BIOGRAPHY
Sherman Lo is a senior research engineer at the Stanford
University GPS Laboratory.
Per Enge is the Kleiner Perkins Professor of Engineering
at Stanford University and the director of the Stanford
GPS Laboratory.
Yu-Hsuan Chen is a Postdoctoral Scholar in GPS
Laboratory at Stanford University. He received his Ph. D
in electrical engineering from National Cheng Kung
University, Taiwan in 2011.
Robert Lilley is a member of the FAA NAVTAC team
supporting APNT through Aviation Management
Associates, Inc. He formerly directed the Ohio University
Avionics Engineering Center, served as Senior Engineer
at Northrop-Grumman Corp, and as Vice-President of
Illgen Simulation Technologies, Inc.
Robert Erikson is graduated from Drexel University with
a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1973. Since graduation
he has worked for the Federal Aviation Administration at
the William J Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City,
NJ.
1. INTRODUCTION
Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) is seeing renewed
interest for its ability to support future aviation navigation
and surveillance needs. It is one of the primary
technologies being examined by the Federal Aviation
Administration
(FAA)
Alternative
Positioning,
Navigation and Timing (APNT) project to support needs
to provide an alternative to global navigation satellite
systems (GNSS) in the Next Generation Air Transport
System (NextGen) airspace.
As part of the APNT study of DME, the APNT team has
been examining means to improve DME beyond its
