Dear Parishioners,
Today is Good Shepherd and Vocation Sunday. We are
reminded that Jesus is our Shepherd, we are his people. in turn
we pray for those who are called to serve the Lord as priest, sister
of brother.
In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we see
Paul and Barnabas preaching the Gospel to the Jews but they reject it; then they preach to the
Gentiles who welcome the Good News with joy.
In the second reading from Revelation, we hear of those who have been through the
great persecution; those who really suffer because of their faith. So many still suffer today
because they are Christian.
The Gospel is so positive reminding us that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who says: I give
them eternal life . no one can ever steal them from me they will never be lost.
We keep in mind the other images of the Good Shepherd that St John mentions: Jesus
said: I am the Good Shepherd; I lay down my life for my sheep I am the gate of the
sheepfold I know my own sheep
Jesus is the one who cares for us; he knows us; we are part of his family. Having said
that Jesus asks us to care for one another; he relies on us to do his work today. This sense of
BELONGING is so vital in understanding Jesus ministry today. The sense of COMMUNITY is at
the very heart of what Jesus, the Good Shepherd is calling us to be.
It is in this context that we pray that those whom Jesus is calling to serve, would be able
to hear his voice, listen to it and respond in a life of dedication.
As a church, we need to develop our understanding and expand a little on what we
mean by A VOCATION. We have placed several obstacles in the way, so that many cannot
answer the call!
STRASBOURG VISIT: As a follow-on to our visit as a delegation to Istanbul some time
ago, we now have an invitation to meet officials in the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. Our
task continues with a view to re-open peace talks between Turkey and the Kurdish people;
also a visit to the imprisoned Kurdish leader, Abdullah Ocalan is vital; his release from prison
after 17 years is essential to the peace process in the whole of the Middle East. Keeping in
mind that Brussels has the European Parliament for the 28 member states; Strasbourg has
the Council of Europe with 47 member states. This council has 19 extra to the 28. They
include countries like Switzerland, Russia and Turkey etc. This is why in the Turkish/Kurdish
conflict, Strasbourg is a key place.
Please pray for the success of our deliberations 18th 21st April.
Thats all for this week. God Bless.
Fr Joe
