Carbuncle pattern

Abbreviations:
Ch Chain
Dc Double Crochet
Dec Decrease
Hdc Half Double Crochet
Sc Single Crochet
Sl st Slip Stitch
St(s) Stitch(es)
Materials:
-Pink yarn (Pingouin brand): 100% Mercerized Cotton. This yarn is pretty thin (a
10x10cm sample has 35 stitches and 45 rows), so I used both the beginning and the end
of the yarn, doubling the thread used. Working with a thicker yarn will result in a bigger
Carbuncle.
-Black thread for sewing the mouth.
-3.00 mm crochet hook: to crochet the body.
-2.00 mm crochet hook: to make the other parts of the body (since those parts are
smaller, I prefer using a smaller hook to prevent holes).
-Red felt for the mouth, the eyes and the stone.
-White fabric paint. Youll need just a little to paint the details in the eyes and the stone
(you can either use a small paint brush or a toothpick).
-Hot glue
-Fiberfill for stuffing.
-A thin piece of annealed wire (like this) so that the tail is flexible. If you dont find it, it
has to be a wire that, when bent, stays bent. Not too thick though. This is not 100%
necessary, you can make a spineless (ugh, dont know the word in English) tail if you
want!

Small piece (make 4: two for each ear)

Ch 9
Step 1: Starting from second chain from hook, sc 8.

Step 4: Sl st and fasten off. Leave long thread to attach later.
Large piece (make 2: one for each ear)
Ch 13
Step 1: Starting from second chain from hook, sc 12.
Step 2: Turn and crochet (each stitch separated by semicolon): Dc 1; dc 1; dc 2; dc 2; dc
1; hdc 2; hdc 1; hdc 1; sc 1; sc 1; sl st; ch 2 and sl st (same stitch)
Step 3: Turn and crochet (each stitch separated by semicolon): Sl st; sc 1; sc 1; hdc 1;
hdc 1; hdc 2; dc 1; dc 2; dc 2; dc 1; dc 1.
Step 4: Sl st and fasten off. Leave long thread to attach later.
Sew parts together to make the ear like the picture below. Each ear consists of 1 large, 2
medium and 2 small pieces.
Tip: before sewing, hold the parts to see how it looks the best for you. If I remember
correctly, I put the large one in the middle, the medium ones right next to it, and then the
small ones. Start by attaching the medium ones to the large, one in the front and other in
the back. Then, do the same with the small ones.
Tail consists in tail body and fur
Fur (the same of medium part of the ear make 3)
Ch 9
Step 1: Starting from second chain from hook, sc 8.

Step 2: Turn and crochet (each stitch separated by semicolon): dc 1; dc 2; dc 2; dc 1;

hdc 1; sc 1; sc 1; sl st; ch 2 and sl st (same stitch)
Step 3: Turn and crochet (each stitch separated by semicolon): sl st; sc 1; sc 1; hdc 1; dc
1; dc 2; dc 2; dc 1.
Step 4: Sl st and fasten off. Leave long thread to attach later.
Tail body
What I did was: sc 3 in Magic Ring, then kept doing sc until it reached a suitable size (I
compared it in the body with a picture of Carbuncle). So:
Round 1: sc 3 in Magic Ring (3 sts).
Rounds 2 to ??: sc around until the tail reaches a suitable size.
Sl st and fasten off. Leave long thread to attach later.
-Sew the fur parts together like the picture below.
-Sew the fur to the tip of the tail (the closed part, where you began with the magic ring).
-Take the piece of wire and make a small and tight curve to the tip and insert it in the
tail until the end. This curve is necessary so that the wire does not pierce through the
tail. Cut the wire, but make sure to leave a large part of it off the pink tail.
Arms (or hands? Anyhow, make 2) working on continuous rounds
Round 1: Sc 6 in Magic Ring. (6 sts)
Round 2: Hdc 2 in each sc around. (12 sts)
Round 3: Sc 1 in next 4 sts, dec 2, sc 1 in next 4 sts. (10 sts)
Sl st and fasten off. Leave long thread to attach later.
Feet (make 2) working on joint rounds
Sorry, but I dont remember how many chains I started with. I *THINK* it was 12, but
if they turn out too small, you should make more chains. Similarly, if they turn out too
big, you should make less chains. You should also modify the number of sc and dec you
make (see below the rounds). For examble, starting with ch 12, you start by making 10
sc. If you start with ch 14, do 12 sc; with ch 10, 8 sc, and so on. Each 2 ch you make
less, you should make 1 less dc.
Ch 12

Starting on the second chain from hook, sc 10 and make sc 5 in the last chain. Turn and
sc 10. Sl st and ch 1. (24 sts)
Round 2: Hdc 1 in next 10 sts, hdc 2 in next 2 sts, hdc 1 in next 2 sts, hdc 2 in next 2
sts, hdc 1 in next 10 sts. Sl st and ch 1. (28 sts)
Round 3: Sc 1 in next 10 sts, dec 4, sc 1 in next 10 sts. (26 sts)
Round 4: Sc 1 in next 10 sts, dec 3, sc 1 in next 10 sts. (20 sts)
Sl st and fasten off. Leave long thread to attach later.
Stuff a little.
To make the fingers: Carbuncle has 3 fingers in each of his feet. Look at the foot that
you just made and try to see where you want the fingers to be, then insert a piece of
thread between the fingers (the thread should cross both the instep and the sole of the
foot). Tie this thread really tight for the finger to form. Then do the same on the other
side for form the other fingers. When the finger is formed, insert the base of the hook
inside to push the fingers so they become more apparent. Put more stuffing and push
the fingers again. Now you can finish stuffing and close the foot by sewing the hole (I
know, this part is really annoying xD).
Assembly
I did the assembly in this order, but you can do however feels the best.
-Sew the ears to the body first, so its easier to know wheres the front and where to put
the other parts.
-Cut the felt in the format of the mouth, the eyes and the stone glue them in the
appropriate place.
-Embroider the mouth (I learned using this tutorial by Nerdigurumi).
-Sew the arms and legs.
-To attach the tail, if you made with the wire, you should:
-Look for the place behind Carbuncle to see where you want the tail to start.
-The lenght of the wire that was left out of the tail should be the same size as the
distance between this starting point and a little above the middle of Carbuncles back.
-Insert the wire UP inside Carbuncle (not through), like youre trying to pierce
his head.
-Sew the tail and adjust it.
-Paint the details on eyes and stone like the picture bellow.
