decided to take on the job of Town Supervisor, he replied: The position
became open and none of the current board members were interested in the role. So, I took the
job because I believe in the future of this town. Of course we have all the many problems that
small northeastern towns now experience, but we are a very tight knit town, where neighbors
help neighbors and where many citizens pitch in to help make the town run smoothly. For instance, we are building a
new Town building and several town citizens have provided help with construction, painting and other services to
speed along the completion.
Our town officials are dedicated and work very hard for our citizens. As a group we help provide an excellent
atmosphere to raise a family. Our school facilities are unmatched by Towns of similar size. We have a wide array of
small businesses, and some not so small, to serve our daily needs.
Speaking of small businesses, we are working on a plan to expand water and sewer services along Route 32 so that
we can entice more businesses to move into the area. The quality of life here is superb, and I could not be happier
than to be helping our Town thrive.

The first Feeder Canal was constructed around 1822 at the foot of Fort Edward Hill, to direct water
from the Hudson River one-half mile (0.80 km) east to the Champlain Canal. When a flood destroyed
part of the dam across the Hudson River at Fort Edward, the feeder canal failed to provide enough
water.
In 1824 a new dam was built across the Hudson River upstream of Glens Falls and digging of the
Glens Falls Feeder Canal began. It ran seven miles (11 km) eastward to join the Champlain Canal,
guaranteeing adequate water at its highest elevation.
In 1832, the Feeder Canal was widened and deepened to accommodate boat traffic as well. Thirteen
masonry locks were constructed to overcome the 130-foot (40 m) vertical drop east of Sandy Hill
(now called Hudson Falls). This engineering feat includes the Five Combines Locks in Hudson Falls
(at the intersection of Pine Street and Burgoye Avenue. The Combine Locks lower water 55 vertical
feet (17 m). The locks are 15 feet (4.6 m) wide and 100 feet (30 m) long; these dimensions controlled
the size of canal boats in the Champlain Canal system while the locks were in use. The presentday Champlain Barge Canal eliminated the need for boat traffic on the Feeder Canal in the early
1900s.
Present day. Today the canal is still an important source of water for the Champlain Canal as well
as the Finch Pruyne & Company Paper Mill, which lies just East of the start of the Canal in Glens
Falls. It is maintained by the New York State Thruway Authority.
The canal is a popular destination for canoeing and kayaking. A seven-mile (11 km) long park/trail
along the old canal towpath is frequented by tourists and joggers and cyclists. The canal was added
to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The non-for profit Feeder Canal Alliance was
formed in 1987 to preserve, promote and maintain the Feeder Canal.

Making Your Family At HomeIn A New Home
(NAPSI)Most families choose to make a major
household move during the summer months. In fact, nearly
40 million Americans move every year, with the majority
of those moves occurring between May and August. But
others may be faced with the challenge of moving as the
season closes, after school has started. Heeding a few tips
from the experts can smooth the transition for unlucky
fall movers and help school-aged children easily adapt.
First, host a small gathering with neighbors about two
weeks after moving in. The time distances you from the
initial stress of moving, yet no one expects everything to
be unpacked. Plus, inviting other children to your house
makes it less awkward for your child to make new friends.
If theyre young, give them moving boxes to play with and
serve snacks on paper napkins. Keep it simple, fun and
short. Odds are your child will be invited to one of their
homes to reciprocate soon after and youll have started
the ball rolling.
Barbara Miller, an interior designer for kids, recommends
making a childs room look and feel as much like the old
room as possible. In general, moving is stressful. I like to
make the new room look and feel as much like the old
room as possible, says Miller. You can even paint the
walls the same color. Color is a strong sensory trigger and
can either comfort or agitate children.
Older children and teens may want to redecorate their room
as part of the excitement of moving. Even in these
instances, Miller suggests that you keep some elements
unchanged. How the bed is situated in relation to the
bedside table, clock and lightthings that would be
routineshould remain the same, says Miller. Its these
little things that no one thinks about until 10 p.m. when
children are in tears because theyre tired and dont know
where to turn off the light.
Lastly, schedule your high-speed Internet, digital cable TV
and phone connection in advance of the move in a single
step at www.cablemover.com. Like most movers, having
online access to the nearest carry-out options and being
able to watch TV shows and play online games on the first
day in a new home is critical. Of course, that means you
get the time you need to hunt for the missing sheets and
coffeepot.
