Engineering Design Project (EDP)

(MEE4999) January 2016 Session

Project Title:
Design and develop a light-weight and low-cost
drone
EDP Cordinator:
Dr How Ho Cheng
Project Supervisors:
Dr Chuah, Dr Yazdi, Dr Amir, Mr Gerald, Dr How
1

Project scope

Product specification:

Total weight: 150g or less.

Number of rotors: minimum of 3 rotors

In addition to key design calculations, the use of finite element simulation is compulsory for
the structure analysis.

Consideration of society impact, and environmental health and safety in the design must be
demonstrated.

The inclusion of remote control in the product design are strongly encouraged though it is
not compulsory.

Only the motors and the blades that the students can choose to purchase. All other parts
must be fabricated in-house in the lab or workshop.

For the utilization of in-house 3D printer, students are advised to first understand its capability as part their design
consideration.

Prototype must be produced in this project, and it must fulfill the following test criteria:

To take off vertically at the height of 2m at minimum, once the motors are activated

To lift an additional load of 20g at minimum (Note: 20sen coins x 5 will be used as the load)

To survive a free drop test from 10m height, without any evidence of defect to the structure and
functionality of the product

Ease of product manufacturability and parts assembly must be demonstrated
