General Description and Specifications
Introduction
The Model 308 Electrical Pulse Transmitter provides contact closures proportional to flow
passing through a Floco meter. By using a suitable contact sensing voltage, the contact
closures are converted to electrical pulses. The Model 308 transmitter is typically interfaced
with remote peripheral equipment such as:
The cast, anodized aluminum case of the Model 308 Pulse Transmitter is a wafer-type design
which is mounted between the Floco meter and optional non-reset or reset registers. A
specially designed all-brass gear train provides the gear ratios used to obtain the desired pulse
frequency through a glass-encapsulated hermetically sealed dry reed switch actuated by a
special dipole magnet. Oilite bearings provide low-friction operation of the major drive shaft,
which drives the dipole magnet and mechanically couples the pulse transmitter to both the
Floco meter and the register assembly.
The Model 308 is not explosion-proof, the reed switch is hermetically sealed and may be
used with an intrinsically-safe or non-incendive electrical barrier as allowed by local
electrical codes.

Installation and Operation
Overview
The Model 308 Electrical Pulse Transmitter is coupled to the Floco meter rotor shaft through
a series of reduction gears. These reduction gears are designed to obtain a predetermined
number of rotations of an output shaft used to drive the pulse mechanism. This output shaft is
coupled to a special gear train inside the pulse transmitter by two non-slip calibration gears.
The transmitter gear trains are available in ratios of 10:1 or 100:1. The Model 308 transmitter
may be used with or without a local register.
The Floco meter, register, and pulse transmitter may be calibrated by changing the two nonslip calibration gears. The pulse transmitter is designed for easy access to the terminal strip
by removing four screws in the face plate. The phenolic strip containing the reed switch and
its biasing magnet are easily replaced in the field. Reference the assembly diagram and parts
list in Figure 2.1, page 9, and Table 2.1, page 10, during installation.
Installation Procedure
1. Remove the existing register from the Floco meter.
2. Remove the calibration gear from the bottom of the register and install it on the shaft that
extends from the underside (solid side) of the Model 308 transmitter.
3. Mount the Model 308 transmitter on the Floco meter in place of the register that was
removed. The Model 308 transmitter may be rotated to orient the conduit opening in the
preferred direction.
4. If the register is no longer desired, install the blind cover (items 19 and 9) and secure with
screws (item 13).
5. If the register is to be retained, discard the blind cover (items 19 and 9). Install one of the
gears (item 7) on the top of the transmitter and another on the underside of the register.
Install the register on the transmitter, rotate the register to the preferred viewing angle,
and secure its position with screws (item 13).
6. Remove the side cover to access the terminal strip. Wire in accordance with local
electrical codes.

General Maintenance
General Description
The gear train of the Model 308 uses self-lubricating bronze bearings and no maintenance
should be necessary during its life. However, if a different gear ratio is needed, the operator
must replace the gear train.
Additionally, it may be necessary to replace the reed switch assembly in the field in the event
that the original reed switch assembly fails. A symptom of a failed reed switch is zero output
while there is flow or while the input shaft of the 308 pulse transmitter is rotated by hand. If
reed switch failure is suspected, confirm that the magnet on the gear train beside the reed
switch rotates when the transmitter input shaft is rotated. If the magnet is rotating and the
wiring and pulse sensing equipment is known to be functioning properly, the reed switch has
failed.
Replacing the Reed Switch Assembly
To replace the reed switch assembly, follow the steps below:
1. Remove the cover from the conduit box and remove the switch wires from the terminal
block.
2. Remove the register. Two small nuts secure the idler gear plate. Remove these nuts to
allow the disassembly of the idler gear plate, spacers and switch assembly.
3. Install the new switch assembly. Be sure the switch faces downward. Replace the spacers
and other parts removed in step 2.
4. Tighten the nuts so the idler switch plate can be moved by hand, but does not move freely
on its own.
5. Place the register on the transmitter and rotate the register 90 degrees in either direction
to ensure the gears remain engaged and do not bind. If the gears do not mesh correctly,
adjust the idler gear plate to obtain proper meshing of gears and then tighten the nuts.
6. Insert the switch wires into the conduit box and connect them to the terminal block.
Make sure the wires do not touch any moving parts.
7. Check the gaskets and replace, if necessary.
8. Replace the cover on the conduit box.
Replacing the Gear Train
To replace the gear train, follow the steps below:

block.

2. Remove the register. Two small nuts secure the idler gear plate. Remove these nuts to
allow the disassembly of the idler gear plate, spacers and switch assembly.
3. Remove the retaining ring and the calibration gear from the input shaft of the gear train
on the underside of the transmitter and set aside. Do not discard the retaining ring and
calibration gear.
4. Remove the gear from the other end of the shaft of the gear train, and remove the
mounting studs.
5. Remove and discard the old gear train.
6. Mount the new gear train, using the calibration gears removed in steps 3 and 4, and the
mounting studs removed in step 4. Do not tighten the studs. Make sure the gear train ratio
stamped on the cover plate is the same as that stamped on the gear train. Re-stamp if
required.
7. Place the register on the transmitter and rotate the register 90 degrees in either direction
to ensure the gears remain engaged and do not bind. If the gears do not mesh correctly,
adjust the idler gear plate to obtain proper meshing of gears and then tighten the nuts.
8. Insert the switch wires into the conduit box and connect them to the terminal block.
Make sure that the wires do not touch any moving parts.
9. Check the gaskets and replace, if necessary.
10. Replace the cover on the conduit box.
