Executive Summary and Commentary of

Creating the Best Worplace on Earth
In many ways todays society has succumbed to the fact that the
workplace has become the most engaging part of the day. Whether this
is an actual job or a university or anything connected to it is not
important.
Due to this being such a significant part of our lives, one would assume
that we should at least be satisfied and to some extent even happy in
that environment but this isnt always the case.
The article starts with asking the reader what they imagine to be the
perfect workplace. In many studies what was found was that the
success rate of companies was strongly correlated to the positivism of
the workplace environment.
Therefore, how do we achieve a tranquil environment? With 6 major
techniques:
The first one is to let people be themselves. Promoting individualism
and a sense of importance and difference among colleagues, increases
productivity and the willingness to put in more effort individually.
Secondly you need to unleash the flow of information. Honesty it is very
important in this case that employees are informed about what is truly
going on with the company, otherwise, if they find out through other
sources, there might be negative consequences.
Furthermore it is important to increase peoples strengths. Investing in
people is commendable, training them is a profitable investment, and
additional courses, education and training is strongly recommended
because this will make them feel valued and appreciated.
The fourth technique states that you should stand for more than just
shareholder value. It is crucial for employees to know that there is
something more than only profit. They want to create, to come up with
ideas, and to have a sense of fulfillment by doing so.
Additionally employers should try to show their employees how the daily
work makes sense. Wages are not the only thing motivating an
employee. They should feel like valued members of the company, and
they should be aware of the fact that their input is valued and
appreciated. This can be achieved through rewards like new titles, or for
example new offices.

And the sixth and last technique contains to have rules people can
believe in. The article advocates that a system within the company
should not be discouraged, but this does not mean that
bureaucratization is encouraged, but instead, systematic structures
which can properly support the companies activities.
One of the key ingredients for realizing the goal of a positive work
environment mentioned in the article is making sense of daily work:
Beyond shared meaning, the executives weve spoken to want
something else. They seek to derive meaning from their daily activities.
This type of drive is of vital importance. Consequently, one would
expect a substantial amount of input in that direction, which many also
refer to as an Intrinsic reward system, or simply put, a compensation
of an employee based on immaterial gain and on satisfaction. The writer
believes and agrees with what is stated in the article, and believed that
the failure to implement such a type of reward system for employees is
tragic.
One of the most relatable examples of attention being put into this is the
case of Tony Fernandes and the company Air Asia. His charismatic
leadership style and his high regard for each and every employee lead
to success of the company from bankruptcy to being the leader in its
business and the top competitor in the market. His flat hierarchical
structure led to employees being satisfied with their daily work, which in
turn leads to success.
