A new year, new resolutions

and new hopes...
Wishing all our readers a very happy new
year and may we give individual and
collective expression to our new year
resolution in addressing the Education
Challenge. I have a wish-list of interesting
challenges which I am confident that my
colleagues in IL&FS Education will pursue
with renewed ideation and intellectual
vigour
The current generation of learners are
'digital natives' as compared to the older
generations of 'digital nomads'. Given this
aptitude and appetite for technology (of
our learners), how we treat ICT in the
classroom deserves more respect than an
accidental integration at best, and a forced
intrusion at its worst. Probably ICT enabled
pedagogy is more a challenge to teachers
than the technology itself . So how do our
teachers navigate shifts in classrooms to

get more out of technology to deepen

insights into Science, research and
innovation at the school level itself? We
also need to design elegant programmes
for knowledge delivery by using shared
resources on the internet or in an off-line
mode, given the present temper of the times
There is a need to create wholesome
models which extend quality education not
just to private school-going learners but to
the marginalised and those studying in
Government schools as well. And while
many initiatives around this objective are
truly exemplary, many times these are
singular achievements on a small scale.
And while these establish good practice
and are inspirational, we need
transformative action which works on a
scale with speed and quality and is outcome
oriented

IL&FS Education is committed to these areas

of educational improvements through its
work in Government and private schools. We
are extending school and curriculum
boundaries through progressive pedagogy,
community based education, life skills,
communicative English, reading
programmes, technology platforms, school
enrichment programmes and mobile
solutions, impacting 13 million students and
teachers in ~28,000 schools in the country
As long as we all continue to execute our
programmes with fidelity be it in capacity
creation of teachers; defining, achieving and
measuring quality outcomes; and integrating
the less understood dimension of technology
in the classroom with flair and immediacy, I
am hopeful we will inch closer to improving
educational standards in our country

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is the chosen path for Katsina State's rapid
development, which is needed in order to alleviate poverty and combat unemployment in the state.
No meaningful development can take place in this century without ICT competence. Katsina State
Government has concluded arrangements to introduce an information technology based educational
initiative called 'K-Yan' which means Knowledge Vehicle

K-Class in Philippines
A holistic learning programme K-Class, is an ingenious combination of interactivity, curriculum mapped content & other
value added services. It integrates technology with teaching learning methodology for improving overall learning
outcomes. K-Class helps create and nuture a conducive and stimulating learning environment. It empowers teachers,
facilitates overall development of students and focuses on innovative IT enabled education solutions

K-Class speak
The greatest myth of our times is that technology is communication and the number one benefit of Information Technology is that
it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative, productive, learn things they couldnt learn earlier, in a
nutshell it is all about potential. K-Yan, The vehicle of Knowledge is a centre for educational innovations and one of the core
technology components of K- Class. This, along with ICT @ Schools is in sync with the 12th Five Year Plan whose objective is to
make quality education available, accessible and affordable to the target population in the age group of 6 to 18 years
K-Yan, is a multipurpose digital teaching-learning device which integrates a capability of a high end computer, projector, built in
audio - video, DVD/CD player and interactive smart board into a compact unit

The introduction of K-Yan in the academic session of 2014-15 has changed the outlook of the students in Balvantray Mehta
Vidya Bhawan. They have been able to visually perceive what, until now, they were only imagining. The K-Yan has turned class
rooms to smart class rooms and the students have fallen in love with learning - the fun way. It's easy to handle and is a useful
combination of a computer and projector
Granting compatibility with various input devices such as pen drives, DVDs and CDs , it's truly user friendly and beneficial
The accessibility of internet is another added bonus to teachers as it assists them in satisfying the curiosity of the most avid
learner and also in taking more and more steps to give students the best from the wealth of knowledge available online

ICT Initiatives
Digital Duniya
Wheeling computer education in rural India
Digital Duniya Computer Education on Wheels: CSR initiative of
IL&FS Transportation Network Limited (ITNL), Digital Duniya was
started 4 years back with an aim to introduce digital education to grade
5-8 students in Government schools where computer education was not
accessible. IL&FS Education is implementing this mobile computer lab
programme through 5 buses in Moradabad, Bareilly, Khed Sinnar,
Pune-Sholapur and Jharkhand for ITNL; and is also implementing it
under Oil India Ltd (OIL) CSR in Duliyajaan, Assam through 9 buses
Fun and Learning in Digital Duniya: The curriculum involves learning
through gaming and utility software. Some ideas from Digital Duniya that
other schools could implement are: Tux Paint to explain water cycle,
cycle of ecosystem, geometric shapes etc

Ability for calculations could be built using Tux Math

imaginatively. Tux Type can be used to involve
students in building a vocabulary through gaming
In future these buses can be used to wheel e-learning
programmes in sanitation, financial literacy, women
hygiene and health, functional English for students
and the community

Community reciprocating our efforts in Education for greater reach
The community from Dhule District, Maharashtra, have
demonstrated a lesson in ownership of their children's education.
Convinced that technology in education is a catalyst for a positive
impact on their children's learning, 40 villages took the initiative to
collect funds from farmers, teachers and parents for purchasing
K-Yans with multimedia Marathi content. In this way around 50
schools were able to purchase K-Yan with community
participation. Each of the school principals & teachers themselves
have contributed Rs 3000-5000 for this. Education Officer at
Dhule Zila Parishad (ZP) for Primary Department Mr Mohan
Desale has been supportive & has contributed Rs 1000/- from his
own pocket to each of the 50 schools. The 1st school to initiate this
was ZP School, Indave where the Principal Mr Gavit & his
teaching staff actually collected Rs 100-200 from ladies working
on farms towards the initiative. A leading institution from Mumbai
has supported a lot of schools with a small percentage of the cost
of digitisation. Dhule is the only district in Maharashtra where 50
ZP Schools were digitised at one go through this initiative of the
teaching staff & community participation

Panchi students made a special journey into the past on 20th Oct 2015, an experience
they had never dreamt of. They visited Humayun's
Tomb with Renu Punhani from IL&FS Education
to start a Math project. Amazed by its grandeur
and size, they explored the monument built 450
years ago, and learnt about symmetry in the
gateways, graves, on the floor, the ceiling and in
the gardens. Math came alive in the Mughal
Architecture from the medieval era. Climbing
trees and playing games, it was a day to remember
when learning and fun became one On their
return to the Panchi Centre, they did their Math
project with an understanding which was
intimately experienced

On the road to Success

Priya, a Panchi student, is 9 years old and runs a tea shop with her 15 year old brother in Ghazipur slums.
Her parents work in the IL&FS waste to energy conversion plant. Along with Priya and her brother, they
have 2 more daughters to support. Priya studies in Class IV in a Government Primary School but since
she has no support in studying post school hours, her performance was deteriorating. She even had
trouble calculating money at her tea shop due to poor mathematical skills. Priya has been a part of the
Panchi Programme for 6 months now, and things have radically changed for her. She attends school
regularly and shows keen interest in studying and has considerably improved with calculations

Exploring Fibonacci Sequence and

Inquiry Based learning

Bulletin Board - Resource room for teachers

Hoping to see a four leaf clover for a good

luck charm? Fibonacci told us several
centuries ago why chances are we wont the number 4 is not part of the Fibonacci Sequence!
Some ideas that have reframed epistemological
foundations have brought about a transformative
change in the way we view and transact with the physical
world the Fibonacci Sequence is one such idea where
nature and Math, two awe-inspiring worlds of their own,
are mutually complementary. The world loves ideas :
re-hashing existing ideas, dreaming alternative ideas
and innovating around the bigger ideas. The 'idea'
journey in our classrooms can all start with inquiry based
learning
Exploring the Fibonacci sequence in the environment
around us - leaves, flowers, fruit, phenomena etc;
observing, questioning, predicting/hypothesising,
investigating, understanding, explaining and
constructing our own conclusions can help in extending
the appreciation of Math in an intimate way. True to the
inquiry tradition, learning activities linked to the
Fibonacci sequence can be rich in content,
(mathematical reference in this case) and can integrate
Math with natural Sciences, ICT and arts to name a few,
and projects can be researched and designed by
teachers. Further, it will encourage learner groups to
spread out beyond the classroom; and can provide
sufficient opportunities to students to work at divergent
levels, given their learning styles and learning levels
Most teachers themselves have not had an experience
of inquiry based learning and so may find the process
restricting initially, but with iterations, training and
research this practice could be mutually rewarding for
students and teachers

Complete the Fibonacci sequence below (try to do it without help!):
0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, __ , __ , __ , __ ,
Let's draw some rectangles using these Fibonacci numbers
The interesting thing about making rectangles like this is that the ratio (the number that shows how the sides relate to each
other) stays the same, no matter how big the rectangle gets. This ratio gives us rectangles we call the Golden Rectangle
because they are said to be the most beautiful rectangles to look it. The ratio is called the Golden Ratio

From rote learning to inquiry-based

learning...
IL&FS Education project teams from across 12 states in
the country attended a workshop on inquiry-based
learning in Ramgarh, Uttarakhand conducted by Dr
Kamala Menon, Dr Vibha Raizada, Dr Srila Basu, and
Yashika Chandna, who are at the forefront of educational
research and practice in India. This workshop was
significant as our work in schools helps teachers
incorporate the constructivist approach. Inquiry and
activity based learning are very important dimensions
which help transform the learning experience to enable
students develop the analytical and critical thinking
abilities to function in the real world

The purpose of inquiry is to build an

understanding that questioning is the
essence of learning, to make questions
useful, and use them to generate new
ideas is the purpose. Learning
becomes useful when it is applied
