Pantaloons.

Recruitment
Selection
Employee Development Policies
Performance Appraisal Policies
Promotion Policies
Employee Welfare Policies
Grievance Handling Policies
Introduction
HRM Definition
HRM Stands for Human Resource Management.
Human: Refer to the skilled workforce in the organisation.
Resource: Refer to limited availability.
Management: Refer to maximise or proper utilisation and make best use of
limited resource.
Human Resource Management is the process of recruitment, selection of
employee, providing proper orientation and induction, providing proper
training and the developing skills, assessment of employee (performance of
appraisal), providing proper compensation and benefits, motivating,
maintaining proper relations with labour and with trade unions,
maintaining employees safety, welfare and health by complying with
labour laws of concern state or country.
The first Pantaloons store was launched amidst much fanfare in Gariahat,
Kolkata in 1997.
With a chain of 85 fashion stores across 44 cities and towns, Pantaloons is
constantly extending its foot-prints into the rest of modern India.
Pantaloons which was previously controlled by the Future Group has now
been taken over by Aditya Birla Nuvo Limited ['ABNL'].
RECRUITMENT
Recruitment is the process of finding and attracting capable applicants for
employment. The result is the pool of applications from which new
employees are selected.
Recruitment is a continuous process whereby the firm attempts to develop
a pool of qualified applicants for the future human resources need even
though specific vacancies do no exist.
Method of Recruitments:
Internal Search
Employee Referrals
Employment Agencies
Educational Institutes
Interested Applicants
INTERNAL SEARCH
An internal recruitment strategy is characterized by promoting employees from
within an organization to fill upcoming positions. Recruitment via this method is
considered as the most optimum method as it provides the organization with
minimum cost and time for the process of recruitment and creates a sense of
motivation among the employees.
- For TCS, Natrajan Chandrasekaran, the CEO of TCS got promoted, prior to
which he was the COO and Executive Director of the organization.
- For Pantaloons ltd, the Managing Director Pranab Bauras designation was
an internal search for the position of Managing Director.
Disadvantage: The only disadvantage for this method would be missing out new
and fresh talent that is available in the market.
7
EMPLOYEE REFERRAL
Recruitment method in which the current employees are encouraged and
rewarded for introducing suitable recruits from among the people they know.
- TCS has a scheme called BRING YOUR BUDDY (BYB) with effect from 01
December 2011.
- While, Pantaloons favors such methods of recruitments for the lower and
middle level positions i.e. Band 1 and Band 2.
Advantage: The credibility of the employee is at stake when he or she
recommends a candidate, hence the employee would recommend a good
candidate.
Disadvantage: Employees may sometimes refer relatives or friends, who may not
be suitable for the job. It might also lead to the formation of cliques in the
organization, with the members of the same group or clan getting together.
Employment Agencies
Employment agencies are the agencies that helps to find jobs for person seeking
employment or assist employers in finding person to fill positions that are open.
This Criteria is also used sometimes to hire employees.
Some of the top Agencies are:
naukri.com
LinkedIn
shine.com
monster.com
Educational Institutes
During the placement season, educational institutions, especially the reputed
ones turn into hunting grounds for organizations looking for fresh talent.
Campus placements at some of the top institutions in the country reflect the
condition of the economy and the industry.
TCS hires most of its talent through this method.
Pantaloons also uses this method of recruitment but not much as
compared to TCS.
INTERESTED APPLICANTS
Candidates send in their applications to the management either through post or
e-mail or in person or through the companys website and express their interest
in employment with the company.
TCS has developed a nice career portal as compared to pantaloons, where
candidates register through their emails and stay updated about their
application.
While, Pantaloons dont have such system, you just need to send your
resume on their career email id.
SELECTION
The process of choosing the most suitable candidate for a job from among
the available applicants is called selection.
The selection process starts with gathering complete information about the
applicant from his application form and ends with inducting the candidate
into the organization.
A typical Selection Process can have following steps in order:
Resume/CV Review
Initial Screening Interview
Analysis of Applicants
Conducting tests and evaluation of performance
Preliminary tests
Core & Departmental Interviews
Reference Check
Job Offer
Medical Examination
Placement

the first year, based on performance appraisals the employee is given an

advance.

In order to reward any employee in monetary terms on account of his/her
performance these gift declaration forms are used.
15
Performance Review
Each and every employees performance is reviewed on various intervals of time
n rewarded as Star performer, best employee or with some vouchers, etc.
Rating Scale
The rating scale is a performance appraisal form on which the manager simply
checks off the employees level of performance. Some of the areas evaluated
include quantity of work, quality of work, dependability, judgment, attitude,
cooperation, and initiative.
Balance Score Card
Balance score card is a performance appraisal method that is used to evaluate
employee performance based on weight age. Performed generally in the case of
Band 2 level (executives).
16
Promotion Policies
Promotion can be termed as an advancement in an employees career rank or
position in a hierarchical structure.
17
Welfare helps in keeping the morale and motivation of the employees high
so as to retain the employees for longer duration.
The welfare measures need not be in monetary terms only but in any
kind/forms.
