ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We are truly indebted to many individuals who

directly or indirectly, are responsible for
this research coming to reality.
Firstly, we are most grateful to
have our guidance teacher, Pn Nor Zana ,for her
patience, guidance and continuous support to all
our struggles till now. She is a biology teacher
who had first brought us the idea of scientific
in biology category to make a research about
coconut husk.
In addition, we would like to
express our huge appreciation to the lab staff
of Muadzam Shah MJSC who guided us to make the
experiment.
Last but not least, to our beloved
parents for their love, patience and financial
support throughout the study. Thank you very
much sincerely from our heart.

Abstract

Noise control was one of the major

requirements to improve the living
environment. One of the methods to do
that is provided by sound absorber.
Commonly, multi-layer sound absorbers
are applied to absorb noise that was
composed of perforated plates, air space
and porous material. However, multilayers sound absorbers effectiveness
depends on their construction.
This study was conducted to investigate
the potential of using coconut husk as
sound absorber, and to make a better
absorber by increasing its thickness.
Firstly, the coconut husk was cut into
pieces and to make it tinier we used dry
blender. The coconut husk was made into
two layers; 5mm and 10mm with the same
square size 7mmx5mm. We investigated it
with oscilloscope and finding the less
frequency of sound released as a proof of
a better absorber.

Along with technology development, noise has

become a seriously environmental problem. Noise
can cause general types negative effects they are;
hearing loss, effect on sleep, stress, and effect on
animals and wildlife. There are some methods to
decrease noise, one of which uses sound absorption
materials. Currently, sound absorption materials
commercially available for acoustic treatment
consisted of glass or mineral-fiber material. When
review the issue of safety and health, these fibers
when exposed to human can interference human
health mainly lungs and eyes. These issues explore
an opportunity to look for alternative materials from
organic fibers to be developed as noise absorption
material. Organic fibers as basis material for
absorber materials have several benefit; renewable,
cheaper, and less potential health risks and safer
during handling and processing.
Several researches had made; Wang and Torng
(2001) have investigated some fibrous porous
material, rock wool and glass that manufactured in
Taiwan. They have indicated that sound absorption
characteristic values of rock wool were measured
and found to be similar to glass fiber. Increasing the

thickness material of the panel will improve the

sound absorption ability, especially in the low
frequency range.

PROBLEM STATEMENT :
Are coconut husks can absorb sound? By the layers,
thicker or thinner layer can absorb more sound?

OBJECTIVES
1)To determine the effectiveness of
coconut husks as sound absorbing materials
2) To measure and compare the amount of decibels
absorbed by the thickness of coconut husk layer

HYPOTHESIS
The thicker the layer of the coconut husk, the lower the
frequency of sound released

Variables:
Manipulated : The thickness of the coconut husk layer
Responding : The frequency of sound released (Hz)
Controlled : The size of coconut husk layer (5mmx7mm)

Materials required for preparation

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

2 sacks of recycled coconut husks

1 Dry blender
2 Forceps
1 White Tile
A cup of Glue

Experiment materials
1. Oscilloscope
2. Ringing Bell

PROCEDURE
1. Cut the coconut husk into small sized
2. Use a dry blender to tiny the coconut husk into dust
shape
3. Draw a 5mmx7mm square on a tile to ensure its size are
the same
4. Pour glue into the tile
5. Coconut husk (1) with 3 layers of husks
6. Coconut husk (2) with 5 layers of husks
7. Leave it dry for a day
8. Pick it up with forceps
9. Ring the ringing bell and put it to the microphone
10.
Place one of the coconut husk with the sound
11.
Measure the frequency of sound released.

Before the coconut husk layer was

covering the sound, the sound meter was
in normal sound volt produced. When a
thin layer of coconut husk covered the sound the
frequency of sound released is decreasing. As a thicker
layer covered the sound, the frequency of sound released
has a better reading which is less released .

Coconut husk has been introduced as one of

the sound absorber in this study. The results
from the experimental tests show that it has
good absorber properties at low and high
frequencies & can be used as a effective
replacement for decreasing noises. By using a
thick layer of coconut husk, the sound
absorber panel shows a good potential to be
an environmentally friendly product. The
innovative sound absorption panel has a
bright future because they are cheaper,
lighter and eco-friendly product.
