HEAD OF DEPARTMENT MESSAGE

It gives Department of Law an immense pleasure to bring out this Annual Report 2015-16. A fine blend of
academic progress with cultural and co-curricular activities ensures the success of any institute and overall
development of the future of the nation. In this year also we had made an attempt to provide our students
best of the opportunities to prepare them ready for the industry in particular and society in general.
Recognition in the Moot Courts Competitions, Seminars and other related activities exhibits the success of
the exercise we do take at departmental levels. Our confidence in each and every faculty members to
initiate and take responsibility gives them the courage to start new activities. I thank and congratulate all
my team members for these achievements.
The Department of Law places on record the support of University administration including Vice
Chancellor, Registrar and other Senior Officials and the Sponsoring Body for providing opportunities to

This paper focuses on understanding the basic concepts, theories
and functioning of state.
The objective of this paper is to provide broad understanding of
basic concepts of economics and understanding of relationship
between economics and law.
This paper focuses on broad features of legal institutions and
administration in ancient, medieval and modern India.
The objective of this course is to develop capability of the
student to write and speak in English correctly which is the back
bone of legal education.
This paper is intended to enable the students understand the
basic concept of liability and the nature of tort with reference to
established case law. Further, it covers the Consumer Protection
Act, 1986 to make aware consumer about their rights.
The objective of this paper is to make students familiar with
various principles of contract formation enunciated in the Indian

The students of the Department have participated in the following moot court and seminar activities
during the academic session 2015-16:
I. PARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS IN 31ST ALL INDIA INTER UNIVERSITY MOOT
COURT COMPETITION SPONSORED BY BAR COUNCIL OF INDIA TRUST FROM
FEBRUARY 5 TO FEBRUARY 7, 2016
Our team of students from IVth semester participated in 31stAll India-Inter University Moot Court
competition held at Fairfield School of Law, New Delhi from February 5 to February 7, 2016. In the first
round of the Moot Court Competition, our team competed with more than 45 teams from all over India
and was declared qualified for next rounds. The students were given four moot problems and every team
was required to prepare memorial from the petitioner and respondents sides. Our team prepared eight
memorials with lot of hard work and submitted them prior to the commencement of Moot Court
Competition. Our team stood in a position which was praised by the Organizers, Judges, and
Academician. Our team received certificates, momento & trophy from the Bar Council of India and the
organizing institute.

II. PARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS IN 6TH NATIONAL MOOT COURT COMPETITION
FROM MARCH 5 TO MARCH 6, 2016
Our team of students from IVth semester participated in 6th National Moot Court Competition held at
Geeta Institute of Law, Panipat from March 5 to March 6, 2016. In the first round of the Moot Court
Competition, our team competed with more than 45 teams from all over India and was declared qualified
for next rounds. Our team received certificates from the organizing institute.

INNOVATIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP A WAY TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ON
NOVEMBER 15, 2015
All students of IInd semester and IVth semester participated in Opine Annual Management Seminar on
Innovative Entrepreneurship A way to sustainable development on November 15, 2015 organized by
Department of Management, JaganNath Institute of Management Sciences, New Delhi. Students
understood that in todays global economy, knowledge is the primary source of innovation, sustainable
value and wealth. The development and productive use of knowledge is becoming the key process of
value creation for organisations as well as for societies. The autonomous professionals are becoming the
driver of innovation and success. They will only play this role strongly, when they can act as
entrepreneurs.

V. PARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS IN SEMINAR ON ARBITRATION IN INDIA: THE
EMERGING SCENARIO ON FEBRUARY 1, 2016
All students of IInd semester and IVth semester participated in the Seminar on Arbitration in India: The
Emerging Scenario on February 1, 2016 organized by Indian Council of Arbitration, New Delhi. This
Seminar was a very thought provoking opportunity for our students and they actively learnt about the
developing trends of arbitration in India in the background of rapid transformation of arbitration law and
practice. They also learnt about making a critical analysis of Arbitration & Conciliation (Amendment) Act
2015. Mr. P K Malhotra, Secretary, Ministry of Law & Justice, Govt. of India was the Chief Guest and
also addressed the Seminar.

A FORMAL INAUGURATION AND ESTABLISHMENT OF JAGAN NATH LEGAL CARE


AND SUPPORT CENTRE ON MARCH 16, 2016
A formal inauguration and recognition of the Jagan Nath Legal Care and Support Centre was done on
March 16, 2016 by Mr. Rohit Watts, Chief Judicial Magistrate (Secretary, District Legal Services
Authority, Jhajjar). He was invited for laying the grounds of the Clinic. He was welcomed by Dr. Raj
Kumar, Head of Department of Law and other Faculty members from the Department. The inaugural
event started by the formal welcome of the Chief Guest and by his introduction to the students by Dr. Raj
Kumar. Then Ms. Isha Saluja, Assistant Professor, Department of Law delivered a speech on how law
schools play a major role in providing legal aid to the society and the aims of the Department of Law,
Jagan Nath University for setting up of the Legal Aid Clinic. She also talked about how students will
benefit from this activity as this will impart a major practical training to the students. Students will
become part of delivering Justice to the society.
The event proceeded with Mr. Rohit Watts speech as he conveyed a lot of important information to the
students regarding the legal aid clinics. He informed that now legal aid clinics have been replaced by the
Legal Care and Support Centre and there are also Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs) who support in spreading
legal awareness. He advised the Department of Law to set up a legal aid clinic in the University itself,
where he promised to send an Advocate, who will help the Department in providing legal aid to the people
in the need. He also advised students to set up legal awareness camps in the rural area and also to visit
Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre, Jhajjar. He also delivered some valuable material to the students in
the form of brief booklets and assured that he will render his help in near future.
Then the event was taken over by Dr. Raj Kumar and he explained students regarding the Alternate
Dispute Resolution Mechanism including the mechanism of the mediation. He informed students that he
will help them in organizing legal awareness camps and was thankful to Mr. Rohit Watts for his promise
to provide support for the clinic.
The event was closed by vote of thanks from Prof. (Dr.) H.L. Verma, Vice Chancellor, Jagan Nath
University.
The Centre has been formally established in Room No. 303 of the University. A board has also been putup at the entrance of the University, which is the main highway road, to spread awareness about the
Centre.

The following activities have been planned by the Department:
I. NATIONAL SEMINAR ON THE ROLE OF COMPETITION LAW IN NEW ECONOMY:
ISSUES, CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES ON APRIL 23, 2016
Department of Law and Department of Management are jointly organizing the one-day National Seminar
on April 23, 2016 which will focus on Competition Law as an instrument for accelerating growth through
innovation and economic efficiencies thus maximizing consumer welfare by offering better products at
reasonable prices. Competition is irrefutably beneficial for every market participant. Competitive markets
give consumers wider choices and quality product services. It gives sellers stronger incentives to minimize
their costs through innovation and other productivity enhancing techniques. This enables firms to pass
on cost savings to the customers and offer better products. There are many issues that need to be discussed
to achieve the enshrined objectives of the Competition Act, 2002. An over-whelming response has been
received from academicians, practitioners and students from reputed universities and institutions
from all over the nation. 40 abstracts have been short-listed for presentation of papers in the
National Seminar. With this background, following sub-themes have been recognized for the Seminar:
1. Competition Law and Policy National and International Perspectives
2. Mergers/Acquisitions and Competition Law
3. Intellectual Property Rights and Competition Law
4. Competition Law and International Trade
5. Cross Border Competition Issues
6. Competition Policy in Agriculture
7. Competition Policy in Service Sector
8. Abuse of Dominant Position and Competition Law

CHIEF GUEST AND KEY SPEAKER


A request was sent to the Competition Commission of India for sending a representative for the National
Seminar and Mr. Kuldeep Kumar, Deputy Director (Law), CCI India has been nominated as the Key
Speaker and Chief Guest.
II. INTRA-UNIVERSITY MOOT COURT COMPETITION
Intra-University Moot court Competition is an effort to impart training to the students in the skill of
mooting and prepare them for inter-college competitions. It also aims at teaching them the court etiquettes.
In pursuance of these aims an intra college Moot Court Competition is planned to be organized in the
Moot Court Hall of the University.

III. COURT VISIT
The visit to Honble Supreme Court of India is planned for students. A letter dated 28.10.2015 and
09.11.2015 has been sent by the University to the concerned officials of the Court and as soon as we get
the permission from the Honble Court, the students will be taken to visit the premises of the Court. Court
visit is important for law students as watching real cases help them in analyzing on why the law is the way
it is and also helps in improving the approach to academic work.
IV. INTRA-POWER POINT PRESENTATION CONTEST
Department of Law is planning to organize the first Intra Power Point Presentation Contest. The object of
the competition will be to express the recent legal issues with the help of power point presentation. The
teams will be judged on the basis of their topic, conceptual clarity, innovation, expression, time
management etc. The event is planned to take place in Conference Room of the University.
