JOIN OUR “KHMER PRIDE 2010”: OPENING NIGHT WITH “IRON LADIES”
“Cambodia Pride” is held on the 17th of May every year to coincide with “International Day Against Homophobia”, which cele-
brates achievements for the global LGBT community and recognizes that there is still much progress to be made in today‟s world.
The “Pride 2010” Film Festival at Meta House opens tonight at 6.30PM with the work of young Khmer filmmakers Chheng Sam
Ath and Choun Sarin (CLA). Their film PRIDE 09 (2009, 30mins) about last year‟s event is followed by THE IRON LADIES
(2001, 104mins). Based on the true story of Thailand's 1996 national volleyball champions, this comedy follows a team transgen-

“SAVING FACE”: EMPOWERING LGBT IN ASIA, EUROPE AND AFRICA


“Film extravaganza” with surprise shorts by the Q-Film-Festival and a drag show. 6.30PM: I AM NOT WHAT YOU SEE (2006,
30mins) – Director Dil Hibhushan Pathak introduces us to the “third gender” in today‟s Nepal. 7PM: M-STLYLE LIVE – The
NGO “Family Health International” presents Cambodia's new programme to improve the sexual health of men who have sex with
men. 7.30: THE ART OF SEDUCTION – Bernhard Beutler's six-minute dance film (2007, 6.32mins) speaks about the frailty of
human nature, the power and the weakness of dreams. 8PM: SAVING FACE (2005, 98mins) by Alice Wu – An Asian-American
woman and her mother both find their private lives are becoming a family matter in this romantic comedy-drama.

THURSDAY 13th May

GOD LOVES “BAKLA”: COMING OUT NOW IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES


Meet activists and an author at Meta from 6.30PM! After the short TV feature MY GAY LIFE (2009, 6mins) by young Khmer
reporters, we present the BOOK LAUNCH- GOD LOVES BAKLA: Raymond Alikpala (Philippines) tells how he accepted being
homosexual when coming to Cambodia. 7.35PM: DANGEROUS LIVING – John Scagliotti‟s documentary (2003, 62mins) ex-
plores the lives of gay and lesbian people in non-western cultures. 8.35PM: I AM NOT IMMORAL – Edgar Oscar Atadero
(Philippines) will give a short talk about organizing “Pride” events in Asia and screens the campaign video. 9.00PM THE
WORLD UNSEEN: Director Shamim Sarif's look into a South Asian community in a divided South Africa (2008, 94mins).
FRIDAY 14th May

L 4 LESBIAN: “FEMALE TROUBLE” FROM PHNOM PENH, BOSTON & TAIPEI


Women‟s Power from Asia to the USA! Starting from around 6.30PM Khmer all-female MESSENGER BAND will introduce
you to a night dedicated to female filmmakers from all around the globe. 7 PM: PLAY IN THE GRAY – Kaitlin Meelia‟s PLAY
IN THE GRAY portrays the emotional lives of the members of a drag and cabaret inspired Boston theater troupe (2009, 91 mins).
8.45PM: CANDY RAIN – Chen Hung-I‟s stylish feature (2008, 106mins) combines four lyrical stories exploring the range of
women loving women in contemporary Taiwan; 10.30PM: IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK 2 – Emmy Award-winning TV
movie (2000, 96mins) follows three separate storylines about lesbian couples in three different time periods directed by Jane
Anderson, Martha Coolidge, and Anne Heche.

WE ARE DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS: “HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH”
The past, the present and the future of LGBT! 6.30PM: DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS – Richard Oswald‟s truly ground-
breaking silent film (1919, 51 mins) is one of the first gay-themed films in the history of cinema. The German “Goethe Institute”
presents it. 7.30PM BLUE GATE CROSSING (2007, 83mins) - Yee Chih-Yen‟s honest portrayal of teenage attraction mesmer-
ized the Cannes-Festival audience; 9.30PM HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH – innovative US musical film by John Cameron
Mitchell (2001, 95mins) about a fictional rock and roll band fronted by an East German transsexual singer. This musical has gath-
ered a devoted cult following similar to that of The Rocky Horror Picture Show…

FROM THE UNITED STATES WITH LOVE: “STONEWALL” AND FAR BEYOND
Join our „Pride 2010‟ closing night with a variety of cinematic snacks & surprise acts, starting at 6.30PM: GIRL INSIDE (2007,
72mins) - Maya Gallus & Justine Pimlott„s story of Madison and her family coming to terms with the young woman's shift of
gender; 7.45PM: FROM THE USA WITH LOVE –Living in US, South East Asians recorded a very special and per-
sonal message for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Cambodians (2009 5 min 44 sec). 8.15PM STONEWALL - Nigel
Finch‟s riveting portrayal of the gay community of 1960s New York and fictionalized account of the weeks leading up to the
Stonewall riots (1995, 99mins) is considered one of the best gay films ever…
