INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
YOU ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEMPT ALL QUESTIONS.SCRIPTS WRITTEN IN
PENCIL WILL NOT BE MARKED
1.

(a) Cobalt, a member of the d- block of the Periodic Table, exhibits many properties
which are typical of d block elements.
(i) State TWO properties which are typical of d block metals. (1 mark)
1. _____________________________________________________________
2. _____________________________________________________________
(ii) Write the electron structure for elemental cobalt (II) ion. (2 marks)
_______________________________________________________________
(b) Cobalt (II) sulphate dissolves in water to form the hydrated cobalt(II) ion, which
is octahedral in shape. When this solution is treated with concentrated
hydrochloric acid, the hydrated cobalt(II) ion is converted to [CoCl4]x-(where x is
the charge on the ion).
(i) What is the name given to molecules such as water which bond to a central
metal ion in this way? (1 mark)
_______________________________________________________________
(ii) How many water molecules surround the hydrated cobalt (II) in present in
cobalt (II) sulphate? (1 mark)
______________________________________________________________
(iii) What is the value of x in the complex [CoCl4]x-? (1 mark)
______________________________________________________________
(iv) Name the complex [CoCl4]x-. (2 marks)
______________________________________________________________

(c) The complex [CoCl4]x- is blue and the hydrated cobalt (II) complex is pink.
(i) Give the complementary colour (absorbed) of the [CoCl4]x- complex. (1 mark)
_____________________________________________________________
(ii) Explain this difference in colour between these two complexes. (3 marks)

2. (a) The anti-cancer drug cisplatin has the chemical name
diamminedichloroplatinum(II) and has a square planar shape.
(i) Write the chemical formula of cisplatin. [2 marks]
________________________________________________________________
(ii) In aqueous solution in the body, one chloride ion is substituted by a water
molecule. Construct an equation for the reaction which occurs. [3 mark]
_______________________________________________________________
(iii) Draw and distinguish between the two geometrical isomers of cisplatin.
[3 marks]

(b) (i)

Briefly describe the physical process called panning by which gold can be
isolated. [2 marks]
_____________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________

3. (a) Match the following ligands with the appropriate characteristic. Each ligand may
be used once, more than once or not at all. [5 marks]
EDTA, CN-, H2O, Cl-, en, NH3
(i)

Used in detergents to trap Ca2+ and Mg2+.
